Time to update to MDV 2008 64 bit?

Hallo folks :D ,I've been away for a wee while - quite a while longer than intended :( - a few family dramas of the lending a hand type :) came up and whoops there goes another month! Now it's almost next year - So happy New year to all :D :D :D Whilst time was sliding by I wasn't doing any computing :'( Now that I'm back is it now "safe" for me to download the 64 bit version of Mandriva 2008 and install it :hmm: (The last advice I was given on this subject was to wait a while for the distro to 'settle down' before I made the move.)Whilst I've been away I see that Mandriva have changed the arrangements for downloading distributions - it seems that you can now get two versions for one payment B) .This current installation has created the odd heart ache by running out of space in /var/ B) ;) and log was put out on a link to create some space :P . The original partitions were created manually by a guru and I'd like to overwrite all these partitions in the new installation, allowing the installation process to determine the appropriate sizes, but of course keep all the personal data :hmm: . Looking forward to another year of Linux  !Grogerf

Yep I think it is a good time to upgrade . . . . seems most pressing issues are solved, or there is a fix posted in the ErrataOn the partitions you want to re-organize: . . as long as they are at the end of the disk you can delete them and recreate just 3 partitions, a /home, a / and a /swap partition is all you need ( no separate /var or /boot needed ).But I repeat: the ones you delete need to be at the end of the disk !!!B) Bruno

Hallo again Bruno  Thank you for your reply  I'll get onto the 'minister for finance' to release the funding B) Is there an option in the installation routine that enables the installation to create it's own partitions?Looking forward to more good information.Grogerf

Yes, the installer is able to do that.I'm running the 64bit version of Mandriva 2008 Free on this laptop : I've got no complaints other than a few quirks. See my profile for more information : machine 1.

Yep there is . . . but I doubt you will be happy with the sizes it chooses for the partitions. Bruno

Hallo Bruno B) Thanks for your reply  I guess the best thing would be for me to download MDV 2008 Powerpack 64 bit, then get back to you with the partition sizes & mount points that are on my machine for any changes you suggest. Would that be a good way to go? Grogerf

Hallo Bruno B) Thank you for your agreement on the modus operandi B) I'm downloading the BitTorrent file from Mandriva now - in a little over 24 hours it will be here if all's well  (Yep really really slow speeds here in the Land of Oz - something to do with effective monopolies in Telcos and a lack of understanding of what would happen in the folks that set it all up a few years back. Now we have to unscramble the egg!)Grogerf

Hallo Bruno :D Thanks for your instructions ;) Still downloading the file :) , but here's the results on the current install whilst we're waiting :D [root@Grandpa roger]# df -hFilesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on/dev/hda1 8.0G 272M 7.7G 4% //dev/hda8 40G 25G 15G 63% /home/dev/hda11 48G 28G 20G 58% /mnt/distro/dev/hda10 46G 2.8G 43G 7% /mnt/win1/dev/hdb1 75G 13G 62G 18% /mnt/winC/dev/hda9 981M 2.1M 929M 1% /tmp/dev/hda6 5.9G 4.6G 1.4G 78% /usr/dev/hda7 4.1G 4.1G 0 100% /var[root@Grandpa roger]#[root@Grandpa roger]# fdisk -lDisk /dev/hda: 163.9 GB, 163928604672 bytes255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19929 cylindersUnits = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System/dev/hda1 * 1 1033 8297541 83 Linux/dev/hda2 1034 19929 151782120 5 Extended/dev/hda5 1034 1236 1630566 82 Linux swap / Solaris/dev/hda6 1237 2000 6136798+ 83 Linux/dev/hda7 2001 2525 4217031 83 Linux/dev/hda8 2526 7699 41560123+ 83 Linux/dev/hda9 7700 7826 1020096 83 Linux/dev/hda10 7827 13768 47729083+ b W95 FAT32/dev/hda11 13769 19929 49488201 83 LinuxDisk /dev/hdb: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylindersUnits = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System/dev/hdb1 * 1 9729 78148161 7 HPFS/NTFS[root@Grandpa roger]#As you will probably know from the results above, there are two hard drives (80 &160 GB), distro, win1,and winC are partitions of the second drive, with links into the home folder. I'm not sure where about 20G of the 80G drive has gone - hope it's still there somewhere :hmm: (Is it time to consider adding another drive maybe SATA this time the others are all IDE and the motherboard will accept SATA as well as IDE :hmm: ) (I don't use Windows now, it's just there in case I need to OCR.)Win 1 was to make files available to both Mandriva & Windows and distro is just storage for downloaded distributions until I decide either to make a CD/DVD or dispose of them.Hope it all makes sense B) I hope I'll have the MDV 2008PWP burned to a DVD when I return B) Grogerf

/dev/hda11 48G 28G 20G 58% /mnt/distro
Here is a 48G hda 11 partition that is mounted on /mnt/distro . . . . is there important data on it ?? Could we back that up . . and also the things on hda10 and /home ( hda8 )See, the partition table is such that we practically need to wipe that drive clean in order to make new partitions . . B) UPDATE: Just noticed, your /var is 4.1G and 100% full . . . . . something is not right: my /var has only 259M data in it . . . ( can you do a "du -s /var" and see if maybe your log files are exploding ? );) Bruno

Hallo Bruno :D I now have the MDV2008 powerpack DVD burned and verified B) ;) Here is the result of du -s /var not sure that I've done the right thing here :hmm: [root@Grandpa roger]# du -s /var4.0G /var[root@Grandpa roger]#I've emptied 'distro' by reformatting win1, calling it 'spare' and shifting all the data from 'distro' into 'spare' (also had to shuffle some stuff around so as not to loose it during the reformat).Here's what it looks like now [root@Grandpa roger]# df -hFilesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on/dev/hda1 8.0G 272M 7.7G 4% //dev/hda8 40G 22G 18G 56% /home/dev/hda11 48G 33M 48G 1% /mnt/distro/dev/hdb1 75G 13G 62G 18% /mnt/winC/dev/hda9 981M 2.1M 929M 1% /tmp/dev/hda6 5.9G 4.6G 1.4G 78% /usr/dev/hda7 4.1G 4.1G 0 100% /var/dev/hda10 46G 35G 12G 76% /mnt/spare[root@Grandpa roger]#[root@Grandpa roger]# fdisk -lDisk /dev/hda: 163.9 GB, 163928604672 bytes255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19929 cylindersUnits = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System/dev/hda1 * 1 1033 8297541 83 Linux/dev/hda2 1034 19929 151782120 5 Extended/dev/hda5 1034 1236 1630566 82 Linux swap / Solaris/dev/hda6 1237 2000 6136798+ 83 Linux/dev/hda7 2001 2525 4217031 83 Linux/dev/hda8 2526 7699 41560123+ 83 Linux/dev/hda9 7700 7826 1020096 83 Linux/dev/hda10 7827 13768 47729083+ 83 Linux/dev/hda11 13769 19929 49488201 83 LinuxDisk /dev/hdb: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylindersUnits = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System/dev/hdb1 * 1 9729 78148161 7 HPFS/NTFS[root@Grandpa roger]# I'm not sure what's using up the space in 'distro' now but there are no normal files left there.I'm happy cull out unwanted content from 'spare' and then burn what's left to DVD's. (I've started going through the culling process.) However seeing that there's rather a lot there is there a quicker way of perhaps compressing what is to remain :hmm: Looking forward to your reply B) Grogerf

Sorry I should have given you another command . . . try "du -h /var" . . that should produce more output then just the total size of /var. Look down the list and post the directories that are over 1G so we know where the bulk of the data is.
I've emptied 'distro' by reformatting win1, calling it 'spare' and shifting all the data from 'distro' into 'spare' (also had to shuffle some stuff around so as not to loose it during the reformat).
Okay I see that /dev/hda11 is as good as empty . . . that is perfect . . but we still have /dev/hda10 with 23G of data. Also if we really want to go for a new/simple partition table we will need to backup the 22G in /home.BUT: If we can solve your /var size problem . . . we could also choose to keep the same partitions as they are now ( meaning you will not have to backup anything . . . );) Bruno

Hallo Bruno ,Things have moved on a bit! I found that I couldn't use the CD/DVD burner because var was full again  :hysterical: , so "www" and "run" were moved out to "/" and linked back to 'var'(so now we have log, www and run all in '/' and linked into 'var'). "run" proved to be the monster - close to 4G!During the problem with 'var' being over-full I lost some of the desktop settings  - now I have a blank blue desktop background and the icons on the taskbar are larger than I normally have them - but it works - apart from the auto-update feature which we can do without! No dramas here will all be fixed with the new distro :w00t: I've pretty much emptied out /dev/hda10 :w00t: , but I'm having trouble with empting the 'home' folder  . I've done some by copying to CD/DVD, but I couldn't get Drakbackup to work :D - problem with configuring it.Here's what we've got now[root@Grandpa roger]# df -hFilesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted What needs to be done with 'log' , 'www' and 'run' which I moved out to '/' and linked back into 'var'? I guess that 'log' and 'www' aren't a problem, but 'run' certainly seems to be the main culprit with a size of around 4G!Edit2a. Taskbar now fixed & Desktop background set to KDE default. Terminal window in Konsole is still reversed, (with black lettering on a white background) - can't see how to fix this but it's minor & I think it will be fixed with the new install Edited by Grogerf

That is very strange . . . my /var/run is only 78kB . . . . . . we should dig a bit deeper next time it grows out of proportion.Anyway . . . I found a way to keep your /home and still make some changes to partitions:Here is what we do: with the installer you delete partition hda9 hda10 and hda11 . . . next make a new partitions: hda9 = 8GB and hda10 = rest of the space. Then you bail out of the installer ( so it can write the new partitio-table to disk ) and start the install disk again and choose the partitions like this:Old partitions:hda1 /hda6 /usrhda7 /tmphda8 /home ( do not format when installing )New partitions:hda9 = 8G /varhda10 = rest /mnt/spareThat way you have more space for /var and we can set up a plan to monitor it's size after the install. Bruno

Hallo Bruno :D :D Hope you had a good party   I'm now posting from MDV 2008 PWP X86_64 :hysterical: :hysterical: Thank you for all your help :D  :D  The partition manager had me worried - it somehow put the mount point of hda8 as /var even though I hadn't altered hda1 to hda8 B) B) . I manually checked & adjusted all the mount points to what they should be and pressed on :hmm: :whistling: The end result was excellent, all of the data is intact   I've selected the media and an update is in progress (155 packages :( ). When the update is finished, I have to set up the dial up modem (didn't do it on install), add the printers (seem to have seen advice to leave them switched off for mdv 2008 install on this forum :hmm: ) and make sure that xsane and the HP 'all in one ' work properly. Then we need to set up something to keep an eye on what's happening in /var so that I don't end up in the same situation as before  Grogerf

Just keep an eye on /var/run and /var/www . . . .( BTW: I do not have a /var/www at all so I am curious what software you installed that creates this /var/www . . . . . ):hysterical: Bruno

Hallo again Bruno   ,Just checked the new /var and www does not exist - so if it appears after installing or running a program we'll know the culprit - providing I remember to check  The update's just finished B) , so now I can install Xsane, set up the printers and get dial up going :hysterical: Thanks again for your help :hysterical: :whistling: GrogerfEdit1Just checked /var in system monitor and it has 4.3G used!so I did a du -h /var and this is the result:-Password:[root@grandpa roger]# du -h /var0 /var/db0 /var/yp312K Looks like you almost have a full copy of the mirror in there . . . . did you change anything to the default settings when getting the updates ?? OR . . . did you maybe use the "copy DVD to HD" feature of the installer ??My /var/ftp/pub only has a dummy file of 166 Bytes in it . . that is all.B) Bruno

Hallo Bruno :D Thanks for your reply B) B) Yes - guilty as charged :'( :'( I did used the 'copy DVD to HD' feature B) Couldn't find the correct 'how to' when I looked so I just flew by the 'seat of the pants' it promised a faster install - I'm not sure if it was  Should I leave it there or get rid of it some how :hmm: Looking forward to more advice   Grogerf

Well, I think we first will need to look at the software manager in the MCC and see what sources it lists . . . . and disable the source that points to /var/ftp/pub. Next we should monitor if the size of /var/ftp/pub is stable OR maybe is synced with the mirrors every time you connect or update ( I don't know because I never use the feature ).And finally we could try to delete /var/ftp/pub/Mandrivalinux and hope it does not cause havoc . . . B) Bruno

Hallo Bruno :D :pirate: I've disabled the six 'local' sources in the MCC :w00t: Next I guess it's how to monitor /var/ftp/pub - I guess I could do a "du -h /var" and manually write down the result or copy the results to a text file :w00t: Would it be too drastic to do a new installation - this time avoiding the 'copy to HD' feature? :hmm: :hmm: If this could somehow be done without going through all those updates again  , it wouldn't be too much of a drama :hmm: If a new install was going to be a safe solution now would be the time to do it - before any other changes - provided I can avoid all those updates B) GrogerfEdit1Just did a software update using the MCC with the 'local' sources disabled. Worked fine, but paused for a while 'updating sources'.Edit2Tried to install ftp server using the outline given here http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/index.ph...;hl=ftp+server#The set up is the same except for the main machine now running mdv 2008_x64, and the other machine running mdv 2008 One.but ran into trouble with the server not working - no sign of server when I used Konqueror on the second machine. I then removed proftpd and drakwizard from both machines to check if this route is still advised- since I notice that there is already a 'Network sharing' tab in the MCC.I've decided that I'm trying to do too much too quickly & I'd be better taking one step at a time! First get the installation right, then go for files sharing between the two machines and finally share the printers. Edited by Grogerf

Well . . . . myself, in your shoes, I would do a quick re-install and skip the "copy DVD to HD" part . . . just to be 100% sure this issue that is haunting you since last year does not show it's face again. But, also you could just paste the output of "du -h /var/ftp/pub" to a text file and have it on the Desktop to compare once a week with the actual output.B) BrunoI wonder what went wrong with the FTP server . . . . . works fine on my network.

If the partitions are right I would now start from scratch, that means a complete clean reinstall. Then update and after that build up the machine one step after another. B)

Hallo Bruno :hmm: Seems I do things the hard way :hmm: B) I'd rather get things the way they should be now - before I add too many layers of complication! How do I do a 'quick install' - would it leave me with a standard installation and avoid re-doing the updates (several hundred MB @ 50 kb)? :w00t: Once in that happy state  :pirate: We could get the ftp server working by stages. The network connection on both machines is DHCP - maybe that would be the first thing to change once the installation is 'clean'.Looking forward to your next :w00t: Grogerf

Hallo striker :D ,Thanks for your reply - I was considering doing a complete fresh re-install - but the thought of several hours doing the updates filled me with the screaming habdabs B) :pirate: That's why I came back for more advice :w00t: :w00t: I would do a complete fresh install - if there was no alternative :hmm: , and put up with re-doing the updates :hmm: I certainly agree with setting up the network & and then the sharing of the printers step by step  Groger

Yep you will need a static IP address on all systems for this to work . . . . and you can do so at install ( summary screen --> network --> wizard --> not DHCP but manual )B) Bruno
