Owyn, here's the "3D report"...much better results than pre4:

Didn't do the "soundchk", as I have it working fine. I'm keeping this version!! :)

LOL. 3D results are all over the map. That is almost twice the fps that you got from PV4.

Hi Owyn Here are the test results of my main system ( with 3D ): Here the sound was muted at boot . . . I think the difference with my testsystem, where the sound was NOT muted, is that I started my test system as root to add the new user.

Owyn,Tecra 8200 PIII 900MHz, 512MB, 20GB win2k/NTFS, WiFi-B (prob, no PCMCIA), 10/100 NIC (no prob), modem (untested - no dial-up), 16MB video... more details?? where do I go? what do I do?Preview 5 would hang hard failing to boot past PCMCIA on my Tecra 8200 (or I'm way to impatient). The last line read something like PCI1410? It was part of PCMCIA through as I'm writing from PC Linux OS 2k4 pre5 now with nopcmcia and noscsci options. xmms is a problem correct? What esle can I test sound with?Getting delayed video.?? Battery meter said it was low, so I checked how low. It didn't go away immediately after being in the top corner for 15 seconds, and fumbling to plug the laptop to wall. Mouse is hard to follow at times, no trail and vanishes in the text area to write this in (yuck!).In this regard, pre4 was much better and booted without incident with PCMCIA. Why did they have to break things?? How can I test WiFi-B in preview 4?I plan to test pre5 on the Asus P2B-L Intel i440 and the Asus P3V4X Via Apollo Pro133A by the end of the weekend. Maybe a HD install??? :whistling:

Boot options nopcmia is understood. Not sure why you needed noscsi on notebook.xmms should work. Please post a soundchk.sh report for your system. Most likely problem is muted volumes. It will show on the soundchk report. Run aumix, adjust volumes, and retest audio.

Try testing with livecd xres= and xbbp=16. Use the native resolution for your laptop for xres, eg. xres-1024x768

Part of the problem is that a lot of work in the last few weeks went into adjusing mklivecd so that it could be authored and run with kernel 2.6. Unfortunately that seems to have caused some things to get a bit rough around the edges for kernel 2.4 and PV5. The good news is that kernel 2.6 support is now out of alpha with the tmb 10mdk kernel. The bad/good news is that the code was not forked to accomplish this. Preview 5 has been held up several times to fix known problems. It had however now reached the point that a wider test was badly needed. hwdetect in particular had LOTS of changes.:DWiFi should now work out of the box. The wlan drivers were upgraded for PV5.Ooops. Just re-rereading this. Your problem is getting Pcmcia working after boot. I know that it can be done, but I need to check the details.

:DTx for the info tecky. Check the documentation for a hard disk install howto. If you don't see it at first, try Shift-Refresh.

Eliminating all possibilities for hanging problem. :) Sound came though on shutdown. Is sound mute as default? :D Xmms play button didn't want to work.

I thought xres=1024x768 and xbbp=16 were default. :D 1024x768 is native to the laptop, or something like that. Will take another gander.

LOL... Don't get to fazzled. It has an intergrated WiFi-B, but it still needs PCMCIA functioning first.

soundchk.sh 1.02 is in /usr/local/bin on the CD. No need for an external copy.USB floppy should be autodetected and mounted as any other device.Ummmm. Need to check what the dev would be.
(Might need to be pulled out as it's own topic and as a tip for future users; especailly of newer laptop and some desktop users.)
Tips will be moved to the documentation section of the PCLos site as developed. Probably a FAQ.

Owyn, I posted my specs of two additional PC's at work in Volunteer thread. Now it hit me for the first one with a lot of errors, I've seen a lot of wierd messages, like "cp can not read device" "noaccess to ..." and similar.I've never seen something similar with so many errors.I think I found a culprit, is it possible that my BIOS has enabled "guard on chip" or something similar.Maybe it is protecting it from "viruses"??Anyway, I'll try again afternoon with that thing disabled so we'll see. ;) ;)

Tx Zox:If you could report the first couple of errors it would help a lot in troubleshooting. The rest of the errors are probably redundant or caused by the initial errors.Worth trying the virus guard. Though it should not be causing problems with a Live CD. No writes to the HD with the exception of the swap file. Well maybe file system checks on mount. Try "livecd fstab=ro".

Did you try modprobe usb-storage?  Tip for USB devices?
Thanks teacher. That hit the nail square right on the head. But what did that do? ;) Strange how you have to presume sda or sda1. ;) How can you further tell where the USB floppy has gone just by looking?(p.s. - Owyn, I was thinking more along the lines of a new 'USB Floppy' thread here in ATL because it should be netrual to any particular distro; then again, maybe it's basically been covered already per teacher's pointer to an existing item.)

Tx Julia. That will help with any USB device. Tips uber alles.Tecky: I decided to start a PV5 tips thread anyway. The support thread gets very noisy and it will be handy to have a ATL FAQ until such time as Tex gets the main documentation updated.

Hi Owyn On your request: the /etc/ld.so.conf's . . . . have to say they look really good on first sight. Test System, HD install:

[bruno@uranus bruno]$ cat /etc/ld.so.conf /usr/X11R6/lib /usr/lib/qt3/lib /usr/lib/ati/lib /usr/lib/nvidia/lib /usr/lib/xfree/lib

Test System, Live:

[guest@uranus guest]$ cat /etc/ld.so.conf /usr/X11R6/lib /usr/lib/qt3/lib /usr/lib/ati/lib /usr/lib/nvidia/lib /usr/lib/xfree/lib

Main System, Live:

[guest@jupiter guest]$ cat /etc/ld.so.conf /usr/X11R6/lib /usr/lib/qt3/lib /usr/lib/ati/lib /usr/lib/nvidia/lib

I checked the last one twice because it has no "/usr/lib/xfree/lib" as path to the libs . . but then that one does actually use the "/usr/lib/nvidia/lib" and the others don't . . Hope I did miss anything else . . this thread is pretty hectic . .:ermm: :) :ermm: Bruno

Tx Bruno. They are actually all wrong for one reason or another. It just happens that sometimes two (or three) wrongs will make a right. In theory there should be only one GLX lib for a system. In practice, well .... It was a long night last night, and it looks like a longer weekend.

Have FUN Owyn !!!:) BrunoPS: as far as I know the ld.so.conf indicates the paths to the libs . . . so they can not all be wrong . . maybe the ones pointing to /usr/lib/ati/lib and /usr/lib/nvidia/lib are doubling themselves ?

Only one of /usr/lib/ati/lib, /usr/lib/nvidia/lib, and /usr/lib/xfree/lib should be used/required.If you check the libraries in PV5 you will see that there are duplicated libraries for the drivers. However, there is something wrong with the combination of the tmb kernel and Tex's compiled drivers.LOL. I have /sbin/ldconfig added to rc.sysinit to make sure that I can recover from bad caches. Seen more black screens at boot than I want to remember. Using boot to Mdk92 to repair PCLos.
