hi everybody.i am having problems with sound in gnome.although i can play music and media files of all kinds and the sound does work i cant hear anything when i click on system notification.also i lost the sound in online java games.it did work before i started playing around with gstreamer.i have both sink default and stream default set to osss which i believe is a default setting.at least i had it configured this way before when the sound worked.then i changed it to alsa and arts.i did this because while i enjoy system notification sounds and online games sounds it was only one thing at atime.so i had to turn the system sounds off to hear the game sounds.i :D i would appreciate your help since i am quite a newcomer to linux B)

Start --> Whereever --> Gnome Control Center --> Advanced Applications --> Multimedia System Selector lets you choose between OSS and ALSA.The regular tab gives you some other basic options. Those are the main differences between the Gnome and KDE. B)

Take Bruno's script and copy it from his post. Then open your current script:vi soundchk.shDelete everything that is there.Paste the script from Bruno's post.Press Escape key followed by two capital Z keys. Then type chmod 755 soundchk.shThen type ./soundchk.shYou should be in business then.

oh boy,now i know what i should do but dont know how o:) i mean i open vi and then i delete everything from there but how do i paste??i tried "p" but it pastes only one line rather then the whole script.and only before i press "i" for wiriting mode.need some more help here i am afraid :whistling: but thanks for the hint Teacher :)

To paste you can either click your scroll button on your mouse if you have one, or you can go to the edit (doing this from memory) drop down toolbar and go to paste or you can try Control V to paste. This assumes you have copied the text from the file to begin with so you have it to paste. :whistling:

Are you working from a Command Line rather than using a graphic interface? Do you have KDE open and running when you are doing this? Or Gnome? I just opened a blank document and tyed some text. Then I went to the "Konsole" and then typed "vi something". That opened a blank document named something. I then went up to the toolbar across the top and had the headings "Session Edit View Bookmarks Settings Help". I clicked on Edit with my mouse and then went down to the "Paste" command which was the second item down. That enabled me to paste what I had just typed in a blank document in another program.

i have Gnome open.i cant open a new document and paste something out there cuz when i try to open it i get an error saying cant display the file.i can do it in open office but then i dont think i would be able to paste it that way.the bottom line is i dont know how to paste something in vi

So you are saying that you can not copy from the web to do the script? Do you know how to copy in your browser? I think it sounds like your problem is in the copy step, not the paste step, am I correct?

i know how to both copy and paste.the problem here is that when i open console and then open vi it doesnt work like in the browser or the console itself.i press the scroll wheel or right mouse button and nothing happens.this is my problem.

apparently i am not making myself clear.this is what i do,step by step.i open the terminal and write:vi soundchk.shthen after i get the output i press i to go to command mode.how do i delete everything from there and then paste something.maybe my terminal is out of order cuz when i press right button the text gets selected up to the point where the prompt line is.scroll wheel does nothing.there is no menu at the top of the terminal so i can choose paste from there.maybe it would work if i opened in kwrite?there it is very easy to delete and paste.i hope you know what i mean now :) :)

GauchoJust delete the present file in your /home . . and make a new ( empty ) one with:vi soundchk.shThen copy the text . . and after pressing i . . . you push on the mouse wheel to paste the text ;)Then you save the new file ( Esc ZZ ) . . . and the job is done :):) Bruno

i have 6 different .sondchk.sh files starting from .sondchk.sh.swk going thru the corresponding alphabet letters to .sondchk.sh.swp . when i try to open any of it it says:Couldn't display "/home/guest/.soundchk.sh.swk".i can open it with some othet program but dont really know with which one.why cant i do it in kwrite by running in the terminal :kwrite soundchk.shand there deleting everything what is there and pasting your script?

Delete all previous versions . . no matter what extension . . . then just do it in kwrite:kwrite soundchk.shBut you have to delete ALL the others first :):offtopic: BrunoPS: We will just have to do some more training on Vi before we start really using it :)

about vi,i really dont understand anything anymore :) .i am pretty sure that when you are in the insert mode pasting by means of scroll wheel or ctrl+v doesnt work.i have checked it 10 times already.when you are in the command mode only "p" works but it pastes only one line not the whole script.i checked some vi tutorials and i didnt find anything :hmm . anyways, which files should i delete?i dont have .soundchk.sh only the ones like suundchk.sh.swk/l/m/n/o/p.

Yes. After you delete them all then copy from Bruno's post and then open KWrite and save the script there. We will use that to save it.
