raymac46 Posted October 22 Posted October 22 As per Erik's suggestion I've been experimenting with Ventoy. I have a 32GB thumbdrive so I installed Ventoy and then 4-5 ISOs of interest - Debian, Knoppix, GParted, Arch Linux, Linux Mint. They all seem to boot OK. 4 Quote
wa4chq Posted October 22 Posted October 22 Hey Raymac....I tried that as well a while back. Seemed to work OK. I'm not using thumb-drives much anymore other than to transfer data or loaded with music and used in my car or boat. Speaking of Erik.....miss the dude. RIP bro. 1 Quote

Makes playing just so easy. Copy and image to Ventoy and play away, simples. Quote

securitybreach Posted October 23 Posted October 23 Well, while we're throwing out suggestions, how about Linux from Scratch 2 Quote

K....I haven't messed with DSL in years, but they've expanded and update it. I may even check it out again. Funny about Knoppix....they were the 'Swiss Army Knife' of Linux distros back in the day. 1 1 Quote

securitybreach Posted October 23 Posted October 23 Gentoo is fine as long as you do not mind waiting hours to install an application.... 1 1 Quote
wa4chq Posted October 23 Posted October 23 (edited) I burned the updated version of DSL to a CD and it's working fine...no issues finding wifi. I'd forgotten how S L O W booting from a CD was! Geeze....luckily, you can burn DSL to a thumb-drive or so the creator says. I'll have to give it a try. First impression on the new DSL.....the stock wallpaper sucks! I don't remember what the original was, but it wasn't little cartoon mice climbing around a series of gears! They could do better than that for the Live Distro. I think it says you can set up persistence....so if I were to put it on a thumb-drive w/ persistence, the cartoon mice will be history and something like Betty Page will be the replacement. UPDATE: The updated version of DSL has in it's application file a DSL Bootable USB Maker....so I'm in the processes of doing it. You can select whether you want to use the iso from the disk or from their website....which is their suggestion...so I chose that..... Edited October 23 by wa4chq 3 Quote

raymac46 Posted October 23 Author Posted October 23 The new DSL seems much different from the 50MB one I remember. It's basically a respin of antiX, so I would expect the wifi to work. I don't have a need for 32bit distros anymore, though. 1 Quote
raymac46 Posted October 23 Author Posted October 23 (edited) So far I only put stuff on my Ventoy USB that I might be interested in installing, or have already installed. While I do have a really old junker Netbook that has only 2 GB of RAM, it is still a 64 bit CPU. Everything else I have has at least 8GB of RAM. And if I simply wanted to install Linux on any desktop or laptop, I think I'd just burn the ISO onto a single use USB stick. Ventoy looks good to distro hop and decide what I would want to install. Also looks great as a rescue thumbdrive. Edited October 23 by raymac46 2 Quote

Yeah, it is different....put it on the thumb-drive....booted....looked at it and that's as far as I'm going. I don't use Live Distros anymore. I might test drive something using VB but I hardly even do that. Have fun with your project....that's what it's all about! 1 Quote

At one point, it was based on slackware. 1 Quote
securitybreach Posted October 23 Posted October 23 Actually that wasnt the one I was thinking of: Quote DSL was originally based on Model-K, a 22 MB stripped-down version of Knoppix, but soon after was based on Knoppix proper, allowing much easier remastering and improvements. The distribution is now based on Debian and antiX. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damn_Small_Linux 1 Quote
sunrat Posted October 23 Posted October 23 Dr. Parted Live is an excellent free backup/rescue live system, maybe as good as PartedMagic but free. Works well from Ventoy. https://dr-parted-live.sourceforge.io/ 1 2 Quote
raymac46 Posted October 23 Author Posted October 23 I think Slax was a lightweight live distro based on Slackware. I tried it a few years ago but could never get the wifi to work with it. 1 1 Quote

I have MX as a permanent addition as I run it on my traveling Tough Book so am pretty familiar with its workings. Way back I played around with Knoppix and DSL and also KANOTIX which I was pretty fond of. Welcome to Kanotix! Never heard of Dr. Parted Live though, I'll have to have a looksee. 14 hours ago, raymac46 said: And if I simply wanted to install Linux on any desktop or laptop, I think I'd just burn the ISO onto a single use USB stick. Well you can, Quote Directly boot from ISO/WIM/IMG/VHD(x)/EFI files, no extraction needed So am puzzled as to why you would bother with burning to a single usb stick. Surely a simple copy to Ventoy would be easier and quicker. That is what I do anyway and that is how I installed Arch. 1 Quote
securitybreach Posted October 24 Posted October 24 Well I grabbed Dr. Parted Live as it also included clonezilla. I figured I may as well have some other utilities included since I already use Clonezilla. 1 Quote
