bigaldoc
I have Windows 7 as well as XP and Vista on this machine. In Windows 7 I can't "see" the Application Data folder in my XP profile on another partition. I've done all the usual stuff like folder options of view all files, hidden and system. I need to see it so I can tell Firefox in Win 7 to use the same profile that's on my XP installation. Is it a permissions thing?

Is it a permissions thing?Hi bigaldoc,I don't have an exact answer for you but one thing I would recommend (as a longtime firefox user) is to keep each Firefox profile folder separate for each of the operating systems you're running. If your goal here is to be able to share bookmarks, you can copy the bookmarks to a separate partition (or drive) and point Fx to that location. For example, you have WinXP on C:\; Vista on D:\; and Windows 7 on E:\ You can use one central location for your bookmarks (keep it on C: partition or copy it to different partition altogether) and within Firefox, type 'about:config' in the address bar.- right-click on any of the listed preferences, and choose New -> String.- enter the preference name: browser.bookmarks.file- for the value, enter the new file path (including the file name) of your bookmarks.json file. Try turning off UAC in Win 7 long enough to port your XP stuff to Win 7. Or, if that doesn't work, boot XP and copy the FF directory to your Win 7 partition. bigaldoc
Thanks, Tushman and Lewmur. Unfortunately, I don't think I want to go in the direction either of you is suggesting, although I WILL try turning off the Win7 UAC for a moment to see if that fixes the problem. When I installed Vista last year it was a permissions thing, even though I COULD "see" the profile, Firefox wouldn't use it until I got permissions straightened out. I don't remember fer sure what I had to do.My story of why is that I am and will continue to use all three OSs, every day and while in each one I need to be able to access Firefox and Thunderbird. Because I'm such a finicky guy, I am used to not only my Fx bookmarks, but addons, GUI customizations, personal toolbar, mail folders and a few others as well. I don't want to have to duplicate a profile folder three times every time I make some slight change. I suppose I could put the Fx and TB profiles in a "neutral zone" partition that not "owned by any of the three OSs and I may yet try that too.I'm sure I'll get there in Win7 as I did in Vista where it works wonderfully. goretsky
Hello,Have you tried giving the account you are logging into Microsoft Windows 7 with as full access to the application data directory on the Windows XP disk volume? If so, did that make any difference?Regards,Aryeh Goretsky

If so, did that make any difference? No, I got so busy yesterday on other things I didn't have time to do more with Win 7. Today sometime I'll try just that very thing and let you know. Thanks. GolfProRM
Your best bet, especially for ease of management is to move the Firefox profile to a more open location. Then you won't have to worry about figuring out permissions every time you install a new OS. It also makes it easier to backup the profile if it's kept in an easy-to-find location. bigaldoc
This is in response to both Aryeh and Ryan. Late yesterday, when I booted to Windows 7 I WAS able to see the Application Data folder. I did have to go to the profile folders for both Fx and TB and give "Full Control" permission to "Everyone." But now Fx and TB are performig as I would like them too in all THREE OSs.Yes, I could move the profiles to "neutral ground" but that would only be a small part of what I'm faced with in running three OSs. There are MANY other apps in which I'll have to deal with this permissions problem, but that's OK. Windows 7 seems to be a lot easier to work with so far than Vista, so I ain't complaining! As a fiddler with all three OSs, I'm tweaking and installing several things each day in Win7 and things are going nicely, so far. Hey, thanks for chiming in fellas!
