ChipDoc
I was really enjoying PCLOS/KDE4 but a lot of the fun I was having was from reinstalling it over and over. While I was enjoying myself, I needed something more stable to use on a regular basis. I figured I'd try Gnome and I happened to have the new Ubuntu 10.10 handy on a LiveCD. Well I installed it and I liked what I saw and then I spotted Ultimate Edition 2.8. It's an Ubuntu fork and its distinction is that it has pretty much everything already sitting on that huge 2.4 gig ISO.Well let me tell you - I really LIKE this thing! It's easy and intuitive to get around in, and it comes with gobs of cool tools preinstalled! I'm going to go play for a while and I'll let you know what I find! Guest LilBambi
Sounds like you may have found one to hang on to there Chip! :thumbsup:Then you will need another partition or hard drive to try out more distros! :hysterical:He's hooked folks! amenditman
ChipDoc, just go ahead and buy yourself 4 1TB hard drives. You know that you'll need the space for all this distro installing/testing.You could be like Barry only instead of 30 computers you could have 30 distros.I bet Eric would help you get them all on your sig line.Glad to hear I'm not the only one who does this stuff. securitybreach
Good deal!! You will enjoy running Ubuntu. PCLinuxOS is a great distro but there seems to be lots of quirks with the current version of KDE, at least by what I have seen anyway. Good stuff out there! There's more to life than KDE. aptosid with lxde is screaming fast with latest of everything. Based on Debian, just not stable. Extremely stable despite the Debian naming convention. Rolling release.TinyCore, the smallest, fastest, base system you could ever want. Uses Openbox Window Manager barely one step from command line only. You add only what you need on top of that. Base is 10MB installed.Simply Mepis with KDE, based on Debian Testing and Warren's own customizations. One of the easiest desktop Linuxes. Rolling release. Wiki is second only to the ArchWiki. Great online community help.SliTaz, another super small, fast desktop distro. Weighs in at under 30 MB. Much less to build yourself than TinyCore. There are 4 more really fun Linuxes I can contribute to your 30 distro multi-boot. So's CentOS, Zenwalk, Vector, Mint, Mepis, etc. I loved them all at one time or another. And about those four more really fun ones... don't even dream of saying Gentoo. Frank Golden
BTW, Ultimate Edition 2.8 is slick.Just replaced UE 2.6 with it.There appears to be a bug present in the parent Distro (Maverick) that got carried over to UE 2.8.It concerns Google Earth Linux.Trying to install the latest version of Google Earth (v5.2) using the installer provided by Google results in a install error. The only way to install Google Earth is through Ultamatix or the PPA and that doesn't install 5.2.It instead installs 5.1 with no update available. Not a problem normally, but Google Earth 5.1 in Maverick\UE 2.8 fails to open KML bookmarks when they are clicked. This may be an issue with Google Earth 5.2 as well.No help from the Ubuntu folks or the Google Earth forums.
