The Women of OpenStack talk outreach, education, and mentoring (2014)

I think this quote sums up the subject very neatly indeed.

The best way I can think to describe why it matters for women to network with other women is there's an establishment of trust, that this community is also your community. We don't tend to walk into a room full of all-women in open source events. More often you walk into a room, try to figure out just where to sit, try to find someone else you recognize and can talk to, and see if you know any regulars from other areas. With small networks of women in open source, my vision is that we'll walk into the room and just know we belong. Then we won't ask questions like: "How can we get more women in open source?" We'll ask: "How can we get more people in open source?"

What's the best entry point for women in computing? Open source. (2014)

Last year the conference celebrated 13 years of bringing together women technologists and welcomed more than 4,750 attendees from 53 different countries, and 350 companies, from around the world. This year, the Grace Hopper conference will be held October 8 - 11 at The Phoenix Convention Center in Arizona. A call for participation has been issued and will conclude on March 14.

TNMOC announces Women in Computing project

The series of videos and interactive resources is designed to help combat the image of computing and telecommunications as a career path exclusively for men, something which historically was not the case: during the code-breaking efforts that took place at Bletchley Park in World War II, the computer operators were near-exclusively women; going back still further, Lady Ada Lovelace is generally considered to represent the world's first computer programmer for her work with Charles Babbage on his mechanical computing machines.

Sounds very interesting. :shifty:

This lady wasn't too shabby either. Think COBOL.

When I started in IT in mid-1980s, I worked for a man who had been to a lecture given by Grace Hopper. He said she was amazing. Wish I'd been there.

Grace Hopper - The Mother of Cobol

Rear Admiral Grace Brewster Murray Hopper was responsible not only for the development of the Cobol language but also for the continuous pressure within the industry to make computers and computing more accessible and to to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront.

The history of computer hardware invention is mostly a male-oriented affair. This isn't unexpected given that the early computers had more to do with heavy engineering than logic.

However when it comes to software the picture is a little different. It is generally acknowledged that the first programmer was female - Ada Countess of Lovelace but Ada was just the first in a long line of dedicated women programmers.

Perhaps the most famous, important and colorful of this army, or should it be navy, of female software experts is without doubt Rear Admiral Grace Brewster Murray Hopper. She was responsible not only for the development of the Cobol language but for the continuous pressure within the industry to make computers and computing more accessible.

The story I heard was that the team actually found a large moth among the tubes of the computer they were working on, hence her use of "debug", but I don't know if it's actually true.

"If during the next five years any one of you says, 'but we've always done it that way,' I will instantly materialize beside you, and I will haunt you for 24 hours and see if I can get you to take another look. And I know it works. I've already had over 100 letters thanking me for haunting people."

Hello,

While not working in open source, my colleague Lysa Myers talked about her transition from florist to computer security researcher in this article in Investor's Business Daily.

She gives some good advice.

Raise your hand. "Asking questions — that's the thing that got me from receptionist to the (computer) virus lab," Myers said. "It's so much about curiosity and passion and willingness to learn."

Show up. Myers went out of her way to attend events and meet people. "This is such a small and tightly knit industry," she said.

Wonder if a place like ESET would hire a lady who is heavy into security on all three OS. ;)

Likely not ... a lady would be bad enough but nearly 60 ;)

Hmm, don't think you would enjoy being telephone support. However there is one position that you may qualify for.

I don't need a job abarbarian, but wouldn't mind some additional hours from home. ;)

Of course I was hoping to work from my home here in VA. ;)

I wouldn't mind San Diego but would they move us is the real question...and would Jim want to move to CA. ...

I know you are a busy bee. What you need is less hours and more loot for the ones you do. My post was jocular though it would be interesting to see if they would consider you for the job. If they did offer a interview that would be a ego boost an they may be offering mega bucks.

What kind of a researcher would we be if we couldn't find ESET job listings. ;)
