V.T. Eric Layton Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 I received an email from Ken just a few moments ago. He asked me to start a post here in BATL to ask those closest to Bruno for some suggestions on what should be on the memorial plaque that Ken wants to install at the Bruno Knaapen Technology Learning Center. Also, finances are tight for the Helios Project right now and a small donation toward the cost of the plaque would be much appreciated. Also, if you can... kick in a little extra for The Helios Project too. It's a very worthy cause... a favorite of Bruno's. I'm sure Ken would appreciate it.=====Now, post your suggestions for the plaque below here. Thanks! :)Here's mine...A favorite quote of Bruno's: We try to avoid the word "newbie", it does no justice to the efforts we, also the beginners, put in to learn a new operating system. I think the wish to learn Linux shows a brave attitude and deserves a better qualification. Quote
Eggdog Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 We try to avoid the word "newbie", it does no justice to the efforts we, also the beginners, put in to learn a new operating system. I think the wish to learn Linux shows a brave attitude and deserves a better qualification. To me, that quotation is ultimate Bruno, and as good as it gets. That philosophy helped straighten out my thinking on some matters, not all of them Linux-related. Quote
amenditman Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 EricIt should bring to mind bravery, compassion, passion, adventurous explorer, loving teacher, father figure, and for sure freedom as we all know it. Quote
onederer Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 How about retiring Bruno's "Le Profeseur Pingoin" icon, and place it on the Plaque? Quote
georgeg4 Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Another great quote I remember well from Bruno is There is no such thing as a dumb question Quote
V.T. Eric Layton Posted March 3, 2010 Author Posted March 3, 2010 That's a good one too, George! :)Thanks for the input so far, folks. Every idea will give Ken ideas as to what would be appropriate. Keep 'em coming. Quote
V.T. Eric Layton Posted March 4, 2010 Author Posted March 4, 2010 C'mon, folks.... there are a lot of Bruno Knaapen friends here. Let's have some ideas. Ken needs some inspiration from us. Quote
securitybreach Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Sorry Eric, not too good with expressing feelings. Although, I think your quote was one of the most memorable to me and Onederer's ideal is wonderful. Quote
alphaomega Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 Sorry Eric, not too good with expressing feelings. Although, I think your quote was one of the most memorable to me and Onederer's ideal is wonderful.I agree with securitybreach. How about something like this:Place Bruno's "Le Profeseur Pingoin" icon on the Plaque as noted by onederer.Include Bruno's quote as noted in Eric's post. And add a picket sign with the word "newbie"but have that word enclosed in a "red circle with right slash.Just a thought... rolanaj Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 or a mention of Linux explorer which is what he liked to call people new to linux Quote
ebrke Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Particularly since funds are tight, maybe just a reference to the fact that the plaque is a memorial to Bruno, a man who believed in the empowerment that comes from the free sharing of knowledge. Quote

Eric Layton Posted March 6, 2010 Author Posted March 6, 2010 Particularly since funds are tight, maybe just a reference to the fact that the plaque is a memorial to Bruno, a man who believed in the empowerment that comes from the free sharing of knowledge.Good point. If the trophy/plaque shop charges by the letter, it could get expensive. I wouldn't want to skimp on anything honoring Bruno, but knowing the man, he'd probably be telling Ken to spend the money on some much needed hardware for the kids at the Center rather than spending it on a plaque for him. ebrke Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Agreed. Bruno would have cared much more about the result than the dedication, although I think he was really touched when the learning center became a reality. I'm so glad it happened while he was still here with us. Quote
V.T. Eric Layton Posted March 6, 2010 Author Posted March 6, 2010 Yes, indeed. Bruno was quite surprised, honored, and humbled by what Ken managed to pull off in such a short time. Quote
SueD Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 What about...Bruno KnaapenTeacher, Mentor, Linux Advocate? Quote
réjean Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 I like it Sue!It is right to the point and universal. Then if people ( parents or students ) want to know more about Bruno someone can tell them about Eric, George and rolanaj's quotes as an anecdote ( to emphasis the kind of teacher and mentor he was. ) Quote
Guest LilBambi Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 All such great ideas! On a plaque, you would want to be somewhat brief so the staccato statements are actually less expensive as they generally charge per character....Having said that, to fully capture Bruno's Linux and Open Source beliefs, I think we could say Linux/Open Source Advocate in Sue's or make sure that Eric's is inclusive of all Open Source because Bruno was a fully Open Source person.I was surprised to hear that he even used The Gimp instead of Photoshop even though he did professional graphics work among other things.Just my two cents LOL!
