I've always heard that my hard drive could not be cleaned so that the internet cache and cookies can not be retrieved. Just where do the files go when deleted? I clean out my cache and cookie files and then I use Norton Wipe Info to clear the free space. Does this get rid of them or are they still on the hard drive somewhere? :)

Like Temmu said :P However, Fred Langa (of the Langa List) has a cool little cleaner-upper for just such occasions :)I can definitely vouch for Clean9x (I use it once a week in Win98se) ... it is a wonder! Cleans out all temporary internet files AND subfolders, temp files and subfolders, and the cookies index.dat ... which is rebuilt automatically with whatever your current cookies are upon reboot. (It does not remove the main folder for c:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files or c:\Windows\Temp ... these are needed and left in tact.It is called:Clean9x for Win9xCleanXP for WinXPAnd can be found on Fred Langa's Scrub Your Hard Drive Clean page. Not sure how it works exactly in WinXP, but it is actually done in DOS mode in Win9x. It may do it on the next boot for WinXP like scandisk does, but I am not sure. Maybe someone else who uses it could answer that.

I also use Mark Thompson's AnalogX Cookie Wall to manage my cookies so when I use Clean9x, it only keeps the cookies I want in the list file.Cookie Wall is free and can be found .hereClean9x and CleanXP are also free utilities.

Good call Lil.I am a big fan of both of the tools you mentioned. Both Fred's and AnalogX's tools are amazing. Very small, low on using resources and gets the job done. I have been using Cookie Wall almost since it was first released....great proggy!!!

I have been using a "shredder", which cleans out my cache and cookies, and is capable of overwriting my empty disk space. The program is called Ultrawipe, and it is from the EU (Germany, I think). At the website, there is both an email version and a version for download. The personal versions are free.To learn more, go here.It has seemed to work really well for me over the past 6 mos or so.

I've used CookiePal for years for manging my cookies. It gives me full control over all aspects of cookie management. It's shareware (cost $15).Cookie PalFor the Temporary Internet Folder, I depend on Cache Sentry. It keeps my cache at the size I want and removes files as necessary. It also removes strays that somehow get disassociated with the index.dat files. It's freeware.Cache Sentry
