Owyn
Hi all:Could you run "glxgears -info" on your test sytems from the livecd (ie. not hd install unless you have fixed it as previously described). Need to know the info plus the first 5 or so test results. Also need to know if the results are consistent with any prior tests you have done on other distros. If you don't have prior results then Knoppix 3.3 would be the best comparator.Tx all in advance.

Owyn
Tx Bruno/Quint/AdamQuint, The only big difference between the HD and CD test should be the stability of the results. The problems that have been reported are either gears not visible or slow compared to other distros.I am digging back into the old glxgears thread to pull out some comparative results. Bruno
Hi OwynHere is a little report about my Pc-total-los today . . . . I thought let's do the install as you discribed a few posts back, with the “mv etc etc.old†and ending with the cp of fstab . . . It worked ! First time ! But:1) When adding the user bruno, bruno had no sound, demo and root had, but I had none . . . . I solved this problem:# chown bruno /dev/sound/dspBecause I saw that the owner of dsp was “demoâ€2) Running glxgears -info gave me this message: Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual It did give me that same message on the previous install too, and that was also the reason why I tried the install as you and Texstar recommended.3) I ran the updates . . . . did them all . . . . and it did something funny to my system: all executables were gone . . . . I could not give any command anymore, rebooted and was left at the prompt logged in as root, and even the startx command was not known anymore . . . LOL so there I did the install again . . . . smooth as a baby, and really clever with the /etc and /etc.old . . .changed the root password again and made the new user with my own password . . . . but am not updating anymore. :o4) I added Epiphany ( Galeon ) from the “mainâ€-source . . . so much nicer then the other browsers . . . ;)5) I had FUN !! Correct?1) When adding the user bruno, bruno had no sound, demo and root had, but I had none . . . . Bruno
Good. I read that as the instructions work to get the HD install working as well as the livecd. Not good enough but demo and root work the same from CD and HD. Correct? Yep . . . your addition for fstab is needed though !Better solution is probably to chown root and chmod 555 You´re right ! Was too quick with my solution, but needed sound badly !Failing on HD. Working on CD. Correct? Yes, on my first install and the install following the guidelines.Found note from Texstar to NOT install kde updates. Too late . . . . but let it be a warning to others ! So installing additional packages worked but the updates caused problems. Correct? Correct ! From the "main" source that is . . . . I vaguely remember reading something about one source not working ( and now stay away from the update source as well )Love this testing ! Owyn
Tx Bruno:Recapping for myself and others:1)The modified install procedure I posted works. (almost)PS: I am the only one to blame for errors in the kluge. Tex had nothing to do with it. The hd-install procedures also came from Jaco upstream in mklivecd. He was also the one who discovered that etc was being copied from the wrong source. Allready fixed in CVS for next release.2)The alsa devices are being created with the wrong ownership and permissions.3)Definitely problems if KDE updates are applied. Trashes hd install.4)Software update infrastructure does work, but, still problems with contribs. contribs problems need to be fixed by Mandrake and are outside of Tex's control.5)Unusual problem on your system with glxgears from HD. Runs same from HD/CD for Quint and myself.???Does the problem occur from root/demo or just from bruno.
Bruno
Hi Oqyn PS: I am the only one to blame for errors in the kluge. Please Owyn, we have no wish to look for who´s to blame . . it´s a beta/RC . . . NO bugs means NO fun !2, 3, 4 = 100% correct.5 = Yes the same results for root and demo . . . . on the old install and on the 2 new ones ( one trashed by updates and one still running ) This is why I tried the new install procedure in the first place, because for the rest the old install was running fine . . . . . I saw that Quint had no problems running it from HD so I thought: let´s go for it ! Bruno

Owyn
Compared /dev/sound/* on Mdk92 and PCLos.On my desktop system ls -la /dev/sound showed Owner=owyn Group=audio Perm=crwBasically the same as PCLos: Owner=demo Group=audio Perm=crwPrevious "fix" should be:$ su# cd /dev/sound# chmod 666 *Or add new user to Audio group. eg.$ su# addgroup owyn audioNeed to test new user on Mdk92 to see if "problem" of no audio for additional user also occurs on Mdk92.......Later. Confirmed same problem occurs in Mdk92. Recommended solution is to add new user to audio group.

Owyn
Tx. It should be unless you had run draksound on the hd install.Strange. Something in hwdetect (maybe upstream at Mandrake). Selection of OSS or Alsa seems to be arbritary.
Bruno
Noticed an a few Mandrake installs during the years that it does not always pick the best driver for Alsa and does set up Oss in that case . . . . changing the driver would set up Alsa support in those cases . . . . So I think this is typically Mandrake. Bruno
