Peachy
Uhhh... I thihnk I am missing something here..... The Canadian Federal Election is on June 28. Polls close at 8:00pm. Just a coincidence. BTW, epp_b, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the media black out is unconstitutional so that while voters in British Columbia have 3 hours left to vote, they can start learning the results of the polls in Ontario and Quebec. Heck, 4 1/2 hours if they start watching the Newfoundland and Labrador results. <_<In our parliamentary system of government we have a maximum of 40 days for election campaigning. This year it was only 36. So while you stateside have already begun your campaigns back in the beginning of the year, we could see a new government on Monday. Jeber
Yeah, the Canadian government asked us not to allow posting during that period so we wouldn't spill the beans as to the winner of the election. Don't ask...we won't tell.

The amount of time spent in the States might have made sense even to the end of the 19th Centruy. But in this Day & Age of instantaneous communication...A year of campaigning is Overkill, in the Extreme. And contributes greatly to turning many people off to the entire electoral system
Arena2045
A simple notice about downtime turns into a political discussion ... not what I had in mind.
epp_b
Mods (specifically, Arena2045): By no means am I attempting to undermine your authority. All I wanted to say is that I just meant it to be a joke and that there are obviously more Americans than Canadians in these forums (I didn't mean to make any negative connotations or implications about the scheduled downtime. Sorry for any trouble I may have caused)And, yes, Peachy, I know the blackout policy has been changed. Again, it was a joke
Peachy
Actually, I thought the whole thread was hilarious! I figured you would know the blackout policy had changed; this being for the benefit of our American Cousins!
Guest Paracelsus
No need for apologies, epp_b...I fomented the situation as well.
epp_b
Well, since the conversation has been kept going anyway... In our parliamentary system of government we have a maximum of 40 days for election campaigning. This year it was only 36. So while you stateside have already begun your campaigns back in the beginning of the year, we could see a new government on Monday.Hey, Peachy...I know a lot of folks who would LOVE to see the US adopt an campaign/election system more in the Canadian Mode. And contributes greatly to turning many people off to the entire electoral system While I agree about the amount of time allowed for campaigning, I think that Canada needs to adopt a "set election date" policy as the U.S. has. No more calling elections "when the time is good". Although, this year, Paul Martin shot himself in the foot by calling an election now.
