I have been using rec all the time without any problems. Have you tried changing mixer settings ? Also ogg files can be easily converted to mp3 format using ffmpeg.
Hallo Anil :) Thanks for your reply. I tried altering the mixer settings to no avail :( I believe that my problem is caused by the only input sources that are shown under the switches tab are mic, front mic, line and CD.When I use the line input with a loopback cable from line out the system works :) I reckon the reason why I got low level noise previously was that there was no effective input. Seems like this 'motherboard soundcard' has limitations :) Roger

Yup. Hidden in plain sight... works every time. :) There are "dedicated" programs for audio conversion as well: SoundConverter and SoundKonverter, for example.soundkonverter.png
Hallo Urmas :) I tried using SoundKonverter, but came up with an 'unknown format' error :) . Seems SoundKonverter couldn't find the realaudio codecs - just like mplayer. The annoying thing is that I know the codecs are installed. For example Kaffien will play the .ra file fine  , but Amarock and mplayer both come up with an 'unknown' format, or can't find the codec error.Roger
