Sound Blaster Audigy2 & Mandrake

I have to get something to eat... Mandrake is sucking me in..... Anyway, after I get a bit to eat, and tinker with the router a bit, I want to go ahead and get sound to work in Mandrake. I am using the "audigy" driver.... I don't know if it is the way to go or not. Aumix comes up and I can play with the sliders, but no joy yet.

Good idea. Will do the same.Getting your router working first is a good priority.I will post a modified test plan shortly.

Ross:The situation with the Audigy 2 is a bit confused, and I don't have one to compare it to. So we are going to have to take it slow and easy to get this checked out.I have an ulterior motive in this, I am very interested in using Linux for sound recording, mixing, and mastering. One of the tasks I have is to build a personal experience database with individual cards so you will be helping me as well. (LOL what a duh moment, Dilbert would love me, could not spell in-duh-vidual for a second). One of the problems is that it appears that Mandrake 9.1 is running a bit behind the curve with stock support for sound. This is not a big issue as the pending 9.2 release should catch it up again. To work around that problem we can use the Knoppix 3.3-2003-09-22 Live CD. I have another system booted with Knoppix and it has another problem child sound card (Turtle Beach Santa Cruz). I have and will use that system to pre-test the steps and double check if there are any problems.Ok, let's get started. We have several phases to go through.1)Preparation:Gather together all the test materials we will need. They are:-Test MP3 file-Test Midi file--Both of the above should available from your W2K partition. If not, we can grab some from the net. I wll look for some test cases in a sec. Want to copy these files from your W2K partition to your Mandrake home directory. This will make sure NTFS problems are not clouding the situation.-Audio CD (Anything will do, My choice for the moment is Sketches of Spain).-Audio CD Cable. Only necessary if we can't get IDE CDDA to work. Let me know if you already have one installed.-Knoppix Live CD 3.3-2003-09-22Let me know when the prep is done and we will continue with the next phases. FYI, the phases are:2)Pre-test the Drake. Identify what the Drake has you configured as now.3)Test normal sound with Knoppix4)Test Alsa with Knoppix5)Fix the Drake, based on lessons learned. While you are doing your prep, I will get some more detailed instructions together for the next steps. ;)

I got MIDI's, I got MP3's, and I got CD's.Audio CD's are not a big thing for me..... I usually just rip to the Hard Drive. If we can get IDE CDDA working, great. One of my friends has an audio cable in his machine. I will just rip it out. :)Knoppix may be an issue. I have 3.2, so if we NEED 3.3, I will need an iso burning proggie for drake, as my win2k install is now toast (drake must have some likttle SPECWAR penguins with the mission of killing win****). ;) ;) :w00t:

Tip: Burning ISO'sIf you want to work on getting your W2K system back, we can do that too. Just open up another trouble report topic and we can work on it there.Your call.

I would prefer it. I have a Knoppix 3.2 as well but it would be best if we had the latest Knoppix drivers available.

Lot's of tools for this in Linux. My favourite so far in Linux is Grip, but, it does not match up to my WXP MusicMatch Plus setup.Word of warning. I have yet to find a player in Linux that handles MP3Pro as anything other than stock MP3. You lose most of the high frequency detail.

Great: Next step is to see what the Drake has allready set up for you.We will use MCC->Hardware and then check the details for the sound card.Select your sound card and then tell me everything in the Information Window. Tip: You can select the text in the window, copy it, and then paste it into the message window.eg:

Ok. That is good. You have what I expected plus you have the alternative alsa driver (snd-emu10k1) available.I want to switch over to Knoppix now. We will be doing this in 2 steps.First "knoppix noapic" and then "knoppix alsa noapic". That will test both possible environments without changing anything on your Mandrake install.Give me a yell when you are on Knoppix. You can use your favourite browser directly from the taskbar.

Great. First thing is to start a Knoppix console. Then, from the command line type the commanddmesg | egrep -i audio\|snd\|soundYou may want to copy that line and paste it into the console.Let me know what the results are.

Creative EMU10K1 PCI Audio Driver, version 0.20, 18:08:42 Sep 19 2003

Excellent. The preferred non alsa driver.Just a sec while I recheck my menu options here. While I do that, you should browse your harddrive from the icons on the desktop and locate your mp3 and midi test files.PS: I am stuck in Mozilla now as well. Very difficult to cut and paste across a KVM switch.

Ok: (Minor Tip: I moved to a new desktop for the following, keeps the audio tools out of the way of the console, etc. The desktop control is on the taskbar just after your Mozilla icon). We will be using KDE->MultiMedia->SoundFirst: KMix - The KDE Mixer control.Move the first 2 controls to the top settings. Unless you have 2 CDs on your system we will ignore testing CDDA for now. If you do have 2 then also move the CD control to 100.Second: XMMS - The MP3, etc playerWe need to make it visible to work with for starters. Right-Click on XMMS and select Options->Double Size. Now we need to play a file. Right-Click->Play File and then locate one of your MP3sThen click the play button.

If the volume is too loud ( I HOPE ). The volume control is below the status window at the left. Otherwise use the mixer. If you can not find your files they are under /mnt/hd...If the partition appears to be empty click on the appropriate icon on the desktop and it will be automatically mounted for you.

Kmix is not showing any sliders...

It is a little window, about 250x250 pixels, that is blank
Very strange. Ok. Close that window and try aumix.
