Oh, I told him it was this penguin that keeps talking to me on the computer. Then he asks Amsterdam and wonders why I am trying to remember the French he taught me! B) Back on subject. I have been through the approved,. not approved, under consideration, etc. on the Mandrake Club Hardware site. I can not find anything on S-ATA drives. I might have to tear apart Jen's tomorrow while she is at work to remember what I had put in there!

Poor hubby . . that´s all I can say . . . poor hubby . . . .  :D   :D B) Bruno
I don't know why he thinks he needs to go out there sometimes. He has become very particular about "his room" lately.
Probably because he has made some changes out there:  sgi_onyx2_front.jpg

Can't tell what your image was, but he has been practicing his "carpentry skills" out there. You have to take up new hobbies when you are retired. I guess some take up Linux and others try carpentry.

Sorry, Julia, don't know what happened...

I am afraid to ask what it is? Of course, it looks a little too technilogical for poor hubby. It has more than an on switch.

I do believe I am fine on the motherboard I want to buy. I used daughter's computer and ran Knoppix just now. It ran beautifully. No problems except it did not immediately fully process the sound card. I did not mess with the manual part since I was only running a live version. I went and scrolled through the hardware list and everything was as it should be. That takes care of the motherboard, processor, lan. Now it is the decision about hard drives, fans, cases, and then I am ready to go spend money. I find I don't know much of anything about what is the best CPU fan to purchase. I feel like just tossing a dart and seeing where it lands. Guess I need to do a little more research. I do believe I have decided to do one parrallel hard drive and one S-ATA drive. If I can't get the Linux to recognize the S-ATA then I can simply use the other hard drive. I figure I will get somewhere between 80 and 100 GB for each so I should have plenty of room for any eventuality. :) Decisions, decisions......

Julia160 GB storing space in total will harbour a nice few Linux Distrro´s . . . . . looks like a good idea !Now that also Knoppix proved it´s compatebillity get the order in so you can start building next week. ( Don´t let them deliver at the neighbours like last time ! ):) Bruno

The order is placed. This should be a pretty sweet machine. Can't think of a thing left off. Just a little bit of RAM, a decent processor, and a few whistles and bells. It won't be here for a couple of weeks so I have time to much this one up a bit. :) :)

JuliaShow us a nice pic of the case will you ?? Will give us something to dream of !:) Bruno

JuliaI found the lm-sensors details for your intel 845 board, I´m parking them here for later reference:

I´ve been experimenting with my new motherboard from Intel (D845PEBT2) which indicates that it has the Standard Microsystems  Corp EMC6D10X chip for monitoring the power and fans.  While installing lm-sensors i discovered that the SMSC chip and the National Semi LM85 appear to be the same chip.  After comparing spec sheets i totally believe this to be true. One error that i have discovered is that the SMSC spec states that reg. 3e should return 5c but does not it returns 1 which is the vender ID for the NS chip.
This way by the time we want to get the temperatures in Gkrellm we have the details on the problems we will face. ( looks like we can solve/hack this one :) ):) Bruno

What do you think my new computer looks like? Do you have a magic crystal ball that tells you what I ordered? Does it have a penguin on it? Is it a plain old case? Does the case matter? :) Here it is. Do you think it looks pretty. I should have gotten it in purple. Don't know why I missed that color.chieftec.jpg

I think we might be able to do that real walk under the stars in a couple of weeks. Do you think a Radeon 9000 Pro AGP video card will help with 128MB DDR? Or the P4HT processor or the 1 GB DDR 333 RAM?Probably the most fun will be to figure out what to do with the two 80 GB hard drives. How to set them up. That is the question. I will have a very similar system to daughter's since I was able to sneak in and test on hers, however, I will not even consider a dual boot W system. I ought to be able to back up the critical portions to partitions on the opposite hard drive. I can see the fun this will be. :)

JuliaNice system . . . .you make us run to the store for an upgrade !! You never mentioned the CPU, how much Mhz ??:) Bruno

Posted

Oh the CPU is just a little old Intel 478 socket P4 2.8 GHz with a fancy little fan. :) It will be a little blue inside though with all those rounded cables. That should be fun to play with! I think I added a couple of extra case fans while I was at it.___________________________Dreaming of a New Computer :)

I would not be able to sleep till it is delivered . . . . . when will it come ?? How long do we have to wait for the final Mandrake 9.1 install ??:) Bruno

Posted

This is like doing a new install. You want it all right now!! It took me three days to decide on each little component. I have never done so much thinking about each little thing inside the computer. It was a good experiene though since I had not paid a lot of attention to the changes in cables. I don't know how confident I would have been on my decisions without a motherboard manual to look at and some kindly ears to bounce things off of. I must have consulted my husband. :) His only question was when does he get his "new" computer.

Posted

You did not send him out ¨in his dog house over the garage - also known as the 7th bedroom¨, again have you ??B) Bruno

Posted

No I sent him away. He has gone "running". Of course, he is always running with the women in the next state.

Posted

Oh, "running" that´s what you call it these days . . . . the times are sure changing I can´t keep up with the lingo ! :DB) Bruno

Come on, get with the lingo. VolksLauf, run, whatever you want to call it!

Hi Julia,Just got back on-line; know this answer is already old, but since you asked...it is a "super-computer". :o Maybe your husband is more "PC-literate", than he lets on... B) B) B)

I doubt it. He had to call me at work becasue he lost a toolbar out of his email program and could not figure out how to do anything without it. :D B)
