Good morning.  I'm trying to give Alpine linux a try in virtual box but I am not connecting to internet.  I also had it installed on a thumb drive and was able to run through "setup-alpine" but like with VB, I still can't get past the apk setup....no internet connection.  With other images that aren't so bare-boned, I have an internet connection after booting.  I'm not having any luck with YouTube or Google.  Everything I've found doesn't address my problem.  Anyway, any suggestions?  Thanks

I was check the network settings for the vm first as that sounds like the issue.

Then if it is enabled, see what lscpi shows for a network adapter.

Hey SB...I'm sure the settings for network are OK since I am able to run other images and access the internet.  I will look into "lscpi".  Thanks.

Well I only mention it as each vm has its own hardware emulated. I usually use a bridge connection on most of mine.

Dude, that was the ticket.  I enabled the bridge connection and it's smokin'.  The only thing that sucks is no ranger.....using mc until I find something better.

Thanks man.

OK....Alpine is up and running in VB.  In a previous post, I said I couldn't install ranger and installed mc instead.  It turns out ranger is available...I forgot to un-hash links in the apk repositories.  So 'apk add ranger' now installs ranger.  When running "setup-desktop", I chose MATE just to see what would happen.  I may see if i3 is available.  Anyway, now to power off and see if everything up to this point is saved.

Happy 2024 everybody.

Here is a pretty good reference on VBox Internet. I usually use NAT (the default is Intel I think) and don't have problems. I have never tried Alpine in a VM though.

Happy New Year raymac.....  SB uses bridge...so I gave that a try and it works great here.  After several tries messing with VB and with the Alpine setup, I think it's all working nicely.

OK...just powered off...now to start it back up....fingers crossed....

It works!  Everything was saved.....cool.  I may have to try Alpine using a RaspberryPi.....but not now.

And thanks for the link.

I am not totally sure on the difference between Bridge and NAT. I *think* that NAT is a virtual emulation of a network interface (machine thinks it's connected via a wired interface,) and Bridge just passes everything through to the hardware interface on the Host.

Most of the time everything works with the defaults for me so I never worry about it. I had a look at Alpine Linux and it's radically different from anything I have ever used.

That is sort of correct

Quote
  • Host-only only permits network operations with the Host OS.
  • NAT mode will mask all network activity as if it came from your Host OS, although the VM can access external resources.
  • Bridged mode replicates another node on the physical network and your VM will receive it's own IP address if DHCP is enabled in the network.
