Common limits seen with this problem are 16M, 32M, 64M, and 128M. To get around this, we need to explicitly specify the amount of memory to the kernel at boot time via the mem=<actual_memory_goes_here> flag. <br><br>In the following example, we have a 128M machine but only 64M are being seen by Linux. At the LILO: prompt, type:<br>LILO: linux mem=128M<br>After the machine boots, we use the free command to see if the larger amount of memory was recognized by the kernel. If so, we can add an append= line to the /etc/lilo.conf file and rerun LILO to make it happen permanently. The example from above would to edit their lilo.conf file to look like the following:<br>boot=/dev/sda<br>map=/boot/map<br>install=/boot/boot.b<br>prompt<br>timeout=50<br><br>image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.12-20<br> label=linux<br> root=/dev/sda1<br> initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.12-20.img<br> read-only<br> append="mem=128M"<br><br>Do not forget to run /sbin/lilo -v after editing the file.<br><br><br><b>If you do have problems with Machine Speed and Large Amounts of RAM </b>:<br><u><i>Question:</i></u> <br><br>I have over 64 MB in my Pentium or greater machine. However, it seems sluggish when doing anything. If I tell Linux to use only 64 MB with the mem=64M option in the lilo.conf file and rerun lilo -v, it seems to speed up the machine. What is going on and can I do anything about it? <br><br><u><i>Answer:</i></u> <br><br>The most likely answer to this problem has to do with the motherboard of the computer. Many motherboards limit the L2 cache to be able to access up to 64 MB. The ones that we know of to be affected by this problem are the NX (I believe this was only for Pentium 60-90), FX, VX, and TX boards from Intel. These are limited to a maximum of 512K of L2 cache. There may be other boards that have this problem, but these are our current candidates.<br><br><br><br>That's all what one could find about "max RAM" on their sites. <!--emo&--><img src='http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> </span></td> </tr><tr class='postdetails'> <td class='row1' align='left' valign='top' width='20%'><b>teacher</b></td> <td class='row1' align='left' valign='top' width='80%'>Posted on Nov 7 2003, 02:47 AM<hr noshade size='1'><span class='postcolor'> Just thought of a show-stopper that might force her into Mandrake. Guest LilBambi Posted November 7, 2003 Share Posted November 7, 2003 (edited) Thanks striker for your report on this.I have seen something like this in the past on rare occasions.However, when I deleted the garbled info and left the real text, it generally worked fine.I have not seen it since the very early days of the Forum.I have contacted Scot and Arena2045 about it so we can find out what may be going on.Thanks againEDIT: I have also posted a question about this to the IPB folks. Hope to hear back soon.BTW: have you noticed whether the posts in question had only one quote in the reply, or was it a reply with 2 or more distinctive quotes in the reply? Editing replies with no quotes2. Editing replies with a single quote in the post3. Editing replies with multiple quotes from same quoted message4. Editing replies with multiple quotes from various messages5. Other (please give description)Like striker did, if anyone can give other specifics, it would be very helpful.Thanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Owyn Posted November 7, 2003 Share Posted November 7, 2003 This post in test shows the problems.I created the test case after having problems with multiple quotes in a post in ATL. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Cluttermagnet Posted November 7, 2003 Share Posted November 7, 2003 This looks similar to a bug I have seen personally. After a long sequence of edits on a given message that I had already posted to the forum, I would be served an incomplete window that lacked the Preview and Submit Modified Post buttons, plus anything that normally should appear below them on the full page. I found that this usually happened only after quite a number of consecutive edits on a single post that did work. The cause was never certain, but others did comment at the time that they had seen it too. The malfunction only affected my ability to make further edits to that one post. All other forum functions remained normal. Usually, giving it a rest overnight would allow the problem to self-correct. I suspected that it was a software problem at the forum server, as no amount of closing/ restarting my browser or Windows fixed it from my end. Guest LilBambi Posted November 7, 2003 Share Posted November 7, 2003 This post in test shows the problems.I created the test case after having problems with multiple quotes in a post in ATL.Thanks Owyn,When I tried to edit the first post in that thread, I did see all the HTML in the edit box.And when I tried to edit Bruno's two posts down, it did not haev the HTML in the edit box.That could be a clue. ibe98765 Posted January 4, 2004 Share Posted January 4, 2004 I haven't run into this in a long while. It's happening now at:http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/index.ph...&s=entry59203I see all the raw HTML code and there isn't any "Add reply" or "Preview Post" buttons at the bottom.Wondering if this has anything to do with posts that have multiple levels of quotes in them?Did you ever get an answer from IPB? Guest LilBambi Posted January 4, 2004 Share Posted January 4, 2004 IPB has moved to two levels of help, free member to member and paid help.I have been waiting on an answer from anyone regarding this in the IPB member to member area.It does appear to have something to do with editing multiple distinct quotes in messages, however I have not been able to get a peep out of anyone over at IPB.Maybe some of you can add your voice here: IPB Troubleshooting and Problem Solving: Some quotes troublesFurther, member to member help on the forum has no ability to search the forums now, this is for paid members only now. I have not been able to search for several months now on their forums AT ALL.They changed the water and unpaid/free members get the following message when trying to search the board: This menu has been disabled Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
ibe98765 Posted January 4, 2004 Share Posted January 4, 2004 1. Perhaps moving to the latest release would solve the problem?2. Maybe we need to buy the $149 support option? That gives you direct access to their tech support. If $149 is a problem, then Scot can setup a PayPal link for contributions. If every active member ponied up $2-5, we could cover the cost. However...inside the textarea for the main input of the post...I get the original post, but I also get this: </textarea><table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tr> <td><input type='checkbox' name='enableemo' value='yes' checked></td> <td width="100%">Do you wish to <b>enable</b> emoticons for this post?</td> </tr> <!--IBF.SIG_CLICK--> <tr> <td><input type='checkbox' name='enablesig' value='yes' checked></td> <td width="100%">Do you wish to <b>enable</b> your signature for this post?</td> </tr> <!--IBF.END_SIG_CLICK--> </table></td> </tr><!--QUOTE BOX--><tr> <td valign="top" class='row1'><b>Post Icons</b></td> <td valign="top" width="100%" class='row1'> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="1"> <IMG SRC="style_images/1/icon1.gif" ALIGN='center' alt=''> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="2" > <IMG SRC="style_images/1/icon2.gif" ALIGN='center' alt=''> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="3" > <IMG SRC="style_images/1/icon3.gif" ALIGN='center' alt=''> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="4" > <IMG SRC="style_images/1/icon4.gif" ALIGN='center' alt=''> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="5" > <IMG SRC="style_images/1/icon5.gif" ALIGN='center' alt=''> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="6" > <IMG SRC="style_images/1/icon6.gif" ALIGN='center' alt=''> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="7" > <IMG SRC="style_images/1/icon7.gif" ALIGN='center' alt=''> <br> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="8"> <IMG SRC="style_images/1/icon8.gif" ALIGN='center' alt=''> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="9" > <IMG SRC="style_images/1/icon9.gif" ALIGN='center' alt=''> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="10" > <IMG SRC="style_images/1/icon10.gif" ALIGN='center' alt=''> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="11" > <IMG SRC="style_images/1/icon11.gif" ALIGN='center' alt=''> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="12" > <IMG SRC="style_images/1/icon12.gif" ALIGN='center' alt=''> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="13" > <IMG SRC="style_images/1/icon13.gif" ALIGN='center' alt=''> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="14" > <IMG SRC="style_images/1/icon14.gif" ALIGN='center' alt=''> <BR> <INPUT type="radio" name="iconid" value="0" CHECKED> [ Use None ] </td> </tr><tr> <td class="row1" width='20%'><b>Edit Options</b></td> <td class="row1" width="100%" valign='middle'><input type='checkbox' name='add_edit' value='1' class='forminput'> <b>Add</b> the 'Edit by' line in this post?</td> </tr><tr> <td class='mainfoot' align="center" colspan="2"><input type="submit" name="submit" value="Submit Modified Post" tabindex='4' class='forminput' accesskey='s'> <input type="submit" name="preview" value="Preview Post" tabindex='5' class='forminput'></td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </form></table><a name="top"> <!-- Cgi-bot TopicSummaryTop --> <br> <table cellpadding='0' cellspacing='0' border='0' width='95%' bgcolor='#345487' align='center'> <tr> <td> <table cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1' border='0' width='100%'> <tr> <td valign='left' colspan='2' class='titlemedium'>Last 10 Posts [ In reverse order ]</td> </tr> <!-- Cgi-bot End TopicSummaryTop --><tr class='postdetails'> <td class='row1' align='left' valign='top' width='20%'><b>steeler fan for life</b></td> <td class='row1' align='left' valign='top' width='80%'>Posted on Mar 20 2004, 10:31 PM<hr noshade size='1'><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteBegin--Bruno+Mar 20 2004, 06:03 PM--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Bruno @ Mar 20 2004, 06:03 PM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->For the CD: please post:<br># cat /etc/fstab<br># cat /etc/lilo.conf ( from the distro you use lilo . . if this is Drake the Drake lilo, if this is Slack the Slack lilo )<br><br>Also . . you have only 1 HD ? I did, at one point, have sound in this here install of Slack. I'm sure that updates of mine have ruined it, I'm just not sure what I did/need to do. KDE used to give me an error (I believe it was something along the lines of "/dev/dsp does not exist"; i'm bad at remembering error messages...and I said "do not show this again"). I am 99% sure that I updated alsa through swaret, perhaps there is a new command/configure that I need to do?<br><br>2)Perhaps a bigger issue...I cannot burn CD's with my CD-RW drive. I can access CDs through my DVD drive (top drive in the case, if that means <i>anything</i> at all), I don't think I've tried to even access them in the CD-RW drive. /mnt only lists "cdrom", no "cdrom1" or "cdrom2". I don't believe its mounted either, as I had to mount it previously myself.<br><br>I don't really know what other kind of information I can give...but I will gladly supply anything you much wiser experts need to see. Neil P Posted March 21, 2004 Share Posted March 21, 2004 Hmmm.I tried to go in and edit other posts...and they work fine (including this one)...maybe its because I have 3 quotes in that particular post? I'm lost here. This doesn't make any sense.Maybe a moderator/admin (someone with super post editing abilities) can try it and see if they are having the same problem? It is my second post in the thread "New Problems - Slack 9.1". Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest LilBambi Posted March 21, 2004 Share Posted March 21, 2004 Yes, this on occasion has happened. I have merged your Topic Neil with this Topic on this subject.You will see we all have experienced this but very infrequently and almost always with multiple quote posts.Still no answers from IPB.
