New question,, same distro ..... Slackware tip #2 ... adding reboot/pwr off buttons ... followed the destructions .. except used "mcedit" instead of "vi" .... (vi wouldn't work for me when I tried it to get X working) ... made the entry just like the given example (substituted "dale" for "bruno") ... but it does not work ..(rebooted and checked the "sudo" file and the entry is still there so it is good .... ??? :( :( :"> :( :) ........ DISREGARD this post .. a case of foot in mouth .. prior to engaging brain here ......

B) :hmm: :hmm: .......Here I am again .. sort of a revival here .. since I was not having great success with updates here I went ahead and did a fresh installation .... :) :) (sort of) ... all went well except for one glich... after the first installation was done ...... click on K (menu icon) >logout >shutoff computer (does its shut down procedure) and it would power off ... now after the reinstall .. it does not power off ... it stops ar thr "power off" indication and then I manually shut it down .... any ideas what changed .... also after the reinstall, some changes were noted .. I did not need to "uncomment" the "NIC ppp0" line, connects right up now, changed the version line in swaret to "current" and ended up with 125-175mb of updates to install and lastly ... the last install was showing me all the updates were for Slack 10.0 ... this time it was 10.1 ,, better by far ..... I would say that it is fairly up to date .....

Hi DaleAbout the "power-off" . . . the solution is here: http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/index.ph...14&t=503&st=144Then the swaret and "current" . . . . you know, "current"is the development version and will also install "unstable" packages . . . you better change the /etc/swaret.conf to reflect the version you are running . . . read here: http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/index.ph...14&t=503&st=241:) Bruno

Hi DalePlease do as follow:

$ su# mkdir /mnt/windows

Then edit the /etc/fstab file to read like this:

/dev/hda8 / reiserfs defaults 1 1/dev/hda3 /mnt/windows ntfs ro 1 0/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,owner,ro 0 0/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
Next reboot . . . and after the reboot, just to be sure all is okay show:
# ls -al /ntfs

This command should come up empty . . . only if it is empty you can do:

# rm -rf /ntfs

Finally please do:

# mount /mnt/windows# ls -al /mnt/windows

Open /home in konqueror . . . and type in the addressbar: "/mnt/windows" ;):D Bruno

:D :D :) ...Ohhhhh...... I see .... can't do it from fox 1.5 ..... that is interesting to know ... one last question for the moment (until I get a video disk) ... in the notes I got from you many months ago to install software pkgs ,, it says swaret --install (the pkg name) ... is this still viable in 10.2 .. in particular Bittorrent ????
Posted

I tried that .. in konqueror .. and it tells me I have no rights to access it ?????

Posted

Well you could do "kdesu konqueror" . . . . . BUT that is very very unsafe !!! . . .Better is to use the commandline to access it:

# cd /mnt/windows/Documents\ and\ Settings# ls -al

Yep . . . but "su" is enough permissions to keep you safe ;):D Bruno

Hmmmmmmmmm..... sure hope I don't ever get the urge to do this ...... think I'll go get a video and tackle that quest ................

Posted

Com'on . . . . it's really simple . .

# la -al /mnt/windows/Documents\ and\ Settings/Dale

will show you everything in your "My Documents" . . . Now imagine you have a file in there named "film.avi" . . here is how you copy it to /home in Linux:

# cp /mnt/windows/Documents\ and\ Settings/Dale/film.avi /home/dale

B) :o ......... Ahhhh Haaaa................... The picture has become crystal clear now..... I was under the impression that I could just set this all up ... create an icon for it ,,, click on said icon and be in Windows (while still remaining in Linux) ,,, do what I wanted ,, close it out ,, and be back in Linux ,, now I see this is not the case at all ...
