I had McAfee on my computer at one time. I did an uninstall and removed it. Now everytime I open Outlook I get two error messages:"The add-in "C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee VirusScan\Hawk.dll" could not be installed or loaded. This problem may be resolved.......You may be missing a .dll file."and the same message only "scanemal.dll" instead of Hawk.I have searched the registry, uninstalled McAfee, and looked high and low for what is causing this to remain. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Julia,I don't know what operating system you're using, but if you're running Win98SE, try the following:[*] Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information. [*] In the window that appears, click on the Tools menu and choose System Configuration Utility. [*] From there, you can easily examine the contents of your Autoexec.bat file, config.sys file, and others, to see if there are any McAfee programs trying to load on each startup. [*] To stop any program from loading at startup, uncheck the box next to the offending line, or edit the Autoexec.bat, config.sys or whatever, to delete or REMark the line that causes the offending program to try to load. [*] Click on the Startup tab and study the list of programs that startup each time Windows runs. Hopefully, you'll find something related to McAfee in there. [*] To stop any program in the Startup tab from trying to load at startup, simply uncheck the box next to it and restart your computer. [*] If you make a mistake, just go back to the System Configuration Utility and make any required changes. I don't know if this procedure is available in Win2000/XP or not.

Thanks for the attempt. :o I am running XP and I went back and double-checked my msconfig. I thought I had been through everything before. There was something I was not sure about so I cleared that but it still has the same two errors. I think about reformatting and reinstalling the XP but worry about the crazy product activation stuff. There is nothing on the computer that I could not replace, but I would rather not go that drastic for something that is only at the nusiance level.

I'm wondering if System File Checker could be used here; when it tells you what - if any - files have been changed, or are missing, check to see if one is hawk.dll, and if you're sure that's associated with McAfee, just choose to - think it says - update sytem files, or something like that. Hopefully it will keep you from having to re-install. Good luck, :o

Remember, this is rookie advise, but I have had a lot of luck with the program UltraWipe; it has done a good job for me of getting rid of "orphan files" like the ones you are referring to.The personal version is free and you can get more info here. I does a lot better job than the MS utilities.I know a lot of people don't like registry cleaners, so if somebody is going to recommend that, it won't be me...not enough experience with them.

LilBambiI read through everything on the Norton and did not see anything about McAfee or other virus program removal. Am I missing something.JBThanks for the link. I went to it and they demanded my name and email account. I gave them my junk account and all I got was an email back saying they can not send do yahoo because the fiile is too large. I refuse to give my home email to any organization I do not know. That is how I keep it spam free (a year on this account and no spam yet). I did try reg clean the other day and it did not help. Since the "missing" file has a McAfee folder address and the problem started when I removed McAfee I am pretty sure that is the basis of my problems. Digging around I know that it involves something under "services" that tells it to look for the file but I can not figure out how to go in and edit that. It says I can reinstall the "remote procedure call" service but having never delved into any area like that I am hesitant to start mucking things up.Quint:System File Checker?

I was perplexed, because I don't use my primary for this sort of thing, either. I have a free Yahoo account, as you do, for these purposes.I went to the site, clicked on "Downloads" on the left side menu, filled in the info, using my Yahoo address, and they sent the file by email. I haven't gone to my box to check yet, but I'll bet it's there.Anyway, Red Strike is a very highly respected European Company that does a ton of corporate work over there, so I doubt that they would risk being associated with spam; in fact, there is the standard "I would like to receive information" check box at the bottom of the info page, and their default is "unchecked". (We should be so lucky here in the states).

teacher --LOL! What was I thinking LOL! :D As Jim Carey said, "DELETED!" chi-ching!Actually as far as McAfee goes:I couldn't believe the ratings for it here, but it lists the following quote:http://www.cnet.com/software/0-806174-1218...8-20288840.htmlThe following person had luck by reinstalling and uninstalling again, see below ... might be worth a try:

"Nightmare to Uninstall" Angry Customer on 14-Apr-2003 09:02:26 pm  for me the program was good, but uninstalling was a nightmare,i DL the evaluation program of Virus Scan 7.0 it was okay but when it came to unistalling it well lets just say it took me hours to figure it out. Of course i tried going to control panel and went to (add or remove programs) when i tried to uninstall it there was an error and wounld'nt finish uninstalled. After many times of trying of course over many days i didn't just sat there pressing (remove) and yell at the computer all day, i finally tried pressing reinstall instead of remove on the popup window, after reinstalling i rebooted and then tried once more to uninstall and it did work. SO REMEMBER THIS: REINSTALL FIRST THEN UNINSTALL IF YOU STILL WANT TO GET RID OF THIS PROGRAM
Also found this page with a full 'pull it out with tweasers" approach - back up your registry if you try it though, just to be safe! Seems knowledgeable, but ... and you know how that goes. I can't test it here for ya, because I do not have McAfee.http://www.baybooker.com/mcafeeremoval.htmlHope these tips help better than the earlier and deleted Norton removal tool! HE! HE! (Don't know what I was thinking!) :D

teacher - thanks for bringing these problems to light... I think I'm going to drop McAfee and go with AVG solo. I tried having both installed (even with only one realtime running), and it didn't work very well, and I think AVG will work better for me, so I was going to uninstall McAfee... now I know what the problems are, and hopefully will be able to get it removed with little problems :D

Quint:System File Checker?
Sorry if you're not using Win98/ME; in the past, I've had a similar problem, and this did in fact correct it - whether by luck, or accident. When I ran it, there came up several "dll's" and "vxd's" that were not included on the Win98SE disk, saying some were deleted, and some altered. After much investigation, found that they were associated with a program that I had uninstalled, so I just instructed SFC to "update verification data", and the problem disappeared. Hope something here helps: http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/start-142.shtmlhttp://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-...G=Google+Search

Thank you one and all!The nightmare is over. I reinstalled and removed again. No luck. I edited registry settings again. No luck.I went and searched for McAfee removal and got links on viruses.I went and searched for McAfee Uninstall and got links on places wanting to sell me an Uninstall program from Mcafee :o Finally on about page 10 of my last search I found a link that said to go to Tools, Options, Other, Advanced, Add in Manager and there they were. I cleared the two checks and am good to go. At last!I don't think I will ever use another McAfee program. It irks me that it does not uninstall completely under add/remove programs nor is there a removal program on the CD! At least you all motivated me enough to keep digging to solve the problem. Many thanks to you all. You are wonderful folks - no matter what the others say! ;)

Fantastic! Different things work for different situations... I am so glad you found a link to help! And after 10 pages of a search! Been there done that with other things myself...so I know how frustrating it can get! ;) However, this process that did work for you is as clear as mud to me  I am sure it was really clear to you when you did it, but could you provide a little more info please ;)What Tools, Options...etc. ... in what program or was this in WinXP Manage, or Control Panel?Or maybe you could provide the link here for others ... or the search you used and we can go find page 10 ... LOL! :D

Well... just got McAfee uninstalled... all I had to do was reinstall it and then uninstall it... haven't run into any problems so far (w/email and such)... so far so good with AVG running solo... haven't had any crash problems like I did before... (had McAfee & AVG running, AVG as only real-time though)... I'm ready to be done with McAfee... it didn't want to catch the problems I had... Hopefully AVG will do the trick!

In my experience, PC troubleshooting is usually 50% detective work and 50% experience, but the more experience you have, the better you are at the detective work.

I'd agree with you for the most part, but I'd probably go 49% experience, 49% detective work, and 2% luck... there's just some people that have a knack for just making things work... I just wish I was one of them! :o

I guess as usual I was clear as mud! I was talking about within Outlook itself. Step 1: Open OutlookStep 2: Go to the Tools drop down menu.Step 3: Go down to the Options menu.Step 4 Click on the Other Tab. Step 5: Click on the Advanced options rectangle.Step 6: Go down to the bottom of the page and click on the rectangle labeled: Add in Manager Step 7: Clear the boxes that say Hawk and Scanemal.Step 8: Remove the checks in these boxes. Step 9: Click okay twice! There you have it all in excruciating detail. I could not find the link again but found this pretty good one:Hawk removal. It contained screen shots that help show what is going on.Hope this answers LilBambi's questions and anyone else that has the misfortune to deal with this problem.Again many thanks!

Glad to clear it up. :D I have mucked with computers for 20 plus years, but am in reality a novice. I can tell folks how to do about anything with software (usually the real answers :D ), but the hardware, is truly "by the seat of the pants" or whatever the saying. The more I learn, the more I know that I know nothing!

I think that's true for everyone, no matter what the subject. :D
