teacher
Okay, ppc, i586,? What do those mean? Is there anything else I should get at the same time?
Bruno
Hi Julia,Good morning, you´re an early bird !PPC is for apple computers ! i568 is for Pentium/AMD PC´sYou´ll have to get the: Mandrake 9.1 Final. . . . .i586 . . . .$5.97 Bruno
teacher
I suspected as much. The i586 looked like Pentium but I just could not figure out the PPC. I do have a disk with a copy of the iso as one file. I know I opened one that way before, but it was within windows.Yes, I am an early bird. I have been at school for half an hour already. Until I get over some medicine, it is very little sleep for this kid.
Bruno
Until I get over some medicine, it is very little sleep for this kid. You poor girl ! Well I did not get much either !I do have a disk with a copy of the iso as one file. NO good ! No, really this will all become clear once you have Linux installed and burn your images with ¨cdrecord¨ !The i586 looked like Pentium but I just could not figure out the PPC. Always happy to explain, Julia !Did you put the order in ? Bruno
teacher
I will order after I see the kids to their classes. Anything else I should get while I am paying shipping?
Bruno
I will order after I see the kids to their classes. Anything else I should get while I am paying shipping?Nope Julia, that will do ! Have fun with the kids ! Bruno

teacher
I´ll be waiting right here Julia ! Take your time we can do it next weekend if that suits you BrunoYou are the one wearing the suit! Actually, another question. . . Is it better to have Mandrake on its own drive? Is it worth the inestment to drop another one in just for that? If so, how large of a drive would be worthwhile to do so? Any particular drives that don't work well with Mandrake?B)I don't want to use up everything I have left on this hard drive. Since when did 8 gb start looking small to me? Sometime right after 20 MB seemed large?
Bruno
JuliaAny 20 GB drive will do ! Brilliant idea !! Bruno
teacher
I left my computer burning the CD this morning. Seemed to be going fine. New hardware will not be here until Monday.Should I hold my horses and install new hardware first, or will it be easier to install hardware after.Since one of my students broke one of my windows yesterday, is that a sign I need to move away from "Windows"? Bruno
Hi julia, Should I hold my horses and install new hardware first Yes, that would be a good idea ! Definitely !is that a sign I need to move away from "Windows"? Never burn your ships behind you, Juia ! Who knows you might need them one day !New hardware will not be here until Monday. So sad Julia, so sad, what a bummer a whole free weekend and then this ! Bruno
teacher
Guess what! I now have three Mandrakes disks, labeled 1, 2, and 3. By using ISO recorder I was successful in burning disks. I think my next step is to take apart my computer, clean out my CD-RW drive, put it back together. Then I should remove the ISO files I downloaded to make the CDs?Clean up anything left.Rerun defrag???? Bruno
If you are sure the CD´s look right; Yes ! That plan looks good to me ! Bruno
teacher
Somewhere in the last week I have lost 3 GB of hard disk space. Think I had better wait for the new hard drive. Guess this will wait until next week since I am down to only 5 GB now. Don't know quite how I lost so much space. I removed the download copies I burned to CD. greengeek
If you have system restore then that's what's taking up those extra 3GBs.I "lost" 5GB after a rather large copy and burn session once, took a bit of reading to find out what happened.Joy
Bruno
Julia, I think your CD-burning program left a few .tmp files on your HD, maybe it is that what has eaten your free space, after all the attempts with 2 different CD-burning programs. quint
Think you're right about SystemRestore, but in case you haven't tried it, do a search: "*.iso"
teacher
I would not think System Restore would take 2 GB. I will go do some digging. I am also doing a search for *.iso right now to see what I have left on the computer. Probably a ton.Yesterday I went book shopping. I found tons of books about Red Hat and SuSe but zero on Mandrake. Am I missing something? Is there a particular reason? Are they similar enough that one will help me out as I try to see what I can learn? I picked up Linux for Dummies, not that I am a fan of dummies books but I figured here it would help. I also picked up Linux in the Workplace to se what it had. It seemed fairly simple to read and understand. I found only remnants of another iso file which I deleted. It did not appear to clear up any more disk space. Thanks Joy and Quint for your inputs. Bruno
but zero on Mandrake There are tons of Mandrake specific doc´s on-line Julia ! You could start Here ( also in pdf format ) They are mainly for 9.0 but still very relevant for 9.1. Also I could send you the 9.1 doc´s in pdf , I have special access to them. nlinecomputers
Julia,I don't know why there are not any books on Mandrake. I'm sure if did a search at Amazon you'd find them. Mandrake is based on RedHat so a good book on RedHat will 90% work on a mandrake box. The only things it will not cover are the GUI tools that only mandrake has, the various "drake" tools. Good books that help for running ANY Linux box IMO are "Running Linux" from O'Reilly, "Linux in a Nutshell" (this isn't a training book it is a command reference and good to look thorugh when you can't quite remember the syntax of a command.) Also the RUTE Users' Tutorial and Exposition which you can download or read online here.
teacher
That would be great. I bookmarked the page.I am back up to 7 1/2 GB free space after house cleaning. Should I wait for the new hard drive or dive in?
Bruno
Come on let´s roll ! You can always de a re-install as the new drive comes in. Let´s see it as a test install !Please read the new addition of today in the ¨TIP´s¨ thread ( page 8 at the bottom ), print it out and make strong coffee ! Bruno
Made it easy for you: 1) Don´t forget to do a good backup of important data on your computer even if it is on a partition that won´t be effected by the install !2) Make a plan in advance on how you want your partitions done ( see page 4 of The Tips ) and what filesystem you want to use ( Ext3, ReiserFS etc. )3) Do not uses all your free space of the windows partition, you might want to leave some working-space there for adding new programs or temp files ( CD burning programs need at least 700 MB temp ) we don´t want to cripple your windows OS. :)4) BIOS: Put the entry: PnP aware OS on NO !5) BIOS: First boot device: CD-rom, second Floppy, third IDE-06) Check out the README and INSTALL text files on your CD7) Note down the root-password you make during install. ( once you have used it a couple of times you can burn the evidence )8) Install the bootloader Lilo in the MBR ( it will include your windows options automaticly ).9) ALWAYS make a boot-floppy ! ( and check if it really works ) Bruno
