Owyn
It must be. Using the right type of cable, a quick reboot, and I am now online with PV4!Everything seems to be good to go...... any tests I should run?Good job on the cable. Auto-detect is chancy. Best to use the correct cable. To Confirm:1) Your PV5 CD worked on the Shuttle (Liberty??)2) You have 256MB Ram installed on Rebel (Run "free" to check)
ross549
1. Yes. ( I should create a computer specs page on my site.... )2. I have 384MB in Rebel.

Will get it right for Rebel2. Unfortunately I am out of ideas at the moment. Will do some more checking around re PV5 and SCSI. In particular I want to check for SCSI module changes in the boot kernel.Hmmm.One more test possible. Can you boot Rebel to some LInux from the HD and check the CD from there.See here

Owyn
After a bit more fiddling, I am now online. However, it did not go to the resolution I specified. What sort of fiddling? What resolution did you specify? Which resolution did you get?
ross549
I specify 1280x1024... the last time I rebooted, it went to 1024x768.The one thing I am noticing.... it does not connect to the net easily. It is loading the right driver, but I can't resolve domain names.
ross549
OK, this is what I am seeing for now.....When I do a cold boot "bringing up interface eth0" fails. However, when I attempt to connect, and reboot, the connection is up and ready to go. I have verified this twice.

Owyn
I am going to stop for the night. See you all tomorrow!Have a good one Adam.It looks like your network card is having problems loading due to SCSI conflicts. If you did not have a SCSI system you would be a good candidate for "livecd noscsi".SCSI takes longer to stabilize from a cold boot than a warm boot.Manual reset of ethernet is probably only solution from a CD boot.Adding reset to rc.local is possilble solution for HD install. It will run after everything else is finished. The ethernet not enabled is the same for PV4 and PV5. Correct?Ummm. Domain resolution. Sounds like you may have to add your ISPs DNS servers to /etc/resolv.conf.Well. I will leave this for tonight as well. See if Bruno catches anything else in the morning. ross549
That is what my SuSE box does. But in order for the test machine to go online, I have to reboot it.

Owyn
This is bizarre. The machine just cold booted and internet worked fine. ????LOL. It knew you had it beat.Seriously, it is a timing issue with SCSI. Sometimes it feels like a nut, sometimes it don't.
ross549
Timing? Across the PCI bus?
Owyn
Timing? Across the PCI bus?No. Timing as to when the SCSI devices come to bus ready.
ross549
and because I have 4 devices, this taking longer. I get it.
Owyn
eg: Many years ago I had problems with SCSI drives which would not come to ready before the boot loader timed out looking for a boot device.Solution. Ctl-Alt-Del and retry boot. Drives were already spun up, so they came to ready within the boot timeout period.
ross549
Hmm.. will have to look into the SCSI setup on my computer for a delay option..
Owyn
Adam:While I am talking to you. Can you recap any open problems we have with your systems. I am trying to get my todo/problems list cleaned up.Should have started a new journal log for PV5.
ross549
Well, I fiddled around in the SCSI BOIS settings, but did not find anything that would set a longer delay. Abandoning that, I moved to the system BIOS. There I discovered something interesting: The ethernet adapter was set to on, but with PXE off. The ethernet options were as follows: Disabled On (PXE off) On I set it to on, and when I booted, I did not get the usual message saying that eth0 initialization failed. Definately a good sign. I am going to shut down and cold boot the CPU to see if that boots good too. I still have not heard a peep from the sound card (SB LIve PLatinum) yet, but I suspect the headphones are plugged into the wrong port, and I cannot see it well. Is there a sound file somewhere on the disc that I can try out?
