JerryM Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 (edited) Sonic Record Now came installed on both of my machines. It is difficult to close when finished, and sometimes reads the DVD I recorded, but when I put a blank DVD in it runs through the complete cycle, but instead of the disk being recorded the reply is that it could not be read. It ruins the disk. Usually the next disk is recorded OK.I am wondering if there is a program that I can install that will replace Sonic Record Now?It will have to be pretty simple.I am using Windows XP.Thanks.Regards,Jerry Edited February 26, 2010 by JerryM Quote
JerryM Posted February 27, 2010 Author Posted February 27, 2010 I note that Gizmo has a section on what I need.http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-...e.htm#burnawareHe says that ImgBurn is the best, but has some reservations for average users. Has anyone here used any of the ones mentioned on his site?Regards,Jerry Quote
zlim Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 (edited) I use ImgBurn for ISOs only. I do not use it for data because it closes the CD/DVD. Ordinarily you can burn in sessions. You close the session but let the CD open. That means you can continue to add data until the CD is full. I do not want to wait until I have about 700MB of data to burn a CD and there is no point to burn just a few MBs of data and no longer be able to add to it.I've tried quite a few burning programs and most were disastrous - but that is me and my one computer, unfortunately.I'll have a look but I think the one people seemed to like was CD Burner XP Pro.My notes on Burn Aware just say disaster. Ashampoo Burning studio (not sure if people meant the free or pay version) has also been mentioned several times. I may have tried this but it would have been years ago and not in XP so I can't comment on it.http://download.cnet.com/Ashampoo-Burning-...4-10776287.htmlBefore you start experimenting, might I suggest that you get and install Revo Uninstaller.http://majorgeeks.com/Revo_Uninstaller_d5706.htmlUse it to remove Sonic. It will use the program's own add/remove to uninstall but then it goes further and picks through the registry too. I've kept Revo at the default removal setting Moderate and never had a problem. Two warnings when using Revo: if you are asked to reboot (due to the program's uninstaller) do not - let Revo finish completely before rebooting and when you are presented with a tree of registry items, DO NOT CLICK select all and remove. Some items are bolded. Those are the items you want to remove; you never want to remove items in normal type because those are critical registry keys and removal of them can make the computer unbootable.Removing burning software can cause problems in the CD/DVD drive being recognized; that's why I suggest using Revo to get as clean a removal of any burning program you try.edited for spelling Edited February 27, 2010 by zlim Quote
striker Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Deep Burner from AstonSoft: http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/DeepBurner/deepburner.htmlCDBurnerXP : http://www.cdburnerxp.se/I used both of them on XP with good results, however imo CDBurnerXP is a bit more mature and offers way more features. There's one caveat to this: it needs the .Net framework to function. On Vista 64bit I use CDBurnerXP with great results. Quote
JerryM Posted February 27, 2010 Author Posted February 27, 2010 I tried three, but settled on Ashampoo as the best for me. It is straight-forward, and simple. Overall it does what I need. The top two recommended by Gizmo did not suit me as well. Thanks for the help.Regards,Jerry Quote
