Portable Firefox 1.0 Release Candidate 2 (USB Drive-Friendly)- with extensions support!30,000 downloads and counting...Firefox supports running from removable drives with minimal reconfiguration. To make life even easier, I've repackaged Firefox as a complete, removable drive-friendly browser. This grew out of a mozillaZine forum topic back in June of 2004. Any comments or questions can be directed there. If you don't get an answer there, you can also contact me. (Note: Portable Thunderbird is also available.)http://johnhaller.com/jh/mozilla/portable_firefox/

Let's see if this one works. I played around with this months ago and couldn't get it to work. I thought it would be handy if I go to someone's house to do a repair. I feel safer running FF than IE.Progress report:1. I downloaded the zip program (6.15 Mb) to my desktop2. Cleared off one of my 64 meg thumb drives3. Dragged the zipped file to the USB drive and selected extract here4. It unzipped into 1 large directory called firefox with all the subdirectories and folders5. I explored firefox and found the file "PortableFirefox.exe" and clicked on it6. It worked. The browser launched.

Portable Firefox is pretty darned neat! I successfully set it up on my 128M PNY USB 2.0 flash drive. The only glitch so far- when I first tried to post to this thread, I got a BSOD. After rebooting, all appears to work OK. I have also downloaded and installed one extension so far, Adblock. Haven't verified if it got installed right yet. I will play with this thing a bit on some of my different machines and see how it holds up. BTW it was trivially easy to replace the bookmarks.htm that comes with the install with a current copy from my 'real' Firefox browser. So far, so good. I like the idea. Let's see how it holds up as I travel around with it and try it on various friends' machines. :thumbsup:P.S. No, I'm not doing anything with encryption yet. This flash drive has everything out in plain sight.

SWEET!! I love it. I just tested it briefly before I started on my HUGE honeydoo list today. This'll come in handy!!Is there one for Thunderbird??? ;) :w00t:

Is there one for Thunderbird?
Sure is. ;) I have a question. Someone asked me if you can put it on a flash memory card and run it from a cardreader. Any brave souls with the time to waste to see if it works?

It works the same way so it should work. :D I use the disks all the time as backup devices.

I'm using both Portable Firefox and Thunderbird right now at work. I LOVE IT!!!I can have all my junk here on the Cruzer. My only mistake was not going big enough on the Cruzer. I got a 256 MB and I could probably fit all my email on it with about 30-40 MB to spare. But come to think of it, that might really cause the Cruzer to run slow on that program. Hmmm...

This will rock when I get my 1Gb Jumpdrive in the mail soon. :D I usually use Remote desktop to access my email, but just carrying it around with me sounds much better! :w00t:

tbird, you need two drives if you're getting squeezed out: one for the browser and the other for the mail.GolfProRM, I'm extremely green with envy! A 1 gig jump drive. I wonder if I am really, really, really good will Santa put one of those in my stocking? :">

Dell had one on sale the other day for $60 with a $20 rebate, so I couldn't pass it up... It's not a "secure" one, but I can't see why I'd bother to even use the security software. I'm excited as well... now I can turn off my ftp server from the outside world and secure my network a bit more... ;)

If I get the browser set up the way I want on a jumpdrive, I may use that on all my computers. It sure beats trying to figure out on which partion of which computer I added a bookmark that I want. :'(

This is great, I ran it off of my friends thumb drive in the lab here (they don't have firefox...just Navigator 4.x YIKES!)Portablefirefox.exe (I think that's the name of it...) didn't work, but I was able to get it working just using firefox.exeOtherwise, it ran great!:w00tx100:Neil

Works great! I am leaving IE behind for good. Firefox is the only way to go right now. These USB tokens are great for so many things.
