Truncated Links

Recommended Posts

Lately, I am noticing that any link that is posted is being truncated. This causes HUGE problems when attempts are made to copy posts to save/send to others. Here is one example: My latest post at http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/forums/inde...=ST&f=25&t=3083 Item#2 has been trimmed. Which means that I cannot copy this post and send it to someone! Come to think of it, this above link is going to be truncated as well? WHY? Is saving a few characters really worth the trouble that it really causes? I have always had problems with the "hyperlink" function at forums but this latest trick is equally a bad idea! Please reconsider!Your thoughts, please? :w00t:

If you're using firebird, just right-click and hit "Copy link location" and you'll get the whole link with no problems. :pirate: It does it to keep it on one line and not cause horizontal scrollbars. :)

http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/forums/inde...=ST&f=25&t=3083The quote is the URL you posted. The second URL is one I just copy/pasted from the page the other one took me to. I wanted to be able to compare them. At this point, I can see the truncated part. But when I preview the post, it gets cut off again. There must be some sort of character-string length limit or something. You make it sound as though this was some kind of plot on the part of Scot et.al. It isn't. It could be some spastic function of IPB, but to tell you the truth, I've never noticed it before and have never had trouble copy/pasting URL's from here to emails and PM's. And while I didn't look closely at the URL's I sent, they worked. So I don't know what to tell you except that I'll ask around and see if someone has a clue. The truncated URL still works from here. But it doesn't if sent in email, for you?

Just for the record, GolProRM had the reason right. And his solution also works in Internet Explorer and other browsers. (In IE, just right-click the link and choose "Copy Shortcut.")The point is to keep the post from stretching horizontally, which makes every message in a thread wider -- perhaps forcing people at lower resolutions to have to scroll side to side. This is a good thing, not a bad thing. And it is built into the forum software. I don't even believe that there's a setting to turn this on and off in the Admin software. But if there is, it's the default behavior -- and the correct behavior. Not everything that seems new or different is a bad thing. I'd like to encourage everyone to post feedback and suggestions in a positive tone of voice. Give us the benefit of the doubt. Expect that we've done something for a good reason, because in many cases we have. There may be things we have overlooked. But we're open to constructive criticism and suggestions. -- Scot
