Screem and Gedit support syntax highlighting for many files. They're both made more for running in GNOME than in KDE. I'm not sure if they fully highlight PHP syntax right now or not. I believe that it will be added soon though. If you prefer KDE, I've heard good things about Quanta.

Quanta (KDE) and BlueFish (gnome) look to be the best for web stuff. Kate is awsome for perl and bash because there's a built in bash shell right in the program. Pretty cool B)

I have not used any other text editor, text based html or php editor since I downloaded Crimson Editor after it was given high praise here for Windows. It truly is a great text/code editor. Wish they'd port it to Linux. ;)I still use whatever tool is best for a given project, but when it comes to quick and dirty text, html and php coding, I really love Crimson Editor too.vi .. of course if you want to do it command line, then vi is great ... but personally I prefer mc's (Midnight Commander) text editor when I am at the command line in Linux.
