jolphil Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 (edited) Hi all,I recently did a virus scan on my wife's computer with WinXP home and it took just over two hours to scan..Her C:\ drive is loaded with various big programs that she uses but that is not the question..What is the question is, why are there so many java programs listed? Please note that most updates are at least 100 megs in size..Do I need all those updates or can I remove the ones I don't need..Please look at the attached URL for her add-remove programs listed on image shack and give me your best advice..Note: I will do an image backup first before pruning the drive..Next thing is if I can get a reasonable image for you to review..Thank you all for your best advice..Please look HereJolphil Edited September 9, 2009 by jolphil Quote
Guest LilBambi Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 In the not so old days, you would install the new Java and then have to go to Add and Remove programs to remove previous versions manually. In the technical vastness of the future, Java has finally joined the rest of the plugin world and removed the old versions when it installs the new one.I would go through and uninstall everything except the latest one; then get the latest update and that single old one will also go away. Guest LilBambi Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 NOTE: likely part of the reason for the infections was due to the old plugins. I would suggest getting that Java updated than heading over to Secunia.com and running their online software scanner. It will scan for most internet facing programs and plugins to let you know what is not updated. Quote
Guitar Man Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 FWIWCan I remove the older versions and do I need multiple versions of Java installed on my system?Nowadays, the recommended routine is to uninstall any older version(s) in A/R P and install just the latest version. Quote
zlim Posted September 9, 2009 Posted September 9, 2009 I ran JavaRA http://raproducts.org/ on all my windows computers to be sure all the old Sun Java was off. Then I installed the latest update.I think there were some things elsewhere that this program found and removed. Settings hide all over the place and sometimes add/remove doesn't get rid of everything.Sun did not used to remove the old when the new was installed but now they have started doing so, since I think update 13, because they realize it is a security hole to let the old on a computer.
