ebrke
Downloaded several security updates for opensuse 11.3. System had been very sluggish--I had forgotten to disable the updater applet which seems to give my old hardware problems when it tries to notify me of updates waiting. I rebooted and after KDE desktop loaded I saw a blank popup window with the title "Audio Device Removed". Since then I have had no sound at all--internet, playing CD with KsCD, nothing. Trying "Test" in KDE Multimedia System Settings results in silence. Poked around and found alsa-info; large file output with a load of stuff I didn't understand, but did see this ESound Daemon: Installed - Yes (/usr/bin/esd) Running - No Could this be the problem? Anyone have any suggestions at all?
V.T. Eric Layton
That could very well be the problem. If you were using ESound for your audio. Personally, I usually disable it and use ALSA. Try this: # alsaconf ... and see what happens.

Have never paid any attention to audio, it's always just worked with suse. I'll see if I can try alsaconfig later. I've been overwhelmed with family stuff for a while and just hoped my elderly hardware would limp along and not cause me any trouble. Edited January 13, 2012 by V.T. V.T. Eric Layton
Well, SuSE sees your sound card. That's good. Don't worry. We'll get you working again. Just keep us posted...
securitybreach
I am pretty sure OpenSUse uses PulseAudio so alsaconf will not work unless you install alsa. Starting with openSUSE 11.0 pulseaudio is used for GNOME installations.... http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Pulseaudio

V.T. Eric Layton
Well, we need to determine which audio app she's running... ALSA, Esound, or Pulse Audio. Once we know that, we can go from there.

Just shows my sound card: CT4780 SBLive! Value Configured as sound card number 0 Driver snd-emu10k1 Suspect system was running Esound based on results of my running alsa-info. Alsa-info also reported something about finding a newer version of alsa and asked if I wanted to install it; I said no. EDIT: Okay, I just found out from YaST that Pulse Audio is not installed or can't be configured. Guess that leaves Esound or alsa. ebrke
Try starting on this step to troubleshoot: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Audio_troublesh...test_your_sound linux-b7i5:~ # cat /proc/asound/version Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.22.1. linux-b7i5:~ # cat /proc/asound/modules linux-b7i5:~ # cat /proc/asound/cards --- no soundcards --- After going through the procedures at the link, I now seem to have no sound card detected. Sound test did not produce any sound, but no errors either. I did not run alsaconf since it specifically said not to do that for suse 11.2 and I'm on 11.3. After deleting soundcard in YaST and reenabling via edit, volume setting under Other shows nothing but Master, no other settings. I seem to be going backward. ebrke
Post it to http://pastebin.com/ and give us the url. http://pastebin.com/PGcnSvnq This is today after deleting sound card as troubleshooting guide suggested. Much worse off than last night. Do you want last night's also? Also, why are you using 11.3 when 12.1 has been released? Because I doubt I could load 12.1 on my hardware. Haven't looked at specs, but hardware was barely suitable for 11.3. No chance of new hardware now, no money.
securitybreach
Well I just noticed that you do not have any modules loaded and that could be why your card is not recognized: Driver version: 1.0.22.1 Library version: Utilities version: 1.0.23 !!Loaded ALSA modules !!------------------- I am still looking at it. securitybreach
Odd, your card should work out of the box: Creative Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 -------------The card has also a game port witch is recognize by the system automatically, tested on Suse 10.0 and above. http://en.opensuse.org/HCL:Sound Also from the same site: Note that some audio controllers have various audio channels muted by default. You may need to configure the audio channels with the Yast Hardware Audio Configuration tool.
securitybreach
Try to modprobe the driver(module): # modprobe snd_emu10k1

STSince I deleted the sound card, there are no channels showing in Yast Sound, just Master. If you want me to put up last night's output from alsa-info, let me know. Sound card worked fine until last night. Don't know if it was the updates pushed by opensuse or if something else happened, but after the reboot and the window "Audio Device Removed", no sound. ebrke
Thanks for all the help, everyone, but I think this is a hardware issue. I just booted into my almost-forgotten win 2K partition, and I have no sound in win either. My elderly hardware is giving up the ghost, it seems. Display is going bad too. Maybe in a few months I will start to think about some new hardware. I'll start another thread then for that. Do the newer versions of win even allow you to dual boot another OS? V.T. Eric Layton
Do you have an available PCI slot, Elizabeth? I have a nice (older, but nice) Creative sound card that I can send you. It worked fine for me on many Linux installations a few years back. I don't think you'd have any issues with it in OpenSuSE 11.x. Let me know... price is right --> FREE! Thank you, Eric, but I wouldn't have a clue on how to tell if I had an available slot or the ability to install a sound card if I had one. My abilities were always on the software side. System is still usable for now, and when it totally craps out I'll decide what to do.
V.T. Eric Layton
When you're ready, just give a holler. If you can put bread into your toaster, you and install a PCI card on your computer. Here's a video that some fellow made showing how to install a sound card. There are variations in card shape and how the PCI cards are retained to the back of the cases, but it's basically just as this fellow shows here. Since you won't be dealing with Windows, don't worry about the part of the video after the hardware installation. He's just showing how to install Windows drivers and the sound card software, none of which you'll need in Linux. By the way, what is the brand/model of your computer? I can probably find pics online of the interior of it to show you just what you're looking for. Your system might look similar to this one that I just found via Yahoo Image Search:
securitybreach
Agreed Eric, this is a pretty easy process. Just snap the card into the pci slot and the installation is done. You may have to mess with drivers on Windows and such but it is still very easy . It seems more daunting than it really is. You should not have any issues and if do, there are lots of good folks here who would be more than happy to help you out.
