Huuuuurraaaay !!!!Okay Colin . . .now I want you to pay attention to the commands we give now . . I will explain them before giving them, so you know WHY we give them and how . . . First we make a general "backup" directory on hda4:

# mkdir /mnt/hda4/backup

Then we make in that backup directory a few more directories you will use to store the things you want to keep safe:

# mkdir /mnt/hda4/backup/documents# mkdir /mnt/hda4/backup/pictures# mkdir /mnt/hda4/backup/music# mkdir /mnt/hda4/backup/poetry# mkdir /mnt/hda4/backup/important

Did you see what we did ???:"> Bruno

Now here are the commands to write down, print out and pin on the wall:( So do NOT do them now !! )

# mount /dev/hda4 /mnt/hda4# cp  xxxxxx  /mnt/hda4/backup/documents# cp  yyyyyy  /mnt/hda4/backup/pictures# cp  mmmmm  /mnt/hda4/backup/music# cp  ppppp  /mnt/hda4/backup/poetry# cp  iiiii  /mnt/hda4/backup/important# cp -r  wallpapers  /mnt/hda4/backup# umount /mnt/hda4

Where you replace xxxxx with the name of the doc you want to storeWhere you replace yyyyy with the name of the picture you want to storeWhere you replace mmm with the name of the music-track you want to storeWhere you replace pppp with the name of the poetry-file you want to storeWhere you replace iiiiiiiiiii with the name of the important stuff you want to storeWher you replace wallpapers with the name of the directory you want to storeGot it ??? ;):"> Bruno

HI Colin . . . I made a typo in the first command and corrected it quickly . . . but do check first if you have the corrected version :D :D . . . . . you are always so quick :DYes you can copy a complete directory called "wallpapers":

# cp -r  wallpapers  /mnt/hda4/backup

It will then show up as a new directory called wallpapers in the backup directory !NOTE: I used the -r "argument" in this commad . . . you use that when you copy a full directory with contentsB) Bruno

Correct !!! BUT copy and paste in the GUI will not work . . because you have different UID in different distros !And you can use the same commands from whatever distro you are in at that moment !!I edited the commands to include the directory command:Here it is again . . the final version to print out ! ( In Mepis :D )======================================================

# mount /dev/hda4 /mnt/hda4# cp  xxxxxx  /mnt/hda4/backup/documents# cp  yyyyyy  /mnt/hda4/backup/pictures# cp  mmmmm  /mnt/hda4/backup/music# cp  ppppp  /mnt/hda4/backup/poetry# cp  iiiii  /mnt/hda4/backup/important# cp -r  wallpapers  /mnt/hda4/backup# umount /mnt/hda4

Where you replace xxxxx with the name of the doc you want to storeWhere you replace yyyyy with the name of the picture you want to storeWhere you replace mmm with the name of the music-track you want to storeWhere you replace pppp with the name of the poetry-file you want to storeWhere you replace iiiiiiiiiii with the name of the important stuff you want to storeWher you replace wallpapers with the name of the directory you want to store=======================================:D Bruno

BUT can I just use Konqueror ALSO and move the directories etc with the Mouse with Copy or Move Here
Because you have different distros you want to access that backup . . .and in those different distros you have different User ID's ( UID ) . . you will get permission problems . . . so that will not work okay.So better this way . . .and when you copy back to a distro you change ownership to reflect the UID you have in that distro !!:D Bruno
