swingkatz
I have a HP scanjet 4300C and I am running Linux (Mandrake 10 I beleive) and It refuses to run. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to get it to run.
SonicDragon
What programs have you tried to scan with.I think mandrake comes with Kooka? Could you find that and try that? Does it give you any error messages or anything?PS: You'll want to check out this page. Your exact model isn't listed there, but they have had success with similar hp models.BTW: I love your avatar
Bruno
Hi swingkatzWelcome to the forum !I am afraid I have bad news for you: That scanner is not supported :(Have a look in the Mandrake Hardware database . . there are a lot of HPs but not the type-number you have. Bruno
Bruno
PART 2We usually configure the scanner in the Mandrake Control Center . . under "Hardware"--> "Scanner" . . . what does the wizard say if you try that ?? . . Is there an option to pick a version number colse to the one you have ?? Bruno
ross549
Holy Smoke! My sister finally shows up! :PBruno, the scanner worked in PCLos. That is the part that is confusing me. I assumed that Mandrake would have better support for hardware tha PCLos. The scanner is detected by the MCC, but Kooka reports that there is no scanner found. Bruno
Hi AdamIf it is recognised in the MCC it should work with Sane . . . . Bruno
trigggl
It looks like a case of finding the kernel module that's loaded in PCLos.Or am I way off base here?
ross549
OK, how can we determine which modules are being loaded?

Bruno
So then you will NOT have that module loaded . . . . it only loads the modules you need :(but if she boots PCLos Live . . configures the scanner and does "lsmod" . . BEFORE and AFTER configuring/plugging in the scanner . . you can see the difference and maybe copy over the driver Bruno

ross549
Amanda....Go into K-> Configuration -> Hardware -> Harddrake and check the scanner section. If the scanner s listed, run the config tool, and save the change. I wonder if that would force the kernel module to be loaded?

ross549
Amanda and I are chatting on MSN. She just fired up Kooka, and it said that SANE is not installed... very odd. Also, for some reason, this particular machine (Mom calls it Hal) does not like the USB card reader that is plugged into the motherboard. This slows boot times to a crawl. It works fine in Windows 2000. Also, we cannot directly open the scanner wizrd, because the install will not open the MCC from the K menu. SonicDragon
I assume the mandrake scanner set up wizard also relies on sane? I think the first step would be to install sane, then if that doesn't work, blame the card reader I'm not too familiar with mandrake, but sane is probably on the cds so, you should be able to install it via mandrake's package manager.
