The Farmer tries Linux

I found it listed in about three different places where folks had it working. One site pointed out that this is a hardware modem and not a winmodem. That means it should do the trick. It is a rather old model but as long as it works, that should be fine. You just will not be a contestant in any speed races with it. :D

i am about to buy a pcmcia megahertz modem 56k model xj1560
I have a couple Megahertz pcmcia modems [not your model] here that work fine with linux. As noted above, they are 'hardware' modems, requiring no special driver to use. If your linux can read through your laptop's pcmcia chips then they will behave just like an external serial modem. As for speed, 56k is still 56k, no matter how much time has passed since the hardware was made. As a technical detail, the phone lines in the US of A are restricted to 53k maximum -- you won't get faster connects than that with any modem.

As simple as I can make it. A Winmodem has programs installed for the modem that make it work. These programs are set up as windows programs so they only work with Windows. That is why they are called WinModems. A hardware modem has it set up so there is not any extra software required to run it. You just need your configuration settings for it. It has more parts on it that allow it to run without windows. They did not use shortcuts. It is like buying a car that is an automatic or a manual transmission. :hysterical:

You will have to wait for Peachy or one of our samba experts to chime in. I have never used samba. :hysterical: However if you are wanting to network your computers, then the ones for 8.0 would be what you need.

Hi FarmerI get an error on that URL you posted . . . so I can not check if there are RH 8.0 packages for you . . . . Getting the right packages for your version of RH is very important !I found some packages here: http://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/sear...ubmit=Search+...The samba for RH 8.0 is: ftp://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/update...-5.8.0.i386.rpm:hysterical: Bruno
