beeTee
I'll be installing SUSE 9.0 this evening, well afternoon for those of you in the states. Gonna start backing up windows and data right now, and when my daughter finally gets in bed, I'll be right on it.One of the improvements (according to SUSE) is that they built channel bundling into kinternet, so I will be able go "2-channel" at the touch of a button. I was never able to make this work in 8.2, which is one of the reasons I wasn't jumping up and down getting SUSE back on my system.just have to review the Linux tips a bit for partition advice. thanks Bruno!! 'till then
teacher
Good luck! Let us know when the install party will start! We will keep our fingers crossed all goes well.

beeTee
Just brewed a fresh pot, and have the Weiß bier cooled for when I'm done!!! I save the Tips forum before I start. Those darn partition decisions always freak me out a little. I'm still such a beginner in so many ways!!
teacher
We are rooting for you. Don't sweat the partitions. Just have a good plan of what you are going to do before you start and a list of what is on each partition! <says the voice of been there, goofed that one up before > I know you can get it right the first time. Just remember that beer is for after the install!
beeTee
OH mannnn. Total bummer. My freind with the SUSE package canceled on me. So here I'm sitting with 3 cups of coffee in me at 9:30 PM, and no new toys to play with. Guess I'll just hang out in the Water Cooler, and check out some news to see what's going on in the world. Maybe I can find some windows questions to post. bummer
Bruno
Oooooh . . We will have to put off the party then . . Well lucky you got the Weiß bier . . . . . you can drown your sorrow . . . . . Bruno

You know what a nature freak she is. OK...got the pretty green package in my greedy little hands, looks like it will be around 3:00PM eastern time. Peachy
I guess you didn't feel like doing the FTP install? Wouldn't blame you, the one mirror I used froze up and the others hadn't been updated yet. Hopefully tonight.

beeTee
OK. can anybody tell me how to "leave messages on server" in KMail. I look all over the place and just didn't see it. I just deleted 100 some odd messages of my mail server that I leave there to access from work. So far I'm quite happy with 9.0. the big plus is the dual isdn "channel bundling" built in to kinternet!! got the system updated with YOU. no problems. The default software install is quite limited, so I got a chance to select a bunch of "things" using Yast2 interface. again, no apparent problems.Galeon and Mozilla 1.4 seem pretty slow. I am using Konqueror at the moment, and it loaded these pages much faster than the previous 2. Probably get Firebird on here next time, since it seems to smoke every other browser I've tried, and I don't require anything fancy. also, the default text size for Galeon and Mozilla are quite small and unattractive. Just didn't have the time or patience (1:15 AM here)to play with it yet. What is the program that puts the "Moon Phase" applet on the task bar?? I really like that little ditty!!!Thanks in adavance!!Edit: I just tried out mozilla again, and it seems faster for some reason. I guess I better leave my evaluation phase to when I can keep my eyes open!!!!!
BarryB
Hey Bee Tee Congrats..on Kmail...if you click into Configure Kmail >>>Network>>> and Modify Account...uncheck delete mail from server after fetching..That should leave your mail on the serverAlso if you right click on TB you'll see add<<<then Applet>>>( I don't have Moon Phase loaded) or Add>>> Program and you can add from there...And like Julia said drag and drop works too
teacher
If you want to leave your messages on the server then switch to Evolution or Thunderbird. I don't believe KMail has that option. I know in Drake I can just drag programs from the start menu to the task bar. Have you tried that? Get some sleep though and come back when you are fresh! beeTee
Hey...you doing real good for early am... my mind is jello by 2300..11:00 pm Yeah, I'm shutting down now. Gotta get "the kid" off to kindergarten pretty early!! :whistling:just one last check to see if my windows will still log in.also, on my install, I had a problem with Grub installing. got an error message 15 saying it wouldn't install, so when it restarted, I booted off the install disk 1, and when it went into options, I chose the "fix it" option (don't remember the name) and went right to the exact problem (it gives options of "auto fix", "kinda know the problem-fix" or "know the exact problem-fix" (I'll report more next time). anyways, three clicks later, Grub was in there, and it booted in. Great recovery option. Anyone got a good mouse selection for a 5-button mouse? standard wheel mouse with two buttons on the side?I still read 2300 as "twenty-three hundred"
BarryB
Roger That on the 2300 ! Still use it...get some looks every now and then...
beeTee
windows works!! however, when I shut down SUSE, it got to reached run level 0, and just sat there for like 5 minutes before I hit the power switch!! now to log back into SUSE see what happened, if anything. I swear, I'll go to bed any minute now!!
beeTee
back in SUSE, now I know what I forgot to ask before!!!! probably important too:I get a notification (verbose mode) that "The data on your hard drive is turned off. This may really slow down the fsck process."another right before loading the GUI is "skipped features boot.sched" any Idea's.also, when I did my partitioning, I made everything a logical drive. is that OK?? BarryB
I didn't have the oddities with the DMA ( I'm guessing here) you had...Strange on switchover..I don't have that problem in my main box...but do w/ a 850AMD HP System...I have'nt figured out the answer yet my self ( AMD system has Mepis and Drake..but did the same thing w/ WinXP and suse..or anything else for that matter
jar92380
I got a question about suse.I want to try it out but as many of you know I am having issues with my nic card at the present moment. Is there any place that i can go to download the distro other than the ftp or live version of it or without having to purchase it right now (being a broke college kid)? ThanksJ
Bruno
Hi JarOther then FTP install, SuSE is not available for download ( the only distro that does not ) . . . . . but you can download a Live-Evaluation version . . . have a look here: Live CD's ( disto's that run from CD ) Bruno
beeTee
on my last shutdown lastnight, It stopped again after all disks were unmounted, run level 0. waited about 5 minutes. The power button was inactivated (for lack of better words). so I rebooted into windows, then shut down from there. I'm thinking about doing the repair thing again, and seeing what it says about my "data on my hard drive" being turned off.
