So, you're saying that Krishna was ROOT, eh? :)
Was, is, will be:
The wise, full of devotion, worship me, believing that I am the origin of all, and that all moves on through me. Concentrating their minds on me, offering their lives to me, instructing each other, and speaking about me, they are always contented and happy. To these, who are constantly disciplined, and who worship with spiritual discipline, I give that knowledge by which they attain to me. And remaining in their hearts, I destroy, with the brilliant lamp of knowledge, the darkness born of ignorance in such men out of compassion for them.

I have become ROOT, the shatterer of systems... to paraphrase Oppenheimer. :)oppie.gifOppenheimer

Oppenheimer, yes... Goethe also goes command line (Faust/part 1):

Wer sie nicht kennte, die Elemente, ihre Kraftund Eigenschaft,wäre kein Meisterüber die Geister.
The English translations are a bit "dumbed down"... instead of "elements", they talk about four elements: ash, bash, ksh and zsh... forgetting all the others:
Who doth ignoreThe primal Four,Nor knows arightTheir use and might,O'er spirits will heNe'er master be!

"If philosophers ruled the world..."We'd all be wearing togas and engaging in non-stop food fights-Which might not be all that bad compared to what really goes on in the world today, passing for 'intelligent' human activity...Ahem-Next weighty Linux question that has suggested itself to Clutter-why do machines sometimes 'freeze' when inactive for a long time? I've seen 98SE do this, but I notice that my copies of Ubuntu 6.06, both live CD and installed, have a strong tendency to totally freeze up at times, after long idle periods. I've seen this repeatedly during the past couple of weeks on my 'Linux test bed' machine (1.6GHz P4). Mouse and kbd inputs just get ignored, and whatever animated screensaver graphics were running at the time just freeze frame and sit there endlessly. It takes a hard reboot (Reset button) to get it running again. BTW there is a 2-port KVM 'in the middle'. Could it be a KVM problem?

;) B) :hmm: KVM, screensaver (you could disable screensaver... at least not let it go "random"... some of the screensavers are 3-D... might not play nice with your system), something else maybe... sounds weird. I've got a PIII "momputer" that's been "up" pretty much 24/7 since Christmas 2005... gets an occasional reboot whenever there is a kernel/distro update. Ubuntu 5.10 -> 6.06 -> 6.10. NOT A SINGLE OS FREEZE/HARD KILL. Occasional Opera/FF/Gimp/Abiword hangup, but they close gracefully... slowly but gracefully. Shorther experience with another machine (Athlon 3000+), but, so far, nope... no freezing, no hard kills with it either. Zero. Edited by Urmas

Yes, before casting blame on the KVM (which it could be also), I try not to allow any random screensavers to run. I don't actually use them at all....but that's me.At least for a time, to help with troubleshooting, either choose one you know actually works, or don't use a screensaver. If that doesn't help, might want to see if the computer works fine all by itself for a day on the Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor.Wouldn't it be funny if it was neither problem and turned out to be maybe a ACPI issue...You are doing so well Clutter!(I knew you would! ;) )

Thanks, Urmas-I disabled the screensaver, per the Help menu. Let's see if that does it, before I try anything more. BTW came home late tonight and the computer had sat, turned on, for around 8 hours. Sure enough, it was frozen and needed a hard Reset and reboot to get it going.

Thanks, LilBambi-Yes, as much as I love these very creative and interesting screensavers in Ubuntu 6.06, I'm disabling them for a time. But if it proves to be caused by something else, I will turn them back on. Actually, I quite enjoy them. I'm having fun with my first Linux distro. In time, I'll try a few others. I think I want to give PClos a shot next. It seems well- configured for beginners, and it seemed to play well on my machines in a live CD session. In time, I'll try them all. ;)

Yes! PCLos is a good one. But you might want to wait a bit: there is a new version ("2007" or 0.94) coming soon. Also: when it comes to Ubuntu, Feisty Fawn (7.04) is due this month. 6.06 (Dapper Drake) is good... I've found 6.10 (Edgy Eft) to be smoother and "overall better"... and... well... here's me drooling... I love venison! B)
In time, I'll try them all.
Attaboy!

Hi, All-Well, I knew, going into it, that Scot's Linux forum was going to be the place to get the best help as a beginner. And you guys haven't disappointed, either. I agree with Bruno, overly long threads present more of a problem with searches. I often read back through this thread because I have minor issues yet unresolved, things like the zip drive mounting and such. But here's my overall take on long threads- they are a celebration, and here we're celebrating Clutter's long overdue emergence as an enthusiastic Linux user. I'm having a fantastic time with it! My new skills will soon benefit others, and that's a good thing, too.Late last night, just for grins, I cobbled together an 'odd' P4 1.6GHz system, not even in a case. It's all laying exposed on top of a small card table. BTW the P4 CPU was bought on Ebay, used, for under 11 USD, including shipping! Heh! This is all just spare, 'excess' hardware. I wanted to look at some older, smaller hard drives to see which might still have some life in them. Many are screwed up in some way, but I did find one old 3.2G drive that was running. It had some sort of small, extra partition on it, the sort of thing an IT department might put on a 'company machine', and the drive setup was frustrating my ability to look at and work on the drive using fdisk. To make a long story short, I was able to get the drive 'unstuck' and reuseable by running Gparted and formatting over a no-longer wanted, wounded copy of 98SE I got from working on a friend's computer. Windows was having sooo much trouble with this drive. Well, I put a copy of Ubuntu 6.06 on it, and everything loaded uneventfully. Ubuntu just wants to work. Now, 3 gigs isn't much space to 'grow into', but then the only reason I put Linux on this drive was as a test. I let it overwrite and just set up however it wanted. Now there is a 2.85G main partiton, and about 60 percent of it (1.76G) used. Not bad. Running Linux will allow me to get more years out of older but perfectly good hardware- and it makes it sooo inexpensive to build a desktop PC with pretty good performance! As I say, it's been a fun introduction to Linux and I'm learning something new every day- plus I really enjoy using Gparted off of the Ubuntu live CD, and I'll be acquiring other tools from Linux as my skills increase. Life is good... :P  Edited by Cluttermagnet

Well, actually, there is a Water Cooler thread that's still ongoing which would take a major effort to beat in number of posts Three Words That Make Sense. (119 pages and 2,961 posts to date). So carry on! And no worries, I don't think you will break anything! :whistling:
