wa4chq Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 Morning all.....I'll sum up my opinion of Plex media server in three words..... it sucks.  I'm heading back to tried and true, MOC/MOCP. It just works.   Quote
securitybreach Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 Well I guess it depends on what you use it for. I use plex to stream my movie collection to my tv using a chromecast and it works great. I do not pay for the other services that it uses. Emby and jellyfin are alternatives to plex, Emby being open source. 1 Quote

For that, I'm sure it's fine. But setting up my MP3's, playlists, etc etc it's a PITA. I tried Emby.....and a few others but in the end, all I'm using it for is my MP3 collection. MOC/MOCP is it for me. Hedon James Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 Can't comment on Plex, as I've never used it. And I was aware of Emby (Media Brower...MB...."emby") and Jellyfin, but never used. I use KODI for movies, but that's only because I used to use some of the channels/plugins. I hardly use them anymore, so might start considering a lighter-weight, less-featured alternative. In the past, I've used Serviio. Lightweight and works like a champ. Does exactly what you describe, but not exactly sure what you don't like about Plex. I'll just mention Serviio and let you decide if it worth checking out. FWIW...  Another option MIGHT be Cantata music player. Cantata is the front end GUI that uses "music player daemon" MPD as the backend/server. Just point Cantata to the location of your music collection (network? NAS?) and Cantata plays it for you! 1 Quote
wa4chq Posted May 20, 2024 Author Posted May 20, 2024 I haven't tried Cantata music player....I have used mpd. It worked OK but I found it overly complicated to configuring it... so l went back to MOC/MOCP. But I will I'll take a look at Cantata.... tnx Quote
