Hedon James Posted May 7 Posted May 7 60MB RAM usage at idle? WOW!!! When I got fed up with the HOG nature of the Ubuntu Unity desktop, I crafted my own from various parts & pieces that I called Mimetic, because I had pre-configured layouts that resembled Unity, Gnome2, OSX, and Windows available for selection by user at boot. It was basically LXDE, with a choice of Fluxbox, PekWM, or OpenBox window managers, that could be switched "on the fly". I stole a LOT of ideas from AntiX and a (now defunct?) distro called LXLE. Using the LXDE desktop with Fluxbox, on a Lubuntu base, I was able to reduce my 500MB+ RAM usage of the Unity HOG desktop, down to 120-130MB at idle. It was a sweet config, and quite snappy. I miss the LXDE desktop. Not all paths forward are "progress", IMO. LOL! 2 Quote

I know we are going backwards in a lot of areas. 18 hours ago, Hedon James said: Using the LXDE desktop with Fluxbox, on a Lubuntu base, I was able to reduce my 500MB+ RAM usage of the Unity HOG desktop, down to 120-130MB at idle Impressive. raymac46 Posted Tuesday at 02:08 PM Posted Tuesday at 02:08 PM The smallest RAM I have ever used for Linux was (wait for it) 80MB. That was on a Fujitsu Lifebook 735DX which had no CD-ROM or modem. It did have a PCMCIA slot so I plugged in an Ethernet card. I was able to install Deli Linux on floppies and then download the rest of the packages to get a GUI. It was a totally useless machine even in 2008 but as a point of principle interesting enough. The Pentium 133 MMX was way too slow for wifi. 1 1 Quote
