Hello,

I thought it was originally introduced in Windows 8.1 as place to store models for 3-D printing:

• Gear, Gavin.  3D Printing Support in Windows 8.1 Explained.   Windows Blogs.  Microsoft Corp.  Published 23 August 2013.

At the time Windows 8.1 came out, I was living in San Diego and worked about 10-15 minutes from the local Microsoft Store location.  I remember going in and watching the 3-D printing demos that they ran inside the store.
