Grogerf Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 (edited) Hurray ! sigh !! . . . Okay we will install that one to: # rpm -ihv ftp://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/MandrakeCooker/2007.0/x86_64/media/main/release/lib64gstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0.10.9-1mdv2007.0.x86_64.rpm Hope we will not discover we are in an infinite loop of installing packages . . . . My advise to future installers of Mandriva on a 64bits computer will be to install the 32 bits version !! Okay . . . just open the /etc/sysconfig/network file in an editor and add this line: Then don't delay to reboot your computer, adn after the reboot the hostname will be set :DB) Bruno Hallo again Bruno ,My hostname has changed again and I don't know how it happened . I was in MCC & did the update & downloaded some programs (Kim & some audio stuff & documentation) Then I went into a terminal and found "roger@private-7r9kyz9 ~" grandpa has gone I went into the /etc/sysconfig/network file and it says :-NETWORKING=yesGATEWAY=XXX.XXX.XX.X (actual numbers replaced here) HOSTNAME=grandpaNo change here! Then I went to the /etc/hosts file and it read :-127.0.0.1 grandpa localhost AAPT Grandpa - not sure if this has changed, but not a sign of "private" Can you tell what I've done ?I'd like to get back to grandpa Looking forward to being told what I've done & how to fix it GrogerfHallo Bruno grandpa is back I closed down & switched off the power. Then about half an hour later rebooted and saw :-[roger@grandpa ~]$ on entering a terminal. So it seems i didn't change anything - didn't think I had But what did happen?Looking forward to enlightenment Grogerf Edited March 4, 2007 by Grogerf Quote
Bruno Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Hi GrogerMaybe it is time to start using a static IP addess ( and not DHCP ) from your router . . . Here is what you can do:First check with the command "# ifconfig eth0" what IP address ( inet addr )you currently get from the router. Also note down the "Mask" Then go in the MCC --> Internet & Networking and first "Delete a network interface" . . . next choose the button "Set up a new network interface (LAN, ISDN, ADSL, ...)" and set up the connection ( when using a router = LAN !! ) using a static IP address you will need: 1). The IP address you found with # ifconfig eth02). The netmask ( the "Mask" you found with # ifconfig eth0 )3). The gateway ( you had it in /etc/sysconfig/network )While running through the wizard setting up the connection it will ask if you want to set up a "hostname" . . . . . give it the "grandpa" and it should push the "grandpa" to the router at boot BrunoPS: In the /etc/hosts the line 127.0.0.1 grandpa localhost should be enough :'( Quote

(Eth0 is already set up using a static IP address using another provider.)The network DID NOT want to work with static settings It reported that all was well, but would not connect to anything. When I first trid to set up the network with static settings and put in the IP address only all the other boxes filled automatically, however the gateway was a different number. I forced the gateway to be as previously and tried the system. It appeared to be correct, indicated that the network was up, but would not connect. Next I deleted that network & set up a static network allowing the automaticaly selected numbers to remain. Again same story - looked OK, told me network was up, but wouldn't connect. I deleted that network & this time set up a network with DHCP. This time it told me it was working and connected. Then I went into a terminal SU to root to change the /etc/hosts file and it couldn't connect to the Xserver when I tried to use konqueror : This is what appeared :-[roger@grandpa ~]$ suPassword:[root@grandpa roger]# konqkonqueror konquest[root@grandpa roger]# konquerorXlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by serverXlib: No protocol specifiedkonqueror: cannot connect to X server :0.0[root@grandpa roger]#I tried shutting the system down & turning off the power for a few moments before rebooting and tried again- sadly same story :'( How do I reconnect with the X server from a terminal so that I can edit files as root?Looking forward to some insight here Grogerf Quote
Bruno Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Hi GrogerTo start the konqueror filebrowser as root you can give the command ( as user !! ) $ kdesu konqueror OR, even better $ kdesu kfmclient openProfile filemanagement ( Note: it will open in the /root "home" directory )As for the troubles with the static IP address . . . . . I wonder what went wrong, but in any case the default values the wizard proposes are not correct, you have to change them to the correct values. Maybe try again ? Do you have a software firewall running ? Bruno Quote
