friendofdot Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 Have a two month old Dell with 2.6ghz and 512Mb., running WinXP Home Edition, and my microsoft apps have started loading slowly. Scanned for viruses under McAfee 7.02 and Housecall. Did clean disk and defrag. Did PCPitstop which said everything was running smoothly. To the best of my knowledge, I think this started right after the last Windows update which was yesterday (or at least, I didn't notice before that time). Because I have used System Restore already three times, I am reluctant to use it again (I download crazy programs like AIM). After reading the Microsoft Knowledge Base, I have considered reinstalling or repairing. I do realize that all computers slow down after the first couple of months, but my non MS programs launch so much faster. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Quote
quint Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 It's a long thread, but it will probably help you:http://www.pcqanda.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcb...er&viewmode=allHope you figure it out, Quote
friendofdot Posted April 19, 2003 Author Posted April 19, 2003 Wow, thank you very much, Quint. My Microsoft apps are loading normally (fast) again. Only had to read about 6 of the replies in that thread you posted to see that all I had to do was remove that last update. They even explained how to remove updates. In the future, I will not be so quick to update. Thanks, again, for the help! Quote
greengeek Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 I never use automatic update on anything and a lot of updates are more trouble than they are worth (for home users), just look at all the problems people have after they have installed the latest "quick fix".Joy Quote
Big Jeff Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 I must be one of the lucky ones. I have never had a problem with Windows updates, including SP1. I've been running the original installation of Win XP Home for nearly a year and a half. I've heard the horror stories, and I cringe every time I have to update. I always do my updates manually, immediately after a restart and with startup apps disabled via StartupCPL. I don't know if it makes a difference but I'm not taking any chances. Quote
GolfProRM Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 Quint,Thanks for the info... I just had to do an over-the-top-install (to replace some virus-ridden files that I had to delete). I installed SP1 and then the rest of the crit. updates... after I rebooted, I noticed everything was slow. Thanks to your post, I knew what the problem was. I uninstalled the update, and now it works!! Quote
quint Posted April 19, 2003 Posted April 19, 2003 Ryan,Glad it helped you. Have not had a virus yet, but have had to re-install everything many times - for myself and my son/daughter - not always fun! It really amazes me that if MS considers that update to be critical, then what do the "recommended" ones do? Quote
