teacher Posted June 26, 2003 Author Posted June 26, 2003 Cool Case!I just ran the mini-CD on daughter's computer. I aborted when it wanted to know which drive it could repartition. It went through all the hardware checks up to that point. I guess that means the motherboard will work okay. Daughter did not appreciate the attempt to repartition her hard drive. Quote
Bruno Posted June 26, 2003 Posted June 26, 2003 JuliaWell I did kind of wonder if it was a live CD, but somewhere on page 3 it did say it ran from CD . . . short: situation not clear !Next time try the Knoppix . . . Bruno Quote
quint Posted June 26, 2003 Posted June 26, 2003 Julia,This site has a pretty comprehensive listing, that may be of some use to you:PC Hardware linksMy gosh, writing this from the kids' PC (Win98SE), can't wait to get back upstairs. Quote
Bruno Posted June 26, 2003 Posted June 26, 2003 Hey QuintWhat a site !! Bookmarked it right away.ThanksB) Bruno* tell me, the kids, why don´t they run Linux yet ?? Quote
quint Posted June 26, 2003 Posted June 26, 2003 Bruno quote: tell me, the kids, why don´t they run Linux yet ??The games they play are not Linux compatible. (Roller Coaster Tycoon, Backyard Baseball, etc.) And they are "Windows trained" in school; their mother (my ex-wife), would never let them "practice" on their home PC. However, have been thinking of surprising them, one day! Quote
Bruno Posted June 26, 2003 Posted June 26, 2003 JuliaHere is a quote from their site: · What are the minimum system requirements for MiniCD?MiniCD requires at least a 586 processor (minimum Mandrake requirement, since it is optimised/compiled for an i586 processor) to run. Unfortionately it will not work on that old 386 or 486 that is lying around. In addition, at least 32MB of RAM is recommended - since MiniCD runs from CD, it uses the memory as a file storage area, hence this requirement. Don´t know why yours does not run from CD :DB) Bruno Quote
teacher Posted June 26, 2003 Author Posted June 26, 2003 Maybe it would have run from CD but I paniced when it wanted to know which hard drive and was indicating one was FAT 32 and the other was NTFS or whatever THEY use these days. Quote
teacher Posted June 27, 2003 Author Posted June 27, 2003 Managed to sneak back into daughter's room. Posting from Slack on her computer. It went through with the motherboard without any problems, other than it did not like the sound. I know most do have problems with the sound but that can be set up in the configuration once loaded. It was so fast booting I could barely keep up with the script. It is hard to tell if there is a problem if it flies across the screen.Well that answers one question - Slack at least will boot with the Intel motherboard I am thinking of buying. Now if I just have time to try the Knoppix before she gets out of the hot tub. I might be able to figure that one out as well. Quote
quint Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 Hi Julia,I'm writing this from MiniCD...it's very nice, unmistakably Mandrake. Was hoping to get the screen that you did, but did not...what did I do wrong? All it did for me (3x), was to fly through the start-up verbilage, and then ask for a login and password. Then proceed to the desktop, after typing "startx". Maybe did you type in "setup"? Quote
teacher Posted June 27, 2003 Author Posted June 27, 2003 No. I don't know what happened. I know I had to change the bios settings about 10 times to get past what my brother put on there so he could access the computer to see what was wrong. It was already a dual windows boot and it was set up so you did not even see the startup. It was even set up to bypass a bunch of stuff. I had to wade around in there to get it to boot from disk and to even go through a normal bios routine. I'll look at it again tomorrow. At least I was able to run the Slack Live without any problems. If it can run that, it should work. Quote
Bruno Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 Practice Julia, practice on those lovely Live CD´s . . . . :DB) Bruno Quote
teacher Posted June 27, 2003 Author Posted June 27, 2003 That sounds just like my piano teacher when I was much younger than now. Then it was just "Practice, Julia, practice." Or was that from the clarinet lessons or the dance lessons or the swim lessons or the ....... I think my parents were ahead of the game. They were always sending me off to camp or some kind of lessons. I wonder if they just wanted me out of the house? I don't remember taking too many things apart and putting them back together. Quote

I know he has never done that in his life! And he wonders why he uses the oldest computers. He might buy me jewelry and nice things, but a computer? He was typing on a manual typewriter when I met him. Took me a year to break him of laying on the keys! I guess there is a one-geek limit in this house! Quote

Maybe I should read the whole thread to see what has been said about me while I was slaving away at the spa making folks happy! The things I do to justify buying any computer I want. I still am tempted to go with the S-ATA hard drives. I could do one drive that way and one an old fashioned kind. That way I can use which ever one works for Linux.Heck, I think I am getting two 80 GB hard drives. I need room to play. I mean, I have a 30 and a 20 now. Shouldn't I dream big? Quint, I am not even going to ask how long it took you to design the cross roads. You just knew what kind of person I am and wanted to put something in here representing that! Do you think I am annoyed. I am just having fun. I wanted to have room to do multiple Linux distros. I am just still trying to master everything I can in Drake first. I mean, what's another distro? If I was not having CPU problems now I would probably have installed something else already. Quote

teacher Posted June 28, 2003 Author Posted June 28, 2003 You think you are safe at the keyboard? Are you sure? Hubby sits at a keyboard too sometimes. He has learned how to email and how to play solitaire as well as look up marathons to run, but he just might figure out about forums one of these days. Maybe that's why he asked "Who's Bruno?" Quote
