Owyn
As Bruno, and now the rest of you are aware, I have joined the mklivecd and PcLinuxOs projects. There are still a lot of hardware and configuration issues that need to be shaken out to get the PcLInuxOs distro past preview status and get the mklivecd project to 1.0 status. Some background. PCLinuxOS is a community based non-profit distribution initially based on Mandrake Linux. Just think of it as Mandrake Linux enhanced by Texstar on a single bootable live CD with 1.5GB of desktop applications and the ability to install right to your hard drive with everything ready to work out of the box. NVIDIA drivers, Flash, Java, urpmi setup, and of course all the cool application updates by Texstar. And if we get all the bugs out of the mklivecd program then YOU can make your own Mandrake-style bootable CD as well.Texstar is the developer and packager for PcLinuxOs. But, he depends on the mklivecd project for the authoring scripts and hardware detection. He also depends on the community, both within and without the project, to test as many configurations as possible.eg: A problem with Toshiba laptops was finally identified as not being able to support resolutions of 1024x768x24, the max depth they can handle is 1024x768x16. The result of tracking this down is that the default depth has been changed from 24bit to 16bit. This will let older systems boot and still allow other users to change there resolutions to whatever there systems can handle. In this case, the change has been implemented in the mklivecd project and passed on to the PcLinuxOs project. What I would like to do is to enlist the support of the forum for ongoing tests of the distro. I want to get the pieces in place before Preview 4 is ready for testing. What I need from the forum is a list volunteers and specific details for available test systems. A sample hardware spec follows. It was created from manuals and by checking Mandrake MCC->Hardware->"HardDrake" and "Configure Your Monitor".Identification: Owyn - Linux DesktopManufacturer: White BoxModel: DesktopMotherboard: Asus A7V-ECPU: Duron 850RAM: 256MBVideo: nVidia TNT Riva2 Model 64Monitor: Plug 'n Play (Royal Information Company TRL/RIC DH-1764M/DH-1764)Sound: Creative Sound Blaster 16 PCI (snd-ens1371)NIC: DLink DFE-538TX 10/100 Wired Ethernet (8039too)Modem: External Serial V.90 Cdrom(Primary): LG CD-ROM CRD-8522BCdrom(Secondary): NoneMouse: Logitech PS2 Wheel Mouse (psaux)Printer: HP DeskJet 720C (Local, Parallel Port)Other: Onstream DI-30 IDE Tape drive (needs ide-scsi osst)Comments: Connects via router to Internet. Uses KVM switch for Video/Keyboard/MouseWhat I will do is co-ordinate the testing of a new release by announcing it as a new topic, then, consolidate the test results for reporting back to the project mailing lists. I am working on a specific test plan that should cover most of the major issues without requiring a lot of time to test. This test plan may change from release to release depending on what has changed.I may also enlist specific volunteers to test hardware specific issues (eg. A new Sis driver may solve a specific problem. Need to pretest it before it gets included in the next release.). I will also try to expedite solving any problems that are determined. (eg: We are working on a real list of cheatcodes for the distro.)Hope you can help to build what may be one of the best out-of-the box distros available. Owyn
Sounds great. Do I assume correctly that you want us to PM you with our hardware details or do you want it posted here?Probably best to post them on the forum. That way you won't need to re-enter details in test reports. Just your system identifications.I will be entering them into a database for reporting purposes. Might be a spreadsheet. Might be XML. Got to decide (soon).

Owyn
( I still use the 'old' 2.6 test kernel )Tx.No real reason to upgrade from test9.4 to test9.6 if you don't have hardware problems. Main thing was to make sure people knew about test9.6 before the next set of changes come down the pipe. I have this feeling that test9.7 is going to be a release to avoid. Almost every system is using substantially different components. As far as SATA is concerned, I suspect the problem is upstream to mklivecd, ie. in the Mandrake pieces.Made a note to follow up, but, it will probably be very low priority. Fixing things that don't work is top maintenance priority (yours works, just slowly). and, getting HD installer to work is probably top development priority.
