She does use Quicken, no clue what that is . . . :D do you know a solution ?B) Bruno
Quicken is a windows program for money management by Intuit. The only way I know of to get Quicken to work is to use Crossover Office. Wine should do it but it takes ALOT of tweeking to get it to run. I've never been able to do it. Crossover has allready done all of that.

It's getting a little wild around here. Glad to hear you are still a gentleman. I can't tell if it is any good or not. Shall we go play?It looks like I need crossover office. Shall we try that first? Or do you have that one already?Let the games begin!__________________________Your Pupil - Teach

This one will take a couple of days. I had to email them. I let them know I heard about it here in the newsletter forum. Figured it did not hurt to spread the word a little bit. Don't think I will advertise the TOY award in trying to get a discount. :D Now that I am stalling on that one, what shall we tackle today?_____________________Ready to Go B)

Okay, I am studying. I keep learning things. Can't a gal just have some fun once in a while? We did work real hard for almost 24 hours straight. Now, what other source did you want me to add. The other day you told me I was going to have too many. Make up your mind. Are they like men - you need to stick to one? Or are they like wine - a little variety is nice?Give me a clue__________________________Still the Devoted Pupil

I went back to GnuCash to try to play with that again. It did the same thing the last time I tried to look at it. When I went to try to import fromm quicken it locked up my computer so bad none of the commands would clear it. When I rebooted I had to do a reinstall! I am not going to try that one again. I will just wait for the cross over office full program, not the plug in to try quicken that way.

What a horor story there on the GnuCash . . . you´re right don´t touch it again . . hope the crossover will treat your Quicken better.About the sources, it´s like food, you want to vary things, but not to much either. I tought we could add the PLF and Commercial apps to start with. The PLF is straight foreward like the contirbs. The Commersial apps need a little extra work: the line you paste in your console has to be adapted, where it says NICKNAME you replace that with your nickname ( for the Club ) where it says PASSWORD you replace that with your password, then hit enter !:( Bruno* and you did the re-install all on your own?

Okay - PLF - Is that on the club site? Tell me where to go. (Now there is something I never tell my students) I need a break from my studies on the Mandrake Campus site. By the way, they show a screen for a DrakeConf. I don't find that in my menus. Is that something you bring up from a console or is it something I have not installed yet? Would that help in troubleshooting my sound?I guess I still want to know it all right now. :(

You add the PLF like you did the ¨contrib¨:Log in on the Mandrake Club Site and go to the Preferences page ( that is where you ended up each time anyway )Look for the line: ¨ Better mirror list, exclusively for Club members. Try it out, and judge for yourself. :-)¨ and click on it.You will get the ¨Morror finder¨ Step 1 is set on 9.1, step2 on i586, and put step 3 on ¨contributions¨ then press ¨show me the mirrors¨Press on ¨(URPMI SETUP)¨ of the mirror ftp.nluug.nl ( Netherlands ) or a good mirror in the US if you know one.On the next page, read the text and copy the line printed in bold.Go to a console, log in as ¨su¨ and paste the line after the prompt and hit enter. Now it should work and get the list . . . be patient, it takes a while. Then as you get the prompt back, close the sonsole ( Ctrl+d , 2x ).Only the commercial apps is slightly different like I wrote in previous post: The Commersial apps need a little extra work: the line you paste in your console has to be adapted, where it says NICKNAME you replace that with your nickname ( for the Club ) where it says PASSWORD you replace that with your password, then hit enter !:( BrunoPS I´ll have a look for the soundcard.

Latest status: 2nd Soundcard removed. Computer working great in all respects. Now I guess it is time to think about learning something new. I have gone through a lot of the menus and tried different things out. I feel almost like a pro in configuring a computer in Linux. One of my most helpful lessons was in the Mandrake Control Center. You can go there and click on the hardware tab. From there you can click on any device and then the troubleshoot button. It will give you all the commands you need to be able to figure out what is working correctly and what is not. Mine now looks great. The only oddity is under unknown devices it lists SanDisk and then it continues on to properly read the SansDisk. In fact, everything seems to be working.Next project will include going in and customizing the desktop. I do need to go back and reinstall the firebird browser since my last install. Since I repartitioned and started over I lost the install there. I have been using the various browsers and email programs. I set one email account up in KMail and another in Evolution. That way I can decide which I like best and what I want to use in the future.I have the mozilla browser set up as well as Konqueror. I think I am going back to the Firebird. I like having my tabs like Mozilla does but I prefer being able to selectively permit popups. I automatically go in and allow popups for the forum so I can see PMs as they come in as well as run things like My Assistant. I think the clean install this last time was the trick so I will go and see about installing the PLF for my next project or two.

Hi JuliaI think that second soundcard was bugging the system all along. You just can´t have two soundcards in Linux. Both modules will be loaded at boot ( /etc/modules.conf ) and then you´re in troubles.Doing the URPMI sources for the PLF is a good idea ! I´ll go over to The Tips and pick up the ¨cheat-code¨ you can do after so you won´t get the message ¨no signature¨ every time you install something from the PLF.Good LuckB) Bruno

I did not have a choice of the Dutch site - only French, Canadian and one from Norway so I went with the Canadian. Probably should have picked one of the French since they would not be downloading when I would be doing so. It is now on my list and I am running the "Update" command in the MCC.

O.K. JuliaOnce you see in ¨add software¨ in the MCC onder ¨by source repository¨ the PLF and their packages you can be sure it´s done.Never pick a French site, they are far to busy, and slow, well you know the French . . ;)Next is the cheat code: ( to prevent the error messages )

PENGUIN LIBREATION FRONT UPDATE !For those of you loving the PLF rpm´s just like I do, there is a cheat-code to avoid those messages at install, you know the ones saying that the package misses the official Mandrake signature:Open a console< su >and paste the following line after the prompt:< links -source http://plf.zarb.org/plf.asc | gpg --import > ( The full line not only the link ! But without the < > ) WARNING: you have to be on-line for the trick to work !
That should do it ! <_< Bruno

What is a Hyphen ??The site made a mistake in translating 2 -- into 1 - I changed the line now it is OK ! There have to be 2 -- before import !( the software from the forum does that all the time I always check and double check, but not this time <_< )links -source http://plf.zarb.org/plf.asc | gpg --importNo extra spaces, just copy the line and paste it in your consoleB) Bruno

See normaly an argument for a command can be: ¨-i¨ or ¨--info¨ they do the same thing only ¨-i¨ is shorter, as you use the full name of the argument you have to do ¨--¨. Of course there are exeptions like the one at ¨-source¨ :DB) Bruno

Done! Glad I asked questions before I pressed enter! Some software does like to turn two hyphens -- into an em dash (long hyphen). I know in many you can go to the options and turn that feature off! <_<

Julia,Glad we got that sorted out !Yes the hyphen story is a real pain in writing The Tips and giving advice here on the forum, I often only see it once it is posted and have to PM the user quickly before it´s to late and tell him I changed the post . . . . STRESS !! <_< :DAnyway you know the general rule now so keep an eye out for me !:D Bruno

You know we keep an eye out for you - or maybe two! Now that all these rpm sites have been added, what is worthy of adding to a system that is working great, using one sound card, connecting to the internet? Is there a program, that unlike, KsCD, can play music in more than the primary drive? When I go off and leave a CD in my DVD drive and then do an update, it stops everything while it goes through every sector on the music CD looking for update information. It will sit and do that for 20 minutes. It is the one problem I have discovered.Gee, I only have one problem? Must not be that other operating system. We won't say the W word here!

Julia Better use xmms for playing CDs ! See if you then still have that problem.Basicly you always play music from the master cd-drive though . . <_< Bruno

Knoppix next? Is that what I heard. What are the advantages of Knoppix? Where is the best place to download it? Is that better next than Slack? What do you think? One thing we do know, if I goof up somewhere, I sure know how to start over, repartition, and do a clean install on Mandrake!Oh but I see my bootfloppy is done now. I think I will go take it out of the oven!___________________________Not Turning into Quint

Hi Julia,Bruno's the expert - and I don't mean to interrupt (if I am) - but Knoppix is an excellent choice...not, however, better than Slack. You are doing fantastic! I'm sure that you're far too beautiful, to ever turn into quint.
