Hi FarmerI don see either the Alsa-kernel . . . nor the lucent-kernel installed . . . . what happened ??;) BrunoPS: If you take out "DOS" from the bootloader you will not be able to boot Windows anymore . . .

both the alsa and lucent kernel cant be installed they are prompting me to install the same rpm itself..e.g.alsa-kernel.at.i386.rpmthen, it will showalsa-kernel.at unable to locate the fileabout removing the DOS option in grub, I just want to try it out if it will work, and I will revert back the original menu.lst file which I saved earlier. I just want to learn how to edit things and have it made to work

Hi!I would be very hesitant to purchase that modem. It is a winmodem with a Lucent chipset. It shows that someone got it to work but on the website for the company says it has no compatibility with anything other than Windows.

Me too . . I would not buy a winmodem . . even if they say that there are drivers for it.As for the kernels you downloaded . . . where did you download them to ?? Your /home ??;) Bruno

I don't think the output is that clear about your PCMCIA:

Analyzing information for PCMCIA device at PCI Bus 00:02.100:02.1 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCI1250 (rev 02)Subsystem: IBM: Unknown device 0092Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 168, IRQ 11GREPping for an inserted PCMCIA modem with filter: ommunicationIf a PCMCIA modem is currently inserted and the sockets activated by/etc/init.d/pcmcia startthen the PCMCIA bridge is NOT transparent.If the modem is known to have a Lucent digital signal processing chipset,then PCMCIA.tar.gz variant assembled by Joern Wustenfeld is necessary,rather than the standard ltmodem-8.31a10.tar.gz at http://ltmodem.heby.de/GCCversion=3.2
Also it says:
lsmod: command not found

This seems very unusual to me . . . maybe you can open a terminal and type

$ su< password ># lsmod

And see what it puts out to screen.:D Bruno

Hi FarmerI think you will have to make a choice of what you think is more important: The Sound or the Modem . . . . Because they both need a special kernel we will not be able to tackle them both.Now I was reading in the beginning of this thread that you could connect to the internet . . . so is in that case the sound not more important ?It is your choice . . . attack the Sound or the Modem ( and with the modem are we talking the PCMCIA card or the internal modem ? See, with old hardware and an old distro you have to make compromises . . you can't have it all . . . . you could try a more recent distro geared to old hardware ( Vector Linux or Puppy Linux ) . . . or upgrade your hardware that it can handle other recent distros.:angry2: Bruno

@brunoThe sound and modem are the only two left unused in this system but for the meantime,I will upgrade my cardbus modem, I will look for a decent model that is compatible with linuxlet's get on with the sound card problem firstthanks

Farmer ... I'll just toss this out; I have an elderly ThinkPad 600 here, and have had good success with a couple of different linux distros [live cds] using a Megahertz 3ccm156 modem. These were sold by 3com starting maybe 10 years ago, and you could likely find one used [ebay?] pretty cheaply. Mine works far better than the built-in dsp modem in the 600 on win2k, so I've just got that disabled in cmos. Regularly get 50k connections with the 3ccm on a good phone line. Be sure to get one with a cable -- getting a replacement cable would cost more than the modem card. It is just found on bootup and works fine with Kanotix, Knoppix, Mepis, and SAM; maybe others also, but not that many live cds work very well on the 600. Have Kanotix 2005-03 on it right now, best I've seen so far on that laptop. Sound hasn't worked yet, but that isn't important to me on that puter.
