Gary
I attemped to install it. Luckily it did not ruin my Windows Partition. It ddid install or at least part of it did. I had 4 CD's but it only asked for the first two.. When I was done there was no GUI just a CLI: I put PCLinux back on. I was able to make the boot floppy. longgone
Gary.......I also have 4 CD's, I think 3 & 4 are source codes .. I did not need them ... in order to get a GUI you will need to change the run level from 3 (default) to 4 ... check the Slackware tips in the tips for linux explorers at the top of this thread ... the only thing I ran into was that I had to use "mcedit" to make the changes ...hth.. Bruno
Hi GaryTake my advice: the first 3 months in Linux you don't want to try Slackware, Slack is for the more advanced ;)And, there is no distro amongst the 300 listed at http://distrowatch.com/index.php that is set up so complete ( with programs you daily use and already configured browserplugins ) as PCLos !So keep PCLos as default, and make an extra partition ( or add an extra HD ) to experiment with other Linux versions . . . because then you can always fall back on a rock-stable and userfriendly default distro. Bruno
Nope . . bitttorrent is browser independent :)But for other downloads then with bittorrent better use konqueror because there is a bug in Firefox's 1.5 download function.BTW: how come you had FF 1.5 with the updates ??? . . . what version Slack are you running ? Bruno
Aha . . . . that is how you got the buggy Firefox . . . . . .For adding a bittorrent button to the taskbar: rightclick on the taskbar and choose "Add to panel" --> "Special Button" --> "Non-KDE Application" . . . in the dialog you get fill in for the command "/usr/bin/bittorrent" and look for a nice icon that fits the purpose. burninbush
Time to resurface ..... finally tried a DVD in Slack 10.2 ... and ... after all that work ... it won't play at least not using gxine ....it tells me xine failed to start ...no input plugin found and read error from /dev/dvd ...Hmmm.. that dvd read error sounds worrisome -- Re movie playing, I gave Slamd64 a recent run, found that there are Slack alternative "non-US" install cds -- if you dl those, you'll get the working gxine and libdvdcss parts. At least, I assume Slack has the same, to be clear my recent experience here with Slack is with the Slamd-64 distribution. For that, I went back to get the non-US version of the #2 cd. It's probably possible to just get the items you need, which are quite small -- save downloading the whole cd. And just as a reality check [on that dvd drive] you might consider getting a copy of a recent Slax or Puppy -- either will play commercial dvds as-is, and either can be loaded to ram on boot, to free-up your optical drive for movie playing. Bruno
Looks to me like you have not got the right plugins and codecs to play DVDs . . . . Here is a quote how to install the win plugins ( works for Xine too ): Downloading and installing the MPlayer codecsThe MPlayer downloads page has quit a few different downloads available. The one you are looking for is called "essential codecs package." Get the download link and drop to your shell one more time.First, we'll download the codec.root@laptop:/home/lineman# wget http://ftp5.mplayerhq.hu/mplayer/releases/...0050412.tar.bz2Next we need to create the directory /usr/lib/win32.root@laptop:/home/lineman# mkdir /usr/lib/win32Finally, we need to decompress the codecs and place them in /usr/lib/win32.root@laptop:/home/lineman# tar xjvf essential-20050412.tar.bz2root@laptop:/home/lineman# cp essential-20050412/* /usr/lib/win32Next you will need the libdvdcss: http://www.linuxpackages.net/search_view.p...dvdcss&ver=10.2 to be able to play DVDs at all.
