Urmas
OK, Clutter... if you can't find "Glipper" in the Dapper repos... dunno... I found a couple of links for "Ubuntu .deb" packages, but they were AWOL.You could try and install the "straight" Debian package (with GDebi):(Package info: http://packages.debian.org/unstable/utils/glipper )http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/downloa...6&type=main(Here's a little older package: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/glipper/g...mp;big_mirror=0 )Or... install gClip: sudo apt-get install libgtk2-perl libgtk2-trayicon-perlwget -O ~/gclip.txt http://gclip.atspace.org/sec/gclip.txtsudo cp -i ~/gclip.txt /usr/bin/gclipsudo chmod 755 /usr/bin/gclipgclip & HEY! Hold the wedding! Looky here! Interesting, non? : Desktop Data Manager is a Clipboard Manager for GNOME similar to Klipper for KDE. With DDM it is possible to display different types of content like text or images.Additional DDM includes a screenshot taking application which is able to take screenshots from a single window/subwindow, rectangle of the screen or the whole desktop. In 0.8.10 DDM is extended with a Download Manager which supports continuation, threaded/segmented downloading, Support for HTTP/HTTPS/FTP , MD5/SHA1 checksum calculation and downloading from multiple mirrors). http://data-manager.sourceforge.net/index.html.deb package... food for GDebi:http://downloads.sourceforge.net/data-mana...0.8.10_i386.deb Edited June 11, 2007 by Urmas
Cluttermagnet
Thanks, Urmas-Yep, that one is quite interesting! I'd certainly be willing to try it. So, what I need to know is the drill for downloading and then installing from a non repos source like SourceForge. I have not yet done that for the first time. What's the drill here? Cluttermagnet
OK, I have downloaded it to my, er, Desktop. This would sound even more lame if I were doing it in Windoze, where I use a folder called Download, so it will look like I know what I'm doing... Desktop Data Manager is a reasonably compact program, only ~133K.What next? In Windoze, assuming I'm satisfied that the software is 'clean' and trustworthy, I'd shut down running applications and then double click to start the install... Urmas
Downloading and installing a .deb package in Ubuntu is pretty much the same as dowloading/installing an .exe in that other OS. "Case DDM": Download the package... http://downloads.sourceforge.net/data-manager/desktop-data-manager_0.8.10_i386.deb ... Once d-loaded, double click on the package icon, and GDebi will do the job for you... provided that GDebi can find all the (possibly required) dependencies in the repos. Cluttermagnet
Do you trust this software, Urmas? "You need to grant administrative rights to install software"Aw, never mind- I let it start. This looks to be a very big download for dialup, with all the dependencies. At present rate, maybe a half hour to an hour or more. But I don't know exact file sizes of the 22 files, because it never told me. Assumes broadband connection, I suppose...The only reason I can even send this to you right now is because I'm on two separate computers using two different phone lines right now. I'm estimating a 1 hour download at this point. Edited June 11, 2007 by Cluttermagnet
Urmas
Do you trust this software, Urmas? "You need to grant administrative rights to install software"1. You ALWAYS need them rights whilst installing in Linux.2. Trust? Well... it's open source, coming from a Sourceforge page, credited in the Ubuntu Forums, so... define "trust". Enough to install and use it? Yup. I'd be more worried about stability... seems to be a new project. But... if it's a lemon, and it's installed with GDebi, you can remove it using Synaptic. I'm estimating a 1 hour download at this point. Dialup --cruel and unusual... but not unusual enough!
Cluttermagnet
Cool. That's reassuring. Well, it sounds like a really neat program. A lot of good features built in. Trying to be a bit like a Swiss army knife, perhaps? ;)Yes, regarding trust, SourceForge has a good reputation with me, so I guess it would be a waste to worry about things from them. Urmas
A lot of good features built in. Trying to be a bit like a Swiss army knife, perhaps? Cluttermagnet
Oh boy-I was away from the computer when the download of all the dependencies completed. I have no idea if it installed OK. If so, I have no idea of where it is on this computer. I'm not sure what I'd want to do next? :wacko:It took about 80 minutes of downloading, BTW.Does Ubuntu keep some sort of log of the download/install progress that I can access later (now)? Urmas
Well, I just installed it (wonder if I should worry about "OS bloat" - all the dependencies were already installed ); I found it under Applications -> Accessories... three entries: "DDM Download", "DDM Screenshot", and "Desktop Data Manager".If the shortcuts aren't there, the Terminal commands are: ddm-download ddm-screenshot desktop-data-manager I have no idea of where it is on this computerUsing File Manager of your choice, navigate yourself to /usr/bin... the following items should be in there:- ddm-download- ddm-downloadd- ddm-screenshot- desktop-data-manager Edited June 11, 2007 by Urmas

Cluttermagnet
Clutter's verdict is:I wasted 80 minutes of precious dialup 'bandwidth', and this bad boy ain't anywhere on my hard drive, so far as I can determine. Hey, what about those download/install logs? Any way I can determine at what point things went wrong? Is it possible to obtain a list of dependencies for DDM and go looking for those? All that download time wasn't imaginary, guys- somewhere on my hard drive sits at least 21 out of 22 downloaded files. I watched nearly the entire, tedious, sorry process unwind, but then left the room and missed the grand finale. So I missed where the stupid install utility flashed an error message on my screen for like 50-100 milliseconds telling me why the entire 80 minute download session was a waste... I was out of the room when it happened to 'complete'. Edited June 11, 2007 by Cluttermagnet
Cluttermagnet
(All I really need is a little clipboard manager)Hey, while we're at it-Any recommendations for a 'NoCaps' utility for Linux?I hate it when I accidentally hit the caPS KEY AND TYPE ALONG FOR A LONG TIME LIKE THIS BEFORE i NOTICE WHAT i'M DOING...Last thought- is it time for me to abandon Dapper and install Edgy or Feisty? Now, I'm going to have to tell you that I really, really, really like the overall look and feel of Dapper. With Kubuntu, Feisty, and Edgy, there was always something I didn't like on the live CD view, always a lot of new learning needed, or re-learning, that definite feeling of having been 'set back', that feeling of 'negative progress', that feeling of 'uselessness' and wondering "now what do I do?"It's hard to live with how glacial my progress has been, but I do have the patience and the committment to stick it out and learn. OTOH, my productivity level is markedly lower in Ubuntu compared to Win98SE. I have 10 years experience in Windows. I know file management in Windows. I know where to find things. I have a good intuitive feeling for what is/is not safe or wise to do in Windows. In Linux, I often have that '5 year old' feeling- you know, the lost kid with the note pinned to their shirt:"Clutter JonesMrs. Smith's kintergarten classIf lost, return to Jones family, (999) 555-121212345 Chaos Ct.Mixville, WY..." Cluttermagnet
If that does not help . . .read here: No Capslock BrunoHi, Bruno-I tried the bash script method. BTW just entering the command in Terminal did indeed disable the Caps Lock key. Everything seemed to go fine with the bash script:sudo mkdir /usr/share/gnome/autostartsudo gedit /usr/share/gnome/autostart/nocapslock(in gEdit:)#!/bin/bashxmodmap -e "remove Lock = Caps_Lock"#End script I looked and the script "nocapslock" is there. But then when I did sudo chmod 755 nocapslock I get chmod: cannot access 'nocapslock': No such file or directoryHave I missed anything obvious? Try Glipper (there shouldn't be massive dependencies), or gClip [download links in above post(s)].Hi, Urmas-I installed gClip as the last and only choice. But now I need to figure out how to use it. I'm reading at their website, but not understanding yet how I would see a list of previous Saves, or how to select one from a list to be inserted in the Clipboard, etc. :hmm:It appears that gClip did not install any icons and such. I can't tell how to access preferences, make stuff visible, etc. I did give the command "gclip" in Terminal and the OS told me it was already running- so I know it's there (somewhere). :wacko:I also navigated to gClip and opened it (display). It's quite an impressive perl document. I have no idea what goes on in there, but it obviously does represent a lot of work by some one. Urmas
That "install mantra" you did... sudo apt-get install libgtk2-perl libgtk2-trayicon-perlwget -O ~/gclip.txt http://gclip.atspace.org/sec/gclip.txtsudo cp -i ~/gclip.txt /usr/bin/gclipsudo chmod 755 /usr/bin/gclipgclip & The last line opens gClip... and I assume the tray icon appeared. But whenever you open a program "from" Terminal... the program will close the second you close the Terminal. The quickest way to make the Start Menu Entry (under Accessories)... in Terminal: wget -O ~/gclip.desktop http://gclip.atspace.org/sec/gclip.desktopsudo cp -i ~/gclip.desktop /usr/share/applications/gclip.desktop That's all, folks!Preferences... when gClip is running, you'll see the tray icon... right click, choose "Preferences". I did give the command "gclip" in Terminal and the OS told me it was already running ... restart X, or reboot... try again... weird.EDIT: If it keeps crashing... open it with command "gclip &". If that works better for you, we'll adapt the start menu entry accordingly (although, in Preferences, there is an autostart option). Urmas
Clutter, another thing:Have you come across this site?http://www.getdeb.net/distro_select.phpSince you're on dialup, it takes time to update the repository info etc. So... why not download the "Ubuntufied" . deb package of your choice from there and install it with GDebi? Cluttermagnet
Heh heh...Well, that icon may have snuck up into my panel a while back- or it may have just now shown up. Anyway, I now see the icon up there, so the rest should be self- explanatory. Let me play with it a bit and get a feel for it.And who said command lines were hard? OK, well, they are a bit of a pain. I wish you could edit in the Terminal window. Type a mistake, move on, and then later you discover the mistake and have to erase all the way back to the mistake and retype. Anyway...clutter is already a command line typing fool. Heh! At least I'm not afraid of them. My OS has got to crash and burn eventually...
