SueD
Shame we couldn't get it happening, Sue. Debian's always been great for me, and I bet it's a very minor config issue like failure to get correct EDID data from the monitor.Anyway, Vector works well for me too, so lots of luck there!BTW, which distros have you run successfully on that machine?I'm a little disappointed too but hey, I guess it wasn't meant to be. It seems to work great on hubby's computer but I really haven't had the chance to kick the tires, so to speak, since I've been a little preoccupied trying to get it to work on mine. C'est la vie, eh.Slackware and Mandriva, both with a little work, have always done well here as has PCLos, Vector and Fedora. Dreamlinux and Absolute needed a little more work but nothing compared to what I was trying to do the past couple of days. I'm sure there were others but my memory's failing me at the moment.I started with Ubuntu. Eric pointed me here when I was having trouble configuring my modem. I've tried Zen, Mepis, Mint and Kannotx (I think that was it) and again, none of them liked my modem. I was pretty excited to see my computer connect with Debian without any help from me. Who knew it would be my video card to give me trouble?LOL And since I have no intention of replacing it until I have to, I'll stay away from any Debian based distros, at least on this box. Bruno
I once had a computer that would not run anything that smelled like Fedora and SuSE . . . . I was so annoyed I ended up ditching it Bruno

Ubuntu and Dreamlinux are both based on Debian . As are Mepis, Mint and Kanotix (which evolved into Sidux) .If it was my PC, I think I'd threaten it with a big hammer until it capitulated. Urmas
Hmm, maybe I need a new computer! Nah, I can't justify the cost when I've got one that works.LOL It works? When it pukes on Debian based distros? (OK, I may be just a tad biased here...)I browsed HERE a bit - just for fun, mind you - and... well... if you don't want to buy "The-Blue-Danube-Of-All-The-Computers-That-Will-Be-Current-Even-After-Five-Years™", you won't have to spend much... a modest (370 Canadian, 230 European, 290 American) example here:http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?d...945&cid=170My money comes and goesMy money comes and goesMy money comes and goesAnd rolls and flows and rolls and flowsThrough the holes in the pockets in my clothes

Dreamlinux has never worked on this desktop. It worked on my old Toshiba laptop. According to my notes, it would hang somewhere during boot and never made it to X.I spent a lot of money to buy this thing almost 5 years ago...I'm not putting a hammer anywhere near it! I've also priced the components separately to see if it might be cheaper to build my own...again, just for fun.
sunrat
Yeah, I browse all the time too, just for fun. I've also priced the components separately to see if it might be cheaper to build my own...again, just for fun. It's only money. My computer repair/upgrade only cost $AU685. You can get a whole new PC here in Oz for under $400! The mobo died so I replaced it and the power supply and CPU and RAM. There's almost enough bits now to build a "new" old computer. The new one is better, faster, stronger.
