striker, you are observant!kanotix is up to 14% downloaded. It is steady at about 70KB/sec and since the time is a bit over two hours, I'm letting this one work.I will check the link and if this one gets slower, I'll try the other.

Now Now Julia :hmm: :P If you read a little further back in these posts Bruno SUGGESTED another PCLOs install :hysterical: so there :sleeping: Colin :hysterical:
Bruno said another install after checking out the hardware!
In that case I am 100% positive it is a hardware problem . . . . and no matter how we keep fixing the install, this problem will keep damaging the install over and over again. It's a lost case.My advise: Shut down the laptop . . wait for your friend to fix it . . . and when it is fixed re-install a fresh PCLos on it. :P Bruno
Just a reminder Colin. Notice it says when it is fixed reinstallDon't get the order confused. :thumbsup:

The worst that could happen if you don't listen to Bruno is he coud cut you off from advice from him here. :( :thumbsup: :w00t:Then again, that would take a way a lot of entertainment! :) What would I do without all the email notifications of posts here?

Hi ColinStriker did send me some info with a hack we maybe can apply for the overheating problem. But I need to study it first before we start . . . and I am not sure I have enough time today to do it . . . . so maybe tomorrow :DAnyway, maybe you can show me: "cat /proc/acpi/fan/FAN1/state" to start with ?:thumbsup: Bruno

ColinI don't think your battery ever gets down to 10%! :thumbsup: Maybe your laptop does but I doubt you do. Students have gone their way and safely home. I saw five students today of which only three were my students. :( They all got individual attention today. Since alternative schools are for students with one type of problem or another my largest class is 7 students but it could be three different classes during the same class period. I do more "tutoring" than "teaching". :)

OOPS Bruno--->>>[kamicota@localhost ~]$ cat /proc/acpi/fan/FAN1/statestatus: off[kamicota@localhost ~]$And Julia I DO SEEM to have been on a HIGH CHARGE for a while eh :thumbsup: :devil: :P Yes Special needs children oft do bring a lot of satisfaction and you may have to explain the difference between "tutoring" and teaching" I think my HIGH is affecting my Low UNDERSTANDING :P :whistling: Cheers for YearsColin :D

It's simple Colin. Teaching is doing the same thing with a group of students. Tutoring is working one-on-one with each student probably doing something different. Glad you are on a high charge. :thumbsup:

Posted (edited)

Thank you JuliaNow I am as WISE :devil: as youYeah I might be Charged up but the FAN is OFF - WONDER WHY :thumbsup: :D Cheers for Years Colin :whistling:

Hang on Colin, there might be a solution for the 'fan is off' .You'll have to wait until Bruno's around again.He's studying on the info from the link I send him, so give him some time.

I don't think you need to take it apart, the solution to what I'm thinkin' of is a software solution regarding acpi.Just wait for Bruno and don't do anything with it until Bruno tells you to.Just leave it switched off until Bruno arrives, that might be in 1-1,5 hrs.

Heck StrikerI got it working on the battery :D GOT TO GET RID OF THOSE PAINFUL BATTERY MEMORIES :P aND i SURE hope :devil: IT IS A kOnsole COMMAND fix WITH ACPI :thumbsup: Cheers for YearsColin :whistling:

Hi ColinSorry I could not get back at you earlier . . . . just had a very busy program yesterday :)Okay let us not waste more time and try to tweak this laptop ! This was your last info:

[kamicota@localhost ~]$ cat /proc/acpi/fan/FAN1/statestatus: off
Now I would like you to give the following command:
$ su<password># echo "force_on:1" > /proc/acpi/fan/FAN1/state

The command itself will show nothing, but when after the command you again do:

$ cat /proc/acpi/fan/FAN1/state

The answer should be different from the one you posted before.B) Bruno

Bruno I HOPE this is a :thumbsup: B) [kamicota@localhost ~]$ suPassword:[root@localhost kamicota]# echo "force_on:1" > /proc/acpi/fan/FAN1/state[root@localhost kamicota]# cat /proc/acpi/fan/FAN1/statestatus: on[root@localhost kamicota]#Colin B)

Well it is a start Colin . . . . . we're not there yet . . . next step:

# cat /etc/rc.d/rc.local

B) Bruno

OOPS Silly MOI[root@localhost kamicota]# cat /etc/rc.d/rc.local#!/bin/sh## This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts.# You can put your own initialization stuff in here if you don't# want to do the full Sys V style init stuff.touch /var/lock/subsys/localif [ -f /etc/LIVECD ] ; thenecho "Trying to start graphical desktop. If for some reason this failsplease log in here with name root password root, type video to set yourvideo card and then type startx to get to the desktop" > /etc/issuefimodprobe snd-atiixpsleep 1amixer set Master 90% unmuteamixer set PCM 90% unmute [root@localhost kamicota]#Colin B)

Okay . . got it . . . now reboot and report back when you are back up . . . . I will type the next commands in the mean time ;)B) Bruno

Posted

Okay . . .let us check first:

# cat /proc/acpi/fan/FAN1/state

Don't worry it is supposed to show "off" again B) . . . just want to make sure . . B) Bruno

Posted

If YOU SAY so B) [kamicota@localhost ~]$ suPassword:[root@localhost kamicota]# cat /proc/acpi/fan/FAN1/statestatus: off[root@localhost kamicota]#Colin B)

Okay . . now we get ton the critical part . . . . . . so pay attention ;)We first open the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file in Kwrite:

 $ kdesu kwrite /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Now in the next quote you will see 3 colors:BLUE = What was there originally ( Don't touch ! ) GREEN = What we added last time for the sound issue ( Don't touch ! ) RED = What I want you to add this time

#!/bin/sh## This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts.# You can put your own initialization stuff in here if you don't# want to do the full Sys V style init stuff.touch /var/lock/subsys/localif [ -f /etc/LIVECD ] ; thenecho "Trying to start graphical desktop. If for some reason this failsplease log in here with name root password root, type video to set yourvideo card and then type startx to get to the desktop" > /etc/issuefi# These lines are for the sound-fixmodprobe snd-atiixpsleep 1amixer set Master 90% unmuteamixer set PCM 90% unmute# Next line is for the overheating problemecho "force_on:1" > /proc/acpi/fan/FAN1/state
So in total you add 3 lines . . . the RED ones ;)After the edit you save the file and show me:
# cat /etc/rc.d/rc.local

# These lines are for the sound-fix
Colin !! . . You did put that line in the wrong place !!!! Please remove it and place it 5 lines lower . . . just above the "modprobe snd-atiixp" !!B) Bruno
