jeffw_00 Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Hi - I have a long-running, i5 machine running WinXP SP3, apparently free of any issues. I recently upgraded from Office 2003 to Office 2010, and when I start Excel 2010 (but not any of the other office programs), it often takes 7-10 seconds to load. Details: This happens when I open by clicking on a file (either .xls or xlsx). The app starts up right away, but the worksheet area stays grey, and it sits for 7-10 sec, and then the worksheet displays. (Also happens if I just start up Excel from the Icon) If I exit Excel, but then open another spreadsheet within a few minutes, the problem does NOT recur. I didn't install any Add-ins, and I don't think I have any loaded. Any thoughts on how to debug very appreciated as always. THANKS! /j Quote

Guest LilBambi Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Something to think about. Do you run Norton Internet Security? Whillie wrote:Everytime I open an excel or word file it take it too long to open. Sometimes the file give a message of "Not Responding" but when I try to wait for the the file to open, its opens but take too long. With the processor and memory I have, I didn't expect that this must not this way to open. I am using Core Duo 2.8ghz with 1gb memory. There are so many possibilites. It is almost impossible to troubleshoot such problems at arm's length. But someone might get lucky. Do you use Norton Internet Security? If so, what revision? We had a similar-sounding problem on one computer. Symantec suggested upgrading to the latest NIS. That seemed to work. If that does not pan out or you don't want to try, try restarting your system in safe mode without networking and start Excel in safe mode. You might need to consult your computer documentation to learn how to start it in safe mode. On my computer, we press and hold F8 during start-up (black display). It gets me to a BIOS menu that includes safe mode without networking. Once the system is started and you are at the desktop, you can start Excel in safe mode by pressing and holding Ctrl while you double-click the Excel program icon (not an Excel file icon). Note: On my computer, that initially opens a minimize window; I have to click it on the toolbar in order to maximize it. (Try that for now. But the more reliable method is to start Excel from the command line. More on that later.) Opening excel or word files take to long to load. - Microsoft Community Quote
V.T. Eric Layton Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Yes, caching was my first thought. There's probably a cache (Page File) setting that can be adjusted either from within Excel or from within Win XP to hasten startup. Been a while since I had to do any of this Windows stuff, so... therock247uk Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 all office products after 2003 take awhile to start for some reason even on a core i7 processor. Quote
jeffw_00 Posted February 8, 2013 Author Posted February 8, 2013 Thanks everyone - here's some more info 1) According to options->add-ins, I have no Add-ins Enabled. 2) it starts REAL QUICK in safe mode. 3) This isn't -normal-. It's doing something unhelpful. As I mentioned, it opens quickly but then pauses before displaying the worksheet. 4) I have Eset, no Norton on the machine. What -is- odd though, is that when I go to the Add-ins Tab, I have 1 (or 2) Acrobat/PDF writer Add-ins which don't seem to work, but there seems to be no way to remove - any thoughts? Thanks /j Quote

Thanks /j OK, you might want to enable the add-in Lookup Wizard. Apparently, that single add-in has proven to stop this slowdown behavior. The slowdown appears to be a bug, errrr, feature since Office 2007... I wonder why it only does that to some folks and not to others though... Quote

THANKS! /j One possible cause can be if you have mapped a network drive but don't have the networked box turned on. This has been around since XP first came out. Even if the file you are accessing isn't on the networked drive, Office apps try to access *all* the mapped drives and it takes forever to time out when they aren't available. Quote
jeffw_00 Posted February 8, 2013 Author Posted February 8, 2013 ok - i can try that add-in thingie - lewmur - you might also be right, I do have a network drive mapped to my laptop which is only at home sometimes. Good ideas guys - thanks! I'll try these over the next days... /j Quote
jeffw_00 Posted February 8, 2013 Author Posted February 8, 2013 looks like "enable -any- add-in" fixed it - even with the networked drive inaccessible. thanks guys /j Quote
