Two new forums have been suggested, and I thought this might be a good way for Scot to find out what degree of interest exists among our members. In your comments, feel free to include what sort of content you'd expect or like to see in such a forum.

ok...I have a old MAC power PC running MAC OS 8, and I don't know alot about MAC's or OS 8 for that matter (though I floundered through getting it connected to my network and onto the internet). But I think it would be a great topic to add. I know there have to be members that have MAC's that could "share the wealth" as far as MAC info goes. Maybe a hardware , software, and MAC OS subtopics.Maybe an "other" unix OS subtopic for like FreeBSD too :whistling:

I didn't know the MACs ever had problems. Isn't the OS is a Unix derivitive? They come with all the best applications, can do anything better, and you can't tinker with the insides. B) What is there to talk about. :P Just kidding. <_< I might even buy one someday when I have that much money to spend. :whistling:

I'm all for it. I've got a Win98 / SuSE system and an iMac. I'm probably going to get an Apple iBook for my wife for Christmas. Some of those who say they have no interest in a Mac might change their minds if they read more about them, or had a place to ask questions. I know I had a lot of misconceptions before I switched.

If you do, your wife will love it!

I agree 100%, many people have a lot of misconceptions about the hardware and OS.

I think for a forum like this we need the Mac forum - I don't thing singling out any OS should be done, suprises someone didn't say anything about this before. I'm not a Mac person - never messed with them much, but hear great things about the OS X.

The simple reason is that when this forum started, Scot meant it mainly to mirror the content of the newsletter, with emphasis on Windows, networking and security and software. Then the Linux forum was tried out, mostly as a shot in the dark. Scot has said that while he didn't detect that many Linux users reading the newsletter, once ATL was up and running, and especially after Bruno, Peachy and Teacher got involved, the reaction to it pleasantly surprised us all. So now a little more time has passed, more members with broader interests...as I said, the idea for these other forums has been floated, and as a first step, we wanted to gauge interest in them.SFNL is a living community, and as such, will no doubt evolve and grow even more in the future. I hope you all stick around to see it mature. :whistling:

At this point, i think we really NEED a mac forum. We have grown so much to cover such a broad range of computing topics that its strange we don't have a mac forum.I also think that it would attract many new members who are interested in Macs.I say go for it! The sooner the better :whistling:

I like Mac's where they are justified. Mac, historically and currently, just does some things better than anyone else.Unfortunately I find that the cost factor makes them out of the question for many users. Personally I am doing more work with not-for-profit agencies instead of for-profit corporations. Mac's are normally too expensive for the market. For that reason I am focusing on Linux as a long term solution. But, I was still seriously considering an iBook for my next notebook. Probably won't go that way now, but, 6 months ago it was a real option.Having said that, I think that adding a Mac forum would be worthwhile. The key will be a strong moderator to kick start the process.

I'd enjoy a Mac forum! I have done some minor work on Macs but not since OS X.Don't own one myself though ... yet.  :P
There's always Basilisk for the cheapos. I've played around with it and it's a fairly good emulator. I even managed to Install IE4 for Mac and WordPerfect 3 for Mac (still a free download from Corel's ftp server.) BTW, SuSE 8.2 and 9 has Basilisk as one of its many packages. The only thing you need to get started is a Macintosh ROM in binary file format. But you need to get a hold of a real Mac to download its ROM to a file.

Sorry Fran... iTunes only runs on 9 or higher, and that emulator can only go up to 8.x, that is if you have the ROM and a version of the OS.But what the heck if you want iTunes, you can download it for Windows: http://www.apple.com/itunes/

I would read occasionally, hoping to learn a bit more about Mac OS's. Never owned one, no particular reason to want one. Just wondering how the 'other half' lives, so to speak. Hooked on Windows, very likely to migrate to Linux for the desktop as Microsoft institutes 'the rapture'- shrinking the Win desktop back into a dumb terminal, dot net, DRM, only desktop graphic available a photo of Darth Vader, "We own you" (your computer, your software, your personal files, etc.) The collective wants to assimilate me. I think I will run away and join the French Foreign Legion ;)

I say go for it. And put Arena in charge! I like Macs. I have done work on them at various times. I have to admire a computer that can be thrown across a room and only have damage to the case but everything else working great. Most of my work on them has been setting up adaptive devices and adding/removing software where someone has tried to change settings at my sister's school. Since I don't own a Mac, I imagine I will only lurk and drool.

My sister's school is only for the severely disabled (less than 50 IQ). One of her students had a temper tantrum and threw it across the room. I got called in to see if it was fixable. All I had to do was take a hammer to the frame so the cover would go back on, reconnect all the adaptive devices, and everything worked fine. I was shocked to see that it did not trash the hard drive or do any damage to the actual hardware. When I left the computer was on the floor instead of a desk and back to where the student would only notice the monitor and adaptive devices.
