lewmur Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 Grinding my teeth again!! I don't shutdown my Win box very often, but when I do, it's for a reason. But with the later versions of Windows, when you have auto updating truned on, it seem there is ALWAYS the notice telling me that Windows is installing updates and don't you dare turn off the power!! The problem is, that by the time it finally shuts down, I've forgotten why I wanted to shut down in the first place. :'( :'( Then, when I restart, there is Adobe Flash telling me IT has an update to install!!! 1 Quote
Guest LilBambi Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 You forgot about the configuring of the Windows Updates on Windows 7 when you are rebooting (on the way back up) that comes well before the Adobe Flash or Java updates. Quote
amenditman Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 I always leave my Windows concrete block box on and set auto updates to the middle of the night. That way when I get up in the morning I find one of two things, 1 - the machine is on and I get to find out if anything is borked as an exciting adventure/surprise or 2 - the machine is off and all doubt is removed Either way, good morning from Microsoft. Enjoy your day. Quote
V.T. Eric Layton Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 I update my Win 7 (laptop) once every other week or so because that's about as often as it gets booted up. I update my Win XP (main system) every other day or so depending on whether or not I boot up to play vid games. That's the only reason that system gets booted, actually. XP updates are pretty far and few between these days, though. Quote
Guest LilBambi Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 (edited) XP updates are few and far between because it is on it's way out. It is already on the extended lifecycle track which ends in 2014. Edited December 15, 2012 by LilBambi Quote
Corrine Posted December 16, 2012 Posted December 16, 2012 What are you all talking about? Except for the occasional "out of band" security update, Microsoft releases security updates on the second Tuesday of each month. That is once a month. There are occasional "optional" non-security updates generally released on the second Friday of the month but they very, very seldom require a restart. Due to Adobe Flash Player being embedded in IE10, Adobe is now joining Microsoft in releasing Flash Player updates on the second Tuesday of the month. Your antivirus software should automatically update after you power up the computer. Neither Flash Player nor A/V updates require a restart. So, planning on a restart once per month to keep a computer updates isn't unrealistic. Quote
amenditman Posted December 16, 2012 Posted December 16, 2012 What are you all talking about? We are talking about the bad old days, we are old timers after all. Quote
V.T. Eric Layton Posted December 16, 2012 Posted December 16, 2012 Lew, just do like most Windows users and don't bother updating at all... or running anti-virus, firewalls, etc. What the hey... it's the way most folks do it. Right? Quote
goretsky Posted December 16, 2012 Posted December 16, 2012 Hello, My trick to bypassing all of this to just check for Windows Updates when I first turn my computer on. If there are any updates, I let them download and install while I'm making coffee or what not. When I come back to my desk, I restart the computer (if needed) and then start my computing session for the day, all without being interrupted or having the system reboot unexpectedly. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky 1 Quote
