ChipDoc Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I like his Bandwidth Summary myself. Going to have to check that one out myself. I also like his nom de plume, 11-1 Grouchy Gaijin! But though I admire his skill, I've really got to wonder sometime. Perhaps it's just a generational thing, but why the heck would anyone wish to turn their desktop into an oversized cellphone screen? Quote

Because they can and 2.) They obviously have A LOT more time on their hands then some. I think if anything that screen demonstrates the power and usefulness of that small program. There is a few different things I would like my conky to display but I just do not have time to research and perform the trial and error.Ian Quote

Let me know what you want and I'll keep an eye out for it as I browse around for the next few days.Well one of the things I would like displayed is the weather just like in the example below. I have read that you need conkyforcast though I do not know if that is a seperate download or a created script or what, then you need to have other files installed so that "clouds" are displayed etc etc. But this is more or less something that I think is cool but certainly nothing I "NEED" as I can go and look at the weather forcast on line or watch the evening news. :)Ian Quote
securitybreach Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 ConkyForecast is in the AUR repos, although you will still need to configure it: ╔═ comhack@Cerberus 01:18 PM ╚═══ ~-> yaourt -Ss conkyforecastaur/conkyforecast 2.15-1 [installed] (70) Provides weather forecast information to be displayed in conky.aur/conkyforecast-bzr 63-1 (103) Provides weather forecast info sourced from the weather.com XOAP service, for use in Conky. ichase Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 It's amazing what you can do but there is a lot to it and when I get the time to really sit down and read how all of these files come together, then I shall have weather. ;)Like I said, Conky is great but I have a lot more important things to learn first about Linux before I learn about configuring .conkyrc and running scripts to get clouds to show. Here's one I haven't managed to figure out yet - how do I get my Conky to appear on the desktop at bootup and/or without that bloody window bar? Quote
ichase Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 Here's one I haven't managed to figure out yet - how do I get my Conky to appear on the desktop at bootup and/or without that bloody window bar?In E17 when I was running it in Arch I created a script and added it to the applications as such:1) Create a startup script in your home directory. Give a name to it with .sh extension. Such as conky_start.sh This is the script.#!/bin/shsleep 20 && #this will have conky starting up 20 seconds after your screen renders. You could change it to 10 which should be fine too.conky -c ~/.conkyrc & 2) Go to Settings>Settings Panel>Apps>New Application3) In the New Application panel, navigate to the startup script in your home directory you have just created. Click apply. (if memory serves me correctly, this will make it executable as if you chmod the script)4) Go to Startup Applications in the same panel; the new conky application will show up on the list.5) Highlight it and click Add6) This adds conky to the startup applications7) Log out – login and conky should show up on the desktop. It worked in Arch for me.All the best,Ian Quote
securitybreach Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Well Ian, actually none of that is even needed but nice tip anyway. Just add the entry to your ~/.xinitrc file: #!/bin/sh## ~/.xinitrc## Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)gnome-settings-daemon &xscreensaver -no-splash &numlockx & nitrogen --restore &sleep 10 && conky -c ~/.conkyrc &tint2 &exec openbox-session# exec ck-launch-session xmonadNote: You will have to use Ian's method if your distro does not use a .xinitrc file. ChipDoc Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Now hang on a second Josh - don't be so quick to harass Ian. HIS was the method that worked because Bodhi doesn't use a .xinitrc file! Still has that window header though Quote

securitybreach Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Window header? If you mean that it is a window instead of embedded on the desktop, then you need to change this in your .conkyrc: own_window_type window to own_window_type desktop Quote

ichase Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 The conky.config file is the generic conky file loaded with the program. You can use that as a base to set up your conky or just vi or joe or nano ~/.conkyrc which will bring up a blank screen and cut and paste either one you find online that you like or what you currently have in your conky.config file. Once you have a .conkyrc file, conky will look at that. All the best,Ian{attempting to redeem himself. } Quote
