I hit a bit of a snag. At the moment, I'm using Win98SE. So now, everything seems to be working well, except for my sound card. It's not getting picked up by Win98SE and I don't have a disk for it. I opened up the case and the card has no indication of what it is. Any thoughts on how to find out what kind of card I have?I'll be trying my XP install over this 98 install this weekend, I hope. Thanks, jrock

Download Aida32 v.3.85 ( http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32 ) in .zip version, then run it.(Aida32.exe)No need to install, just run it.That might give you enough info.If that doesn't help, try this:Go here http://th99.pley.org/#6 and click Sound/Multimedia;Click on the PICS links, a new window will open.Look if you can spot the card which is in your machine. If you find it, hover your mouse pointer over it : a "tooltip" will show you the brand/type.Good Luck !

Under computer properties what does it call your card?

If you aren't dead set on Mandrake I'm really liking Jamd. It's based on redhat and it plays well with xp (even runs ok on my dell laptop). I could rundown the pros for you, but I'll wait to see how set you are before I tell you why I really like it.

Oh I doubt that. There's gotta be something on the card. A chip with a name on it. A number stamped on it or on a sticker. Where did you get the card? Is this a name brand computer? Do you have a way to snap a picture of it?

How about downloading and using Aida32? It'll tell you what hardware is in your system. :P

The markings on the card's chips should be there. If you can't see it, try getting it out and inspecting the chips under daylight. Also try the card on ther PCI slots and see if it gets detected when Windows loads. The drivers, if you know the make of your card, would be available on the Net.

Sorry nline:Creative SB Live! Value Sound Card PCIPhew! Also, genaldar - I'm not dead set on Mandrake, but the folks of the All Things Linux world suggested for me, as I am a beginner. I think I may go Mandrake for now, but I will keep your suggestion in mind. Thanks!Jrock

That card wasn't marked? Hmm, Every SBLive card I've ever seen has had the SoundBlaster Live logo on it. Fiiguring out the exact submodel has often been a pain, but it also had that logo.
