I have a desktop computer that is loaded with photos, I have a laptop that has a cd burner, Iwould like to burn the photos to clear out the desktop. Both computers are running XP home version, the desktop has only usb 1.0 the laptop has firewire as well as usb 1.0 . How should I connect thetwo computers to burn the photos?

Do they have network cards in them? That would be the easiest way

To connect 2 computers directly to each via their respective network cards requires a cross-over cable. A regular ethernet path cable will not work. Connecting each computer via USB will require a special USB cable that has a male connector on each end. Regular USB cables have male/female connectors. The same applies for FireWire.

Don't bother connecting the two computers directly and spending money on an extra cable, it sounds you already have all of the equipment you need.Make sure both your laptop and desktop have the same workgroup name (right click "My Computer" > "Identification" tab > "Network ID" button). Enable file sharing on your desktop (if it's not already), then share the directory that contains all of the photos (right-click on the folder, select "Sharing" and select the read-only option).Your desktop will hook up with a wire to the router, and your laptop wirelessly. Go into your network neighborhood on your laptop, the add a network place (browse to the network resource that is your desktop PC and add it). From there you should be able to burn the files onto a CD, either directly from the network path, or, probably better, copy the files from the desktop onto the laptop first, then burn them from the laptop's hard drive on the CD-R.

I have to say that Marsden's suggestion can be a good solution. This is how I networked a couple of 2 computer networks for some years. A cross-over cable is only around $12, available at Staples (among other places) & is clearly marked as a cross-over ethernet cable. As epp pointed out, your workgroup name must be the same & you need to enable file sharing.Good Luck! ;)
